I used header wrap that I use on my Harley. You can touch the exhaust pipe and it is just warm. The best way to use the heat wrap is to soak it in water to keep the glass fibers from getting on you.
You need to have the pipe facing down to stop condensation in the exhaust which is acidic
Thanks for the advice, started doing that now
@@sherburnoutdoors Agree and as you had it in the video, the 'thin' edge of the exhaust you'll see has a hole in it which drains any moisture from the line, hence the continuous down slope from heater to outlet. The other 'thin' side has the mounting rivet hole. Great video and I've changed my brand on 'low noise' pump I was planning to order to the one in your video.
I ordered instantly this quiet pump thanks
Worth buying the up graded fuel pump as we fit all our ambulances with Diesel Heaters 5 KW Oh in passing the up graded pump will last a lot longer.
Great info on the fuel pump, thank you.
One thing you should be aware of when using an infrared thermometer is that they work by detecting infrared emissions. Not all surfaces are equal in this regard. Shiny surfaces are notorious for lack of emissivity. Flat black and strangely enough water work very well. Do a quick Google on infrared emissivity tables to shed some insight into their accuracy on various surfaces.
Could you wrap the fuel pump in Rockwool? it does a great job in my living room walls for noise reduction. And a combustion rating of over 2000 degrees.
We have an Eberspacher diesel heater mounted underneath our VW T5 camper van and in the handbook it describes the pump as “near silent” I can honestly say that I’ve never heard the pump either inside or outside the van, just shows that these pumps can be very quiet 👍🏻🇬🇧
It's cos you have rightly spent the money on the genuine item rather a knock off. Good on yer.
We have eberspacher heater's in lorry's and they are brilliant,I had a Chinese diesel heater in my camper van, lasted three weeks 😢
@@steveffuksake Eberspacher was recommended to me by a former HGV fitter and parts supplier, he said they were very reliable and parts were readily available it also helped that we have a main agent fairly local to us who did the installation. It was not cheap (£1500 fitted) but I’ve not regretted it.
Thank you for the video, nice explanations and tips !!!
Glad it was helpful!
You could probably also blimp the intake with some kind of wadded mesh in a mesh bag. It'd have to be loose and not get in there, so it could get a little big, but it would probably quiet it a good deal.
ran the exhaust through a radiator and get more heat, also brother when doing exhaust wraps wet the soak the cloth and then wrap you get a tight wrap that will not come undone. great video thanks for showing that an after market pump can take away the tick tick tick.
Thanks for the information. I have one of those heaters just like that one love everything But that clicking fuel pump.
I screwed foot extenders to mine to get rid of burning issue; also helps keeping exhaust pointed down. Wraps only help marginally.
If running outside; the old trick is to drill a 1/8 or smaller hole on bottom of pipe by outlet if you need to point up; lets water drip out and increases flow.
great video
I noticed you can buy replacement pumps for 1 - 5 kW pumps. Is the 8 kW quiet and does need replacing.
I got that pump and have the same heater as y'all. I also purchased the silicon boot thats encloses dose pump. I suspended pump with nylon ties to eliminated the transfer of any noise to heater cabinet. I dont hear pump after 2 minutes of operation. This is 2nd season with it, already used it to heat 2 car garage this year, still silent! Happy Trails!
Michael what part of the country are you in? I'm thinking about using a diesel heater to heat my 2 car garage but I wonder if it can keep up in a Minnesota winter.
Can you share more info and possibly a link to the boot you’re talking about?
@@j.saavedra1502 It'll heat your double garage as long as insulated well except concrete floor will still be cold unless you insulate it too
Thank you very much!!!👏🙌👍
Mine is almost identical, and it was resonate on thru the wood floor of my camper, just adding rubber dampening to the feet eliminated the noise
The thing I found that works the best and extremely inexpensive is a pool noodle, wrap the pump with it
Great idea. I used the foam copper pipe plumbing foam tube
@@MikeR55 I was thinking motorcycle silencer packing. Amazon has some for $10.
@@jimm1819 Ya that will work. I have some left over from an FMF muffler repack kit.
Good job... 👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks
Heat tape wrapped around an exhaust can lead to cracking because of too much heat retained in the pipe and then the cooling after shutdown. How has this fared with this?
