      And PSU shrouds help too, if you have a small PSU 400-650w then you can use that extra space. My PSU shroud also has drive cage for 2 drives and I only have one, so more cables can go underneath the empty cage

      @@Zach-rw6jf make your own cables, it's a lot easier than it seems. You could also just sleeve the cables that are already in your PSU if you're happy with the length. Extensions are only a nightmare if the excess cable was already terribly long.

      Use Velcro ties instead.
      Behind every desk at where I work (they all face a wall, and some walls were brick, so they couldn't be wired cost-effectively), Ethernet, power, and backup power cables are secured in Velcro ties. They've never been hard to deal with when moving computers around or doing cleaning or maintenance, or even a couple of rewirings when one of the data cables went bad.
      Inside your case, they should be fairly easy to deal with. The best reasons I support cable management are noise reduction, and later modifications.
      For later modifications, knowing which cable goes where makes repairs or upgrades less of a hassle. Multiple-plug wires (like drive connectors) hit fewer snags when being rerouted or removed.
      For noise reduction, I recently had to tie back the extra 2 pins on my PCI power connector on my brand new rig's graphics card. The 2-pin connector was lightly touching one of the heat pipes on the GPU cooler. With the GPU fans running, the noise from that vibration was definitely audible. I was concerned my system had a defective part, or that I had broken it on the ride home from where I built it.

    One thing to watch out for if you are routing behind the motherboard, or any time you're removing a motherboard, is to keep in mind that motherboard standoffs can sometimes unscrew instead of the actual motherboard screws. This happened to me recently.
    I was removing the mobo, and unscrewing the mobo screws and one of them felt a little bit weird but I just kept unscrewing. Then suddenly I heard a "crack" and realised that the standoff had been turning under the motherboard and it was bending the motherboard as it lifted up!
    Thankfully my mobo seems to be fine, but I think I was lucky.

    Proper cable management will also help keep your cables intact, especially if you take the side panels off and on frequently. If a cable is properly tucked away, there's less chance of either bending it in a way it shouldn't be bent, or closing the case onto a stray cable!
    Just went and bought a large bag of zip-ties, and will be doing some cable management myself (or at least double checking the cable management on my custom built system) as soon as I have access to my desktop again.

    It was interesting watching you do a live build. Then having to poke the cables such as the fan cable and rgb controller to the other side. It would be interesting if motherboard companies thought about cable management before building a motherboard. Like having the connectors for rgb and other things on the other side you of the cpu.
    I amazed that cablemods has not gone rgb or you could print like linus media group logo on to the cables. I wonder if you mixed dbrand and cablemods together.
    I also wonder how you could optimise a motherboard to get the cleanest connections.

    I don't bother with cable management unless the right side is exposed (like a tempered glass right side panel). It's a waste of time, nobody is going to see it except you, and it just makes it harder to change something or troubleshoot when you have to cut all those little cable ties or unravel velcro straps. Cable ties can also put a huge amount of stress on cables, potentially deforming them.

    • @vsm1456
      @vsm1456 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      just don't tie them too tight

    • @profosist
      @profosist 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Harder? With proper cable management it's easier. Cable are already where they should be. Motherboard swaps can happen in minutes since you're not chasing cables everywhere.

    • @nocelebrity6042
      @nocelebrity6042 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Loose cable ends in an open case (where you can't just tuck them into the power supply shroud) can touch fans and make noise from the fan's vibrations. Or, if they get pulled into the blades, you could wind up either getting a new fan, a new cable, or both. And if it was in your CPU cooler's fan, you might be replacing the CPU.

    • @sternkrieger1950
      @sternkrieger1950 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're correct, you should clean and tidy cables on the front where all the fans are, but there's very little reason to on the back unless it's going to be visible. Just forget to mention that bit. :/

    I spent a Saturday cable-managing my home theater cables. Wire loom, velcro straps, power strips screwed onto the back of the rack, etc. Everything looked great. 3 weeks later there was a problem with a Sat receiver. The Tech Support person told me to un-plug the receiver from the power strip. Something like 7 identical black plugs feeding a thick wire-loom of AC power cords and I had to guess which one.... Murphy's Law of Cable Management: Within days of doing cable-management, some part will fail requiring you to tear apart your careful wire job.

    Linus, what about the pin matching problem, where some PSUs are pinned differently and will blow your system if the cables aren't pinned correctly??? On another note, I just today, did my yearly case clean out and management. Took me 13 hours for cleaning each fan (I have 11 total), oiling the fan bearings, moving SSDs to my small drive bay in the shroud, and remanaging my cables from when I added new stuff over the year. It's absolutely insane the amount of time you'll dedicate to making your PC look it's best. Also, I did notice a slight drop in temps after remanaging my cables and hardware.

    I thought I was one of very few who actually run cables between the motherboard and tray. Extra Pro Tip: RGB LED strips near the edge of the motherboard between the motherboard and tray look sweet AF! Yes, that requires running them BEFORE securing the motherboard too. Just inside the standoffs usually give it enough space from the edge to get a nice glow without the separation of individual LEDs. No, my components do no get any warmer, nor is there enough heat from the LED strips to cause any issues either. I ran strips behind my Asus B350 and my current Asus X470 boards. Both boards have run an OCd R5 1600x, G.Skill memory @ 2800 MHz CL 15 and a dinosaur of a GPU, the EVGA GTX 780 TI Dual Classified. Which I'm happy AF to say that I'm finally upgrading to an Asus Strix 1070 TI. Bought today at an awesome price (I couldn't pass up $350 USD) and should be in my rig by Monday. I know the person I'm buying it from and I'm the IT that works on his rig. I just have to wait on him to get his 1080 TI. :-)
