  • The Elephone S8 is one of the coolest sub-$300 smartphones I've ever looked at. It features a super slim bezel and impressive 1440p display. Elephone also managed to pack in a fingerprint sensor and 21-megapixel camera into the package. The Elephone S8 is a very impressive Android smartphone for the price.

What doesn't get me is that people spend $1000 on a phone and then complain how phones are expensive these days. If your bothered to look online, you'll be able to find phones that don't have a well known brand like the Elephone in this video that has pretty well specs by today standed for 3 times less then a new known phone.

Because phones like elephone don't have good track record in software updates. That being said, most mainstream OEMs do sell their phone that are priced to high. It's just that bringing phones from brands like this is not a good enough argument.

    • @TechnoBabble
      @TechnoBabble 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

Because on paper specs and build materials don't mean a high build quality and a good experience. Despite the resolution of the rear camera it's clearly worse than my Galaxy S7's. I used to have a phone like this from Xiaomi, and despite also being made of glass and aluminum it felt like a cheap toy compared to the S7 I'm using now. This phone also has basically no features, it's just a phone, and that's great if you don't use any of the features that flagship phones have, but not everyone is like that. It's got a basic camera, basic finger print scanner, the display is nowhere near the brightness and contrast of a flagship device, it's not going to get security updates and the like for as long as a flagship device that costs twice as much. There's a lot more to the cost of a device than just the on paper specs.

Had this phone for a year and it has lots of common problems that Elaphone have not addressed.
The GPS is drunk! It takes ages to find a signal and spins around like it's tripping when it does. Dangerous at times when you're driving.
The lip sync aps like IMDb is way way off and videos you've made yourself freeze and jutter all the time.
    Battery life is poor.
It's just not usable and like I said Elaphone seem to be doing NOTHING to fix the issues.
Bye bye s8. Hate this phone and I wouldn't recommend to anyone.

I had my fair share if elephones myself, and i didn't have a problem at all. And i think it's understandable, that they didn't really care about the s8 too much, because compared to their new phones they started to produce not too long ago, the s8 was just a try. I have a new PX, for my personal phone, and a Huawei mate 20 lite for work, and i have to say, that even my brothers Samsung galaxy s9+ can't really offer too much. The s8 is considered an "old" phone for elephone. The PX kills.

Seems they are getting better when it comes to features. I got a P7000 from elephone over a year ago and barely got it to last 6 months before I had screen issues, stability problems, and eventually a bad battery. Had a nice camera and was super snappy. I wonder if the quality has improved here.

Something I was trying to find online was if/how well it works in the USA with no definitive results. The one I got (won't advertise the seller) works on AT&T in North Texas. It does not work with LTE but it's '4g' speeds are around 8-9Mbps. Hope this helps some - I took the chance and got it and so far love it.

Duncan Bass Boost Btw I brought this phone and it scores 4900 multicore on geekbench 4, battery life is excellant, its fast, the screen is beautiful and the home button works very well when you get used to it, its much better in every way to my lg g4 except for the camera (it takes longer to focus and although the pictures are high quality the colours are off, could be fixed with a software update im sure), which is decent but the most noticable difference to current flagships, as well as hard gaming, it handles almost every game perfectly but you may notice a difference of the heaviest of games, and the speaker really isn't that bad. All in its very impressive for the price, if it had a samsung badge it would sell for twice the price and people would be very happy with it.

A 2k screen that seems to be overstock from an older device, as it has nowhere near the brightness and contrast of a flagship device. The camera's resolution means nothing if the actual sensor and image processing are sub-par, which they are on this device. And the size of a device's display means absolutely nothing about the quality, so I don't even know why you mentioned that.

They do business and they need money to develop or at least maintain it. If they sell cheap phone, that mean it's also "cheap".

Purchased one and sold it on Ebay 3 weeks later. the display is mind blowing. It gets LTE in the US but not enough bands. It tends to revert back to 3g when traveling. The media tech processor also gets warm when pushing it. A snapdragon processor would have been better.

I bought this phone cause it looked amazing for the price... not sure if I just got a shite model, but the battery sucks. It's either defective or just really bad cause it often dies on me at 20%, sometimes at 40%... The back cam is advertised at 21MP but it only gives you the option of 16MP... They boast 4GB of RAM, yet my phone sometimes gets stuck with a few apps open (Facebook, Insta, Messenger) and the signal is pretty bad in some parts of my city. Lucky for me, it works fine in the area I'm in.
I've tried reaching out to elephone's support team for a refund or maybe some answers for what to do if my device is defective, but they haven't replied to me on any of the contact links they have.
Phone's still pretty big and the display is awesome. When this phone works as intended, it's awesome and I love it. Plays games super well and the camera is great.
There's some performance bugs that could be fixed through system updates, but I don't think Elephone ever put out any updates for phones a few months after release, so keep that in mind.
Tbh I wouldn't buy this phone again.