I'll check out the quiet pump, thank you. Would have appreciated a temp check after the black tape. In my case the tape just conducted the heat right through, maybe a drop of about 10 degrees was all I got. Used about 1.5 inches thick white fiberglass heat wrap and down to 73 degrees. (touchable)
In the showdown video I did last week, there are temp readings taken
Hey I have the 5kw all in one vevor diesel heater and I changed the fuel pump but the one you recommended is still very loud… is it possible I installed it incorrectly?
i love that ticking sound i don't even hear it much now
How could you...he didn't shut up the entire video.
@@keithdevendorf63 I have a diesel heater
I followed the link for fuel pump and there’s two options. Which one did you use?
I’ve got the silent pump in my RV, after a few hours use it seemed to go even quieter.. Roland 🇬🇧 uk
The exhaust should be pointing downwards because condensation forms in the exhaust tube and soon it will start bubbling like a bong
I have sound deadning laying around and I plan on adding a layer to the pump itself and around the cover to test it out.
Let me know how it goes
Fired heater last night, loud tick from pump but didn't realize what it was at the time. Removed cover today, fuel line taping in cover, also noisy pump. Left over batting insulation beside heater from previous owner, stuff some around pump and fuel line. Zero tapping once heater is running.
Will likely re route pump and insulate with board foam but atleast we know insulation helps a ton.
Ran heater for 20 mins during day to see if any parts near pump get warm or hot, everything was cool to the touch so in theory it will work but not the safest. Ok for a quick hack until you can relocate.
i love that clicking noise, makes me know that heater is working :) and wrapping exhaust aint a good idea...unless you change it with proper one, those chinese pipes are so cheap that will simply burn down and closing heat inside will just speed it up....
me to ..i find it relaxing and comforting
The Chinese are smart there aftermarket replacement parts are the real profits
I wrapped mine in a little putty tape. And I was surprised how quiet it was after that.
The noisy pump that comes with these?
very hard to find this pump again on sale. did you have another link? Thanks
sorry, this is the one I used on Amazon
Fun fact: The exhaust "muffler" is not a silencer. It's a condenser and it do not damp the sound. It's possible to get a real silencer as a little muffler or as a muffler hose.
Other than the condenser function, is it even needed? I ran mine without the 'muffler', seemed to work ok without it.
@@MikeR55
I think you need some way to get rid of the moisture that comes when the fuel burns. So it must depend on how the exhaust system is made and is it possible for the moisture to run out of the exhaust pipe. I have seen a solution where the exhaust pipe had a small drain plug since the condenser was not used. I think i will use it but i have also 2 meter long exhaust silencer and also a real silencer. I'm still in the project thaughts and have not installed my Diesel heater yet.
Ha ha you learned the hard way about itchy hands and fibreglass exhaust tape, always wear gloves before applying exhaust tape.
May I suggest that you lower the exhaust silencer as it has a condensation drain hole in the bottom of it , your exhaust will last a lot longer. Im running two over the winter here in the uk one in a static caravan and on on the side of the house, its saving a lot of money burning kerosene instead of diesel in them.
Thanks for the tips! Only wearing gloves moving forward and I did position it down
In 2 separate installs, one a Chinese and the other a Webasto, both pumps were quieter at the higher setting. It is a faster "click", Not as loud and not as noticeable.
I think the noise of the fans helps mask the clicking noise as well when they are ramped up hogher
The ticking is often not the pump but the fuel line tapping against the housing. What pump dit you get 16ml..20...24? Or you you just bought 'a' fuel pump?
Thanks for video im wondering how long can i leave diesel inside the tank for when its not use for summer time
I actually like the ticking noise
Make a box out of foam boardand just sit it over top of the heater with the intake and exhaust outside the box. I do it with all my generators and it eliminates 99% of noise. Slide that thing under your vehicle with that insulated box over top of it and you wount hearba single sound other than the blower fan.
absolutely brilliant video, thank you for taking the time to make it for us all.
Glad you enjoyed it
Does this new fuel pump compatible with all Chinese diesel heater on the market, and what is the difference between the advanced and general model? Thanks
Pretty much, I think all of the units are pretty much the same and probably made in the same factory
What portable power station are you using to power the diesel heater?
