    I am a huge Love & Logic fan. Been using this method in my teaching for over 10 years. I had one rough year, my first year teaching, and that was because the kids & my administration weren't expecting that approach. 9 years later, incoming students & parents know my teaching methods. I am the Zen Master. Apologize to the OG Phil Jackson.

    That's really cool! It's "just" a change of mindset. You've got to practice this system in order to make it a reflex, a new way of communicating. There are things that I already do - after 16 years teaching, that's a relief! But I'll try some of your wisdom for the year to come. :)

    I really want to become a better teacher. I was so impatient with my third graders this year. I yelled and argued and handed out punitive consequences like candy. The last few days of school, I had a full class every day. Other teachers had 0-4 students and mine kept showing up. They were smiling and showing love to the end. They were also keeping me from getting anything done, making a mess and arguing, like they'd been doing all year. I wish I hadn't been so impatient with them and want to do better next year.

    Interesting thoughts. Start with TRUTH...not empathy. You are the teacher, they are the students. Therefore, teach them according to TRUTH using Love (properly defining what you mean by 'LOVE'), morals, reason and logic as tools. The remainder of your input / thoughts are verified correct resulting in the students growth within the environment they are being taught - regardless of the parents upbringing. Keep the "world system" out of the training / teaching otherwise it will be for nothing. When they recognize the sincerity and hope through you then they will reciprocate in kind with understanding instilled within them. Thank you for the post!

    Aaron
    How does love and logic come into play if you have a safety issue? ie. How does it help if you have a student that is hitting or kicking others students? I ask because I experienced this situation as a sub in kindergarten one time and had no idea what to do. I ended up having to call the office and they removed him from class for the day.

    • @AaronsHobbiesPresents
      @AaronsHobbiesPresents  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Dan Gasior with huge behavior issues you really have to dive deep into the relationship building. Being a sub is hard because you do not have time to build relationships. I would say with kids who get violent, you have to look at what need they are trying to fill. For example, they may be trying to save face, defend themselves, gain control, lash out, etc. if you can find the need being filled you can address the issues before they explode. With the kids in my class, if I have an agree child I try and mirror their feelings with my voice (you look like this, and that tells me you are really upset, would you like some time away from the friends so you can calm down?).
      I hope this is helpful. I plan on doing a behavior video about aggressive kiddos.

    I know the final quarter of the school year is crazy, but I was wondering if you know when you will be adding a behavior video about aggressive kiddos. I am currently gathering data to share with our school staff. I would love to have a school climate focused on Love and Logic. I need to have as many answers to their questions as I can before I present this. I have already read, "Teaching with Love and Logic" and have listened to the hours of audio provided on the cds that came with the Love and Logic package. With 'delayed consequences,' when we enforce these consequences how do we give the kids the ownership of these? Or do we just tell them what the logical consequence is and enforce it?

    Hi there! I'm a senior currently in my early field placement studying art education. I'm researching L&L (!) Do you think L&L could be just as effective/utilized in an art setting? Do you think there would be a different approach? Just wondering!

    For the part of “what are you going to do” to the child, what if they get defensive and respond with “YOU NEVER DO HELP OR DO ANYTHING. Tell them something.” I
    Always would get that in my teaching years and I would get annoyed with the child and would tell them to go sit down. I don’t teach lower grades anymore since I moved into university teaching, but what would you have done in that predicament. That one kid who questions every motive. Btw... I wish I would have found your videos when I worked with school aged children :) would have helped me a lot!

    • @AaronsHobbiesPresents
      @AaronsHobbiesPresents  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A way to respond to that depends on their motivation. My response would be something like “It sounds like you are really frustrated and would like some ideas to help with this problem. Would you like me to help you come up with some ideas to solve it?” But if they are doing it for control or to fight with me and they say that a lot, then it might sound like “nice try” or “nice try, I know you are smart enough to solve this. If you need help, feel free to come back after you have tried to solve it”
      I hope that helps! Thank you for the kind feedback!

    How would you handle a student who calls kids mother F under his breath, sticks his tongue out and teases them? Admin is not very responsive on this one. This is first grade.

    • @AaronsHobbiesPresents
      @AaronsHobbiesPresents  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It really depends on the kid. I might do a “bummer it looks like you are telling your friend you need to be by yourself” and move the child. I might work with the two kids on how to express anger and how to tell the kid you don’t like that. If it’s a problem that happens a lot, the kiddo might loose his trust from the class and have to sit by himself, line up by himself etc, until he earns the trust back.

    Love and Logic has many dubious practices. It advises parents to repeat, relentlessly, “one-liners” that are demeaning and doubtlessly disturbing to children, e.g. “It must be a bummer having a parent who doesn’t care.” This practice encourages parents to resist reasoning with children, but rather put off their children with snide remarks, like "Nice try." Jim Fay further recommends starting one-liners in infancy.
    Parents are further advised to “go brain dead” when their child wants to discuss or argue with the parent. Love and Logic practices may lead children, especially young children, to believe they have been abandoned by their parents.
    Love and Logic advises parents to send young children to school without clothes or lunch under certain circumstances, a practice that may invite Social Services to investigate the parents.
    The Love and Logic website has claimed that their parenting methods have been researched, but that "research" amounts to nothing more than an in-house compilation of questionnaire answers parents gave at the end of a Love and Logic class. To my knowledge, there have been no published studies on the effectiveness and appropriateness of Love and Logic methods.
    In short, L&L does not appear to be helpful to parents in understanding normal child development or their responsibilities to their children, but rather promotes a distant, inflexible and uninvolved style of parenting. These methods are unlikely to teach a child empathy, responsibility, and involvement.

      Linda Rosa have you gone through a love and Logic training? I have done the training many times and no not agree with your comments, I am sorry you feel that love and Logic is dubious. I have used it in my classroom for 9 years and had had wonderful relationships with my students. The main point of love and logic is the build a relationship first. The examples you gave would be bad if there was not LOVE before the logic. Building a relationship and then allow students/children learn from their choices is an amazing way to teach and parent. You are not an absent parent, you remove yourself from the problem and help guide kids to problem solve and learn from their mistakes. The love and empathy are emphasized all the time in the trainings.