Have this phone for One month so far and It works great.. Have to charge it once two days on moderate use.. The only three down sides it has :
No direct phone jack (adapters are annoying and ruining your Usb C connector long term)
NO fast charger included in the Box
Not the best GPU to drive a 2k display
There's a easy way to downgrade to 1080p and get your full FPS back in the most demanding games but other than that.... I clearly prefer looking at a 1440p display in most scenarios. Watching netflix 4k (even in 2k) definitley worths having to look for a 2k screen on any phone that has 5.5''+ display.
It's fast, battery life is great, idle battery consumption is surprising, good software integration (Night mode or floating windows of any app), very good screen quality.
For any MTK Haters id ask... What can you do more with a top of the line Snapdragon? You keep it for a longer time?(BS) Get a good PC or latest gen console to play your games and leave people that only want great specs for the price having their own opinions on what they should buy. (After all the smartphones are still getting faster and faster and I still see people playing the same two games for years)

    • @tabascocrimson7865
      @tabascocrimson7865 6 ปีที่แล้ว

cristian gonzalez More than allright... The only thing I could warn anybody of is the video recording that isn't very good.. the fps varies a bit.. Still I couldnt care less about videos recording on a smart phone... Battery life is more than decent. I dont charge it everyday. Gpu performance is decent (even in 1440p) but cannot play asphalt 8 maxed out with smooth fps... have to dial back the settings or downgrade to 1080p.
Screen quality is very good too.
For that price (300can) i guess it was and is still the best way to go

I'm just so in love with my Elephone. 😘😚
When I was trying to find a new phone, I did a lot of research before even choosing.
Then I came across this guy showing off the phone.
As the S8's were being upgraded, I got my phone from the Elephone company for $199 USD. Although I live in Australia.
The delivery was fast and I'm super impressed by the phone. And it's even better at the price.
A big screen, almost to the edges. The colours and sound are fantastic. The battery lasts for quite a while, even longer now my battery saver turns it off during the night. So a full charge will last 2.5 days.
The weight makes it feel more expensive than it is and the camera takes beautiful pictures.
So thank you Unbox Therapy. You did me right. 😀

I'd prefer beefed up framing to support the screen and digitizer. There needs to be a phone marketed towards those looking for durability. I've had a Galaxy S6 crack from just being in a front pocket. I don't give a shit what the phone likes, I'd just be happy if they were as durable as the old school iPhones.

Pokémon geht deshalb genau so bescheiden.

I was using a Motorola Moto E (2nd Gen) 4G and wanted to replace it with something with a bigger screen, and can't justify the prices of the likes of Apple or Samsung phones. I did quite a bit of research and finally decided on the Elephone S8, and ordered it through Aliexpress. That was in February, and for about four months, the phone worked as it should. Then it suddenly stopped picking up a 4G signal (my closest tower is less than half a mile away), but would not switch to 3G or even 2G. I even tried setting these as defaults and I couldn't make or receive calls. I initially put it down to the local tower as it was showing as being worked on around the same time. The only issue was that there are 30+ towers within a 5 mile radius of me (all for my provider), and it could not pick up any of them. What it would do however, if I left it alone, was that after about 30-40 seconds it would pick up a cell tower in Co. Donegal, Ireland, whereas I live in Northern Ireland, less than 10 miles from the border, but the reception was crap. I have tried multiple hard resets, have used three different providers, and have the same issues. The seller suggested taking it to a repair shop and they would offer me a partial refund, but neither of the two repair shops would even look at it. I contacted the seller multiple times, both in English and in Chinese, and they just palmed me off. I went through the Aliexpress Buyer Protection process, giving them all the details, and after the initial contact, they have gone silent. I've posted on the manufacturers forum as well, with no outcome, and there hasn't been any firmware updates since I got it in February. Don't buy it!

    BEFORE YOU BUY!!!!! READ THIS!!!!
I bought this phone because everyone was talking great.. WAIT!!! Some didn't really talk about the signal/reception.. I live in CALIFORNIA, I have TMobile and the phone SUCKS!!!!! my calls don't go through, you can't hear the person right.. you gotta send the message 5 times so it can actually send because it keeps saying "message failed to send" the signal just just GARBAGE! I feel like throwing this phone against the wall sometimes. Everything else is great. But I can't believe a $30 backup phone that I use has way better signal than this "Smart Phone". Anything from calls to text to internet sucks really bad. But the device itself is good. So I use it more as a tablet than as a phone sadly :/

I have the same problem. I think the built in antenna is garbage. I have to go outside my apt. to be able to send text messages and I have trouble hearing the person's voice when getting calls. Now I'm questioning if they were being honest or they didn't entirely tried the phone or if they just got paid to say that.

