Great review. At first I thought it was going to be another subjective fluff review like so many other TH-cam hifi reviewers are doing these days but boy was I wrong. Looking forward to more
Yeah, I don't do that here. If you want to see a brutally honest review about a so called "high end" speaker, then take a look at my Look Inside and review video for the Focal Aria 906. Yikes! PS: Even though the LA110 sub didn't live up to my expectations, their LA165 and LA365 speakers are quite good considering the price point that they sell at.
Good honest review! I’m happy with CerwinVegas recent comeback but I think being that CV! Is known for their bass, they likely should have put a little more into this sub to keep up to their reputation. Still overall I think the LA Series is well put together for the price 👍🏻 cool test with the external amp hopefully CV! Gets back to you
Thank you! All of the passive speakers I have reviewed from CV like the LA165 and LA365 are very impressive for their price point. Honestly, I'm still scratching my head on how they can even build the LA365 for $349 because its that good. Sadly the LA110 doesn't have quite the same value proposition as the LA165 and LA365 that I have reviewed, but it has potential if given a decent amplifier. Hopefully the amp in my was faulty? I'll let you guys know if they respond.
IMO there is nothing "average" about the LA165 or LA365 speakers. :) Cerwin-Vega hit a home run with them and IMO they perform well above their price point in both construction quality and sound quality. I would assume the LA44 doesn't fall far from the tree either. As for the powered sub, it doesn't have quite the same value proposition as the other models in the line up. However, if Cerwin-Vega can work out the problems with the amp, then they would have a nice competitor in this space.
I expected better results from a class A/B amplifier - a bit disappointing. That being said, RSL has a new sub - the " 10E " / at $299.00, it has a 10" driver, 300 watts RMS / 800 watts peak. Might you consider checking this new " Budget Killer " out?
You aren't the only one that has requested that I do a look inside video on that speaker. No doubt it looks impressive for the money. If RSL is willing to send me one for review I will definitely do it, but I think my channel is too small to matter at the moment. Maybe if enough of my subscribers reach out to them about sending me a review sample they will? ;)
The external amp you plugged into the sub later on…have you used that to power the CSS 550P? What is the model? Looks like OSD or Monoprice? Thanks Was looking at the OSD SMP-500DSP but it’s a little pricey unless I can find it on sale. Still on the hunt for what to use on my CSS 550P
Hello Mike! The amplifier I used is a Monoprice SWA-400 amplifier. Monoprice claims it will output 400 watts however on my bench I could only get 285 watts before it started clipping. I love the amplifier and features, but I wish Monoprice was a bit more honest about it's output rating. I bought it on sale for $200 a few months ago. Even though it only outputs 285 watts I think its a decent price even at $200. It doesn't have enough power to drive the SDX10 to its full potential though.
Man it sucks that the amp is crap. cant wait for the LA365 review. i so badly want a pair of those and i have been a fan of cerwin vega since the early 90`s
The LA365 are very impressive considering how affordable they are. I honestly don't know how they can offer this floor standing speaker for so little money. I think a lot of people will be impressed with not only the parts quality but also the design techniques that they used to maximize sound quality. I'm hoping to have the Look Inside video out for the LA365 on 4/15 depending on my work load.
Yeah if you have 8 foot ceilings, your room is a combined total of 7200 cu.ft. That is an extremely large room to try and fill with anything smaller than a ported 15" sub, if you want to get to cinema level volume.
The subwoofer that is assigned to this large room is my SVS SB-3000 and it has plenty of head room to fill it with bass that you can feel. The SB-3000 is one of my favorite subwoofers for around $1000. You're correct, ceiling height especially vaulted ceilings can have a big impact on a subwoofer's performance too.
From the spec-sheet I'd say they spec it as 100W, which would correlate well with the sine-wave going out of shape at about half that. They could have set it as 100W with 10% THD, and you'd be shocked how bad a waveform can look by 10%. It certainly seems to be the weak point for the design, but rather that than the driver beating itself to death from a manufacturer standpoint
@@TokeBoisen I'm thinking the latter (faulty amplifier). I don't want to speculate so I'm going to wait until CV responds. IMO a lot of manufacturers can be a bit optimistic with their amplifier's power rating. Cerwin Vega isn't the first and they definitely won't be the last.
These subwoofers have a dirty signal . I got a humming sound conning from a brand new xls 12s. I sent it back and CV did not acknowledge the fault and charged me a restocking fee . I don’t like CV subwoofers. Other people have acknowledged the humming issue on other forums. The problem is the on-board amplifier does not have good filtration when you have other components connected. I fix the issue by replacing the 12xls with a Klipsh 121sw . I dint do anything else but remove the Cerwin Vega . Pure garbage sub !!

First sub I've seen and heard was a Cervin vega I was probably about 5 or 6 years old. Properly what started my interest in bass
I'm still using the Cerwin Vega HT-10PWR subwoofer.

@@tbone8839 Not yet. I sent another email right after this video went live but haven't heard back.
I think you need a pair of these subs in stereo with the LA44 towers to make the best of it for a vega setup...then for the price its pretty slick.

War of the Worlds and Tenet, nice!
We need a pt.2 🤟🤑 "amp upgrade"
haha! I would love do a build with this cabinet if I could get my hands on a CV Stroker driver.

Cerwin Vegas come with allot of extras but we need more power
If youre serious this is Nr1 reason to build diy passiv subwoofers, yes you need 2 just loafing along, on idle.
Oh man, that amp should be illegal!
I'm hoping the one I received is defective because this sub does have potential when connected to a decent amplifier.
From the spec-sheet I'd say they spec it as 100W, which would correlate well with the sine-wave going out of shape at about half that. Welp, nvm, they spec it as 1% THD at rated power. That seems like either a big fat lie or you have a faulty amp