It is a 500wh Wattfun I bought on Amazon a couple of years ago
Maybe a crazy question but what was the temperature of the exhaust pipe after wrapping it I'm curious to see how much it helped
I will be honest. I do not think it cooled anything.
@@sherburnoutdoors thanks
Great video & thanks for sharing. How loud is the pump not that you have been using for a while. One of the review comments said it started quite and then got louder a few weeks later.
seems to work great, couldn't hear a thing from the pump. All i need now is a "youtber" ...
i built a waterproof wooden box, with lift up lid... That sits around the back of my workshop...
I cut and extended the wiring to the control screen, so that the screen is on the wall inside my workshop, and the heater is outside...
Powered by a car battery, constantly on trickle charge...
and just drilled a hole in my workshop wall to put air vent in...
So i hear no ticking :) Not an issue for me
I’ve done the same and hear the ticking through the get air vent….
That is great, thanks for sharing!
Hi - great video, want to install a Deisal heater but have the same concern of the pump noise. A couple Questions, is the unit you modded a Vevor? And what power station are you using, I have heard the Vevors need 15 amps from the 12 V to start reliably (Most Power stations I've seen like Jackery et al are 10) Thanks!
It is a vevor and the power stations I use only to 10a on the 12 v. never had a problem
@@sherburnoutdoorsThanks! Good Channel, subbed :)
I have my pump suspended by a couple of elastic bungee chords. This is on a boat and is still mounted so will not swing about. The chords stop the pulse communicating itself to the infrastructure. Can hardly hear the tick at all. Would be silent if I wrapped the pump with insulation but so quiet I've not got round to it.
Very cool, thanks for sharing
The pump is noisiest when the heater is running on low.
Still a 1000 times better than the one that come with it from the factory
@@sherburnoutdoors ..Just went to your link that you provided and it says "no longer available".
@@steiny3353 I just clicked it, works fine
@@sherburnoutdoors ...hmmmm. I'll try again....thanks
@@sherburnoutdoors ...The link works fine, but they (the pumps) are no longer available and they don't know when they will be available.
Would wrapping the exhaust in heat tape prevent the natural heat radiation from the exhaust, in turn making the housing hotter?
Even if true, I've heard that some people like to run their housings hotter, as they say it lowers coking (suit) in the chamber.
I am not sure, I know with the wrap I put on it was still very hot
Quick question: how do you actually seperate the fuel tank from the case? It seems to be bolted or welded. Thx in advance
No, i did not remove it
@@sherburnoutdoors thanks, but I discovered how to remove it. I have a leak and needed to inspect the tank to understand leak source
the original pump keeps the unit price down but yes better ones are out there
The exhaust needs to be at a downward angle to allow any condensation to run out.
That exhaust get close to 300 degrees, I am guessing what ever is in there will turn to vapor
@@sherburnoutdoors start up and run down and as it cools it will create acidic condensation…..
Yup, you are right, if people would look on the muffler there is a weep hole on the bottom for this purpose, but who pays attention to details. I've seen some installations where they put the heater in a plastic box and have the burner air intake inside of the box. Sure it will work, but any combustion loves cold dense air to burn efficiently.@@andymccall6861
I think the muffler actually has a small weep hole to drain the condensation
Banging noise! ROFL NO it is a ticking noise. Glad you got it sorted out for your rabbit ears. ha ha
are you running it off a 12v 10amp socket? just got a power station and im using an inverter as my 8kw draws about 150W on start up and theoretically shouldn't work
Yep, 10a
and doesnt draw over 120w?@@sherburnoutdoors
On startup at the beginning gets around 125 to 127
right - that exceeds 12v at 10a...you'd think it'd blow a fuse. interesting. Not sure I will risk it.@@sherburnoutdoors
@@RyanGold19 have had probably 10 trips at 20 degrees with the heater and power station, never had an issue
Did you see a part number on the replacement pump? I bet it might be cheaper sold under a different name
Not sure that the pump is actually any quieter. I hear the pump when the heater is on low. When it's on full, the noise of the pump is drowned out by the exhaust noise. What do you think? I am going to put some foam insulation around the pump and see what difference that makes. Either way, I would rather be warm.