About $100 more but at least I could use it inside my house and get a signal. Good Luck!

Protip: they don't have terrible customer support. You are not their customer. The company that sold you their phone is their customer.
That's how these phones are so cheap. An individual or company buys a crate load or a container and then they deal with the warranty and after sales care etc.
You need to buy it from a reputable official reseller to get adequate support.
Regarding OS updates you can thank media tech for being shitty with sources for that.
Google have actually made a deal with media Tek to try and alleviate this issue though.

I bought this phone after my HTC one M8 started dying based on this video. I love this phone it's the biggest phone I've ever had but it's quick has great storage and the screen is great for movies. The Speakers aren't great but it works well with my blue tooth head phones. The phone came with screen protector pre-installed so no bubbles! and the case keeps it from being slippy in your hand. Over all I would buy another one of these to replace the old one or simply stay in the Elephone brand. Thanks for the advice!

Wish it had 18:9 wide aspect display for my next device as I was going to upgrade from my current battle scarred device of 3 years. Pre-Ordered it , but cancelled 2 days later as I want to be caught in this latest fad. A shame really, but i guess the x25 chipset does not support that ratio.p25 is a underspecced for me so will be waiting till 2018 to see what new offerings unleashed.

I'm not an average idiot, (above-average idiot LOL) but if you're sure I'd really be grateful for some help! - ST Support has - in my experience - been worse than useless, in the case of my current (bought from ST) phone, blaming me for VM indicator not working & pretending they have never heard of the problem when a simple G-search shows EVERYONE WITH THE PHONE HAS THE SAME d@mn PROBLEM!
SERIOUSLY, HELP (kindness of a stranger) WOULD BE APPRECIATED (& paid forward!)

nalasandemi I've got an Elephone S7 before that I almost throw in the garbage can because the DATA does not work. Then i realize that maybe the APN was not automatically configured. Because on other everytime i put the SIM for the first time i will receive configurations that i need to install.
So back to where ur problem is, what i did is manually configure the Access point,
First, use a phone that ur SIM works on DATA then go to the settings Network and Mobile network (i dont knw what will ur names it) but just go there where you can find your Mobile "Access Point Names" or if your phone has a search built in their setting just search for the Access Point names,
After that go click the ur network provider or ur GPRS and MMS there will appear an edit access point, you dont need to edit this just write all that stuffs or just screenshots all the configurations there.
Now, this will get tricky because some of the things or maybe only couple of things are different when it comes to ur Elephone S8,
Ok now put the SIM into your ELEphone S8 and go again to the Network and Mobile Network or Internet something in ur S8
Go to the Access Point Names this is where you will manually edit your Access Point Name or APN and put all the information all in all as in copy paste from the ones you write or screenshots from the configurations of your GPRS MMS, like i said some of it might named or titled different. It's a matter of trial and error but in my case i only tried it once so hopefully for you as well and save it.
Hopefully you'll get you DATA or LTE going

So I've been using the S8 for a few months now. The specs are great, the display is very good and big enough to replace my tablet throughout the day. On the downside the touch responsiveness is sometimes not the best in some screen areas, and what really is a game killer is that I am not able to receive Calls.... no joke. 95% of all callers get that I am out of reach. In addition to that I have to restart the phone every few hours because I lose my 4g connection. I hope this is a Software issue that gets fixed soon because I really like the phone, but not being able to receive calls is kinda throwing me back into the stone age. On the upside, it has been pleasantly quiet lately ;)

    • @Sebastian-lt4dh
      @Sebastian-lt4dh 5 ปีที่แล้ว

1 year in and I learned that calls don't get through when using 4G in Japan. Reason seems to be the limited support of frequencies. 4G works, but phone calls seem to want to use other frequencies? idk. Only solution is 3G usage only. Screen is great, battery good... but really thats it. GPS sucks, touch screen has ghosting, wired things happen if you don't reboot every 2nd day, camera is average. Worst thing is the support, as Elephone doesnt give a shit about your issues.

Wow! Sounds like a great phone.
Sadly I'll never buy it for myself tho.
On the other hand, here's who I would buy it for:
    - Any kids from 7-18
(then they can buy their own phone)
    - First phone for anyone regardless of age
    - Any adult that's a low frequency user, can't keep up with cell phones and/or is not tech savvy
