why the hell does everyone shun "Kill Uncle"? Such an underrated album. I love this and King Leer, Mute Witness, End of the Family Line, Sing Your Life.
I rate Kill Uncle, I listen to it without ever being bored during one second. It"s well produced. I couldn't say the same about World Peace... The majority is not always right. Follow your tastes, not what the critics of NME say. They slagged KU and praised WPINOYB, this is education in reverse :)
You gotta give Morrissey tremendous credit for finding good songwriters who he could mesh with after separating from Johnny Marr and the rest of The Smiths. No one could ever compare to the jingle-jangle sound of Marr's guitar work and songwriting, but Morrissey's voice continued to live, just as no one can compare to Morrissey's own sense of quirky yet socially poignant lyricisim. It's blessings all the way around.
@Nathan Crowther I can generally agree with you there. Though there were enough saving graces on it to redeem it to an extent. I'd add "There's A Place in Hell For Me and My Friends" as the third admirable Morrissey song.
On the one hand one wonders what more Marr & Morrissey might have done, but then again you wouldn't have gotten songs like this or Everyday is Like Sunday, etc. Not sure why people can't move on.
@Nathan Crowther 😆 so critics are infallible and you base your views on what they tell you? Let's be honest, many critics are reviewing the person or politics, not the work
I like the soft sounds - the echo in the vocals and soft visuals - close-ups, crisp shirt, deep shadows. everyday transit scenes, skinheads with no clue Morrissey got all their hair 🙃
Morrissey is a genius....but I think his connection with The Smith's was just the best music I have ever heard not one song they made I dont like . I'm a 54yr old blackman from Detroit . All of my life they laughed at me when I played The Smith's. I was so happy when the movie came out ,I couldnt believe it. Long live The Smiths ....please do a reunion album..
I first heard OUR FRANK live at the Greek Theater in Berkeley. I was in the "mosh pit" when Morrissey sang the part , "Oh somebody - stop me, from thinking all the time ..." it was a transformative musical experience for me. Absolutely magical.
#Lyrics Our frank and open Deep conversations They get me nowhere They bring me down, so Give it a rest, won't you? Give me a cigarette God give me patience Just no more conversation Oh, give us a drink And make it quick Or else I'm gonna be sick Sick all over Your frankly vulgar Red pullover Now see how the colors blend Our frank and open Deep conversations They get me nowhere They just bring me down, so Give it a rest, won't you? Now will you just give over? The world may be ending But look, I'm only human So, give us a drink And make it quick Or else I'm gonna be sick All over Your frankly vulgar Red pullover Now see how the two colors blend, my friend Won't somebody help? Won't somebody stop me From thinking From thinking all the time About everything Oh, somebody From thinking all the time So deeply, so bleakly? So bleakly all the time About everything? (Who I am, how I ever got here) Somebody stop me From thinking From thinking all the time So bleakly, so bleakly So bleakly all the time
For songs that many people say are melancholic, I find in them something else. For example - I had not listened to Morrissey songs for a while, I'm down this morning given the events of the world, I put his song on and then I have this immediate lift in mood, even want to dance! I will put Sing Your Life on next, I'm expecting to shed a tear of joy.
Glad comments haven't been turned off but sad to see so many people, as they have for literally decades, spreading lies about Morrissey. Sigh. Not worth arguing about. He doesn't feel the need to engage with idiots who misinterpret/misunderstand his statements so I won't either. I'll just say I think this song is so good and that the skinheads aren't meant to be some Nazi statement. And I'm so freaking excited I'm finally seeing him in August. There are many, many people who love you, Morrissey. You're amazing. We know who you really are.
In my strange way, I’ll always be loyal to Moz. And in England skinhead was punk (Sex Pistols etc) and like Morrissey are anti-monarchists. Not racists. But music writers hated him , because he had been one and always speaks his mind. And had also published a James Dean bio before the Smiths. “Our Friends Hate It When We Become Successful”. Get it now?
I was a Skinhead for years, Skins were the ones who adopted West Indian music and borrowed some of their styles. Skinhead was the most fun time of my life.
Morrissey just gets better and better. At Brixton Our Frank was one of the highlights in a great set list, followed by an amazing encore. Rebel Without Applause is possibly the best post Smith's song I've heard.
I have “our frank “ tattooed on my thighs as a tribute to my best friend who passed. Miss our frank and vulgar deep conversations. Glad you got out . I’ll make the best of it here on earth as I can