👍👍👍👍👍👍
Get no sleep? You’re not tired enough. Build a box, line it with kill mat and love happily ever after. 😂
I am a light sleeper, not an issue anymore with the quieter pimp
Hope you don't run the thing for long out in the cold with the exhaust up. Like that.

Agree, he totally rushed that part of the video... maybe he gets a really nice kickback when ppl buy the "slightly quieter" $50 PUMP ? lol
Just shows don't buy the cheapest heater, pay more get better quality
Pump is noisy. You can hear it ticking away when he was outside next to his green shelter.
Camera picks up the ticking better than your ear.
Camera doesn't pick it up after different pump. I say this is pretty good.
Exactly, dude doesn’t shut the hell up to let anyone here anything!!! Totally Clickbait BS
Just increase the viscosity of the fuel,, with a drop of oil,,, simple no more clicking,,,

Silent Pump for Diesel Heaters - test / review by David McLuckie
Never mind the shit diesel heater look at the cool jeep
It is cool Jeep, thank you for watching
Pumps are noisy at low hertz and most quiet at his setting h6
They are but this replacement pump I put on is quieter
Bad reviews on these upgraded pumps ppl saying they don’t last long
22 nights so far in 20 degree weather and no issues SO FAR.
Exhaust heat tape will shorten the life of the exhaust pipe by 70%. Insulating the fuel pump will shorten its life by 50%.
Really so its that quiet? Some Amazon reviews saying its Louder then stock pump & one said the seal blew off the pump & sprayed Diesel every where. Been wanting quit pumps, But they all have such mixed reviews regardless of the brands.
It was way quieter
Just add some used filtered cooking oil (up to 70%) and the higher viscosity will make the clicking almost silent. Best way to prepare the cooking oil is using some pork gelatine desolved in boiling water, add it to the used oil and mix it. Let it cool down, and most of the gunk will settle at the bottom. Use the clear oil on the top and filter it.
Used cooking a big NO from us and only ise home heating fuel or a decent road diesel as we have been using those heaters for years.
Yeah that's the best thing you can do if you're trying to ruin your heater
@@troy7124 It is for sure not recommended, but I have run it like this for 1 and 1/2 season, with no big issues. For me, it has been a great succes, considering the heater was only 120 euro. Diesel prices here (Europe) are insane, so this is a cheap alternative. I am sure I will need to clean it more often and it will need more regular service intervals, but that is a risk I am willing to take.

Where’s the link for the diesel pump.?.
In the description
The ticking isn't even really the pump it's the water hammer effect moving through the line etc. I've been able to get my factory one almost this quiet just by placement of the pump and lines.
Never. NEVER EVER run the exhaust uphill. NEVER.
$50 Dollar one ? That's the 2/3rds price of the Heater.
I just bought one with water separator for $15
my heater was only £100 so £50 is a lot
The new one he's using is not better
As the one who is actually using it, it is quieter, significantly quieter
Unless you intend to kill the heater, the exhaust should gently slope downwards, the muffler as a small hole in the bottom to allow condensation out.
The exhaust tube will crack if you keep bending it in different directions.

I ordered one of these pumps after watching your video and it should arrive in a couple of weeks. Seems they are shipping directly from China now or something. In any case, one of the Amazon reviewers noted that while it was initially silent it then sounded pretty much like the original one after a couple of weeks. Have you noticed any change in the pump's noise level? I still have time to cancel, is basically why I'm asking.
I actually have one of James Browning-Smith's replacement pumps which is truly silent (and tunable), but it's mounted in my briefcase heater and I'm hesitant to take it out.
How did your new pump work out?

@@byrne1916some people have said if you put it in a foam camera/gun case its quieter. IMO when the sound of the fan is factored in its not that bad.
@@robertberin4872 I bought this pump off AliExpress and it's about 25% quieter than the rubbish that came with it. True the fan is louder than it, I just have mine wrapped in a towel now and don't notice it. There's a more expensive version of this pump online with a water filter under it, I'd avoid it as it's not worth paying double the price. I got 2 more replacements on the way, but shipping is +2 months.
why do you need a battery?
For the electronics and the fan
you should never run the exhaust at an upward angle, condensation builds in the line and it can restrict flow and kill. it's happened before.
