Peter Windsor chats to the brazenly-creative Gordon Murray, the South African who came to Europe to design and build racing cars - and dominated the world. Gordon was working in a small office at Brabham, under Ron Tauranac, when Bernie Ecclestone bought that team in 1971 - and Ron's advice at the time was to "sack Gordon". Bernie's natural instincts suggested otherwise. He gave the young engineer full control of the design office at Brabham - and two years later the team was winning Grands Prix. Gordon Murray, with multi-world championships behind him at Brabham and McLaren, plus hundreds of other scintillating road cars and road car designs, not the least of which was the McLaren F1, today runs his highly-successful Gordon Murray Design studio in Shalford, Surrey, England - adjacent to the site where John Barnard designed and produced the Ferrari F189-640 F1 car.

Thanks Peter! Just brilliant. Murray has always been one of my absolute favorite people from F1. Another favorite of mine is John Watson. They seem similar. Hint...hint? Wattie gives a great interview but you always know what questions to ask. I was hoping you'd include the t-shirt collection, so spot on!

It is one of the things that frustrates me that people say there isn't any good bands/music anymore, yes you have to search for it but you can find it.

@RARAYAYA RAA I think too that commercial radio is afraid of the internet so they rely on old stuff.. I'm in Tasmania and one of the most popular stations played a couple weeks ago achy breaky heart.. the chipmonk version...

Peter: you should do a feature on his new supercar! ;-)

Not to be too much of a Yank about it (though guilty) but, to your knowledge, has Gordon ever given credit to Jim Hall for having the idea of using a fan for downforce 8 years before the BT46B?

Sorry to ruin the decades old: 'Gordon's a genius' sentiment, but the cat's now out the bag. According to recent feedback from many of his relevant McLaren colleagues, Gordon had very little to do with the MP4/4, his previous car the Brabham BT55 was a shambles and I'm not sure what his consultancy has delivered other than give him a place to conduct an infinite amount of 'aren't I a genius' car mag interviews.

Indeed, I just saw the very interesting interview with Steve Nichols (the actual designer of the MP4/4 here on you tube, jayemm on cars).

Yep. Pleased to see the real designers of the 4/4 are now getting at least some credit. Gordon loved self-promotion for sure.
