    Certainly is a balancing act between all out grip and all out fun! I much preferred my Turbo Mx5 on 195 AD08Rs over the 215 R888Rs. Lap times suffered but it was totally worth it and sooo much more progressive and engaging! Great vid Quinn, Looking forward to getting my AP1 out for a few track days soon, Oulton Park and Anglesey in the next couple of months.

      @Matt Wiser - but that’s what makes the cars that are still on the road worth so much (once prices start going up for super clean OEM examples)
      Honda has been playing around with 8,000rpm+ since the 80s and 90s. Seems like the time has come for them to actually make TORQUE and play with Turbo’s, which is what they’re doing now. Haha.
      Save the B, H, K and C series engines!!!

      Artem Brayson yeah I know, it’s just so sad to see the end of such an epic era. I guess it won’t be long before super clean examples start coming up for sale as imports from Japan. I would assume a clean low mileage US car is probably stupid expensive...

I wish you had combined this with a talking part going through the car and the mods (as in what was done to achieve the 232whp) and why you love it so much - by hey, that can be another video (just don't leave it so long this time :p) . Shame it wasn't on some AD08Rs or similar for the lap time, but wouldn't have been so lairy (which I understand makes better viewing), but is obviously slower than grip driving.

      @@MikeRT4 Wow even with your aggressive suspension/coilover setup, thats remarkable to hear 👍. I guess thats why Honda chose those seats for their NSX-R. To be fair, the MX-5s have always been priced relatively lower than the S2000s (when they were both brand new), so thats probably why the F20c engines will always remain unbeaten in the 4 cyl naturally aspirated RWD category. Honestly, the 2019 model ND MX-5 with BBR's 'Super 220' comes pretty close to the experience you'll get from the S2000 (even though it took them at least 20yrs to catch up 😅).

Great car, especially for an old 90s car. Fantastic gearbox and steering just like the S2000. The car isn't as go-kart like in feel as the S2000 and the long gearing hurt its fun factor for street driving. Sharper 2nd gear turns were very uneventful. Hey dude, do most guys that casually track their cars like this get some kind of race insurance for the day or do most just wing it and hope they don't trash their car and fix it out of pocket worst case? Interested in tracking my car there soon, and not sure if I should get insurance for it. I don't even plan to have full coverage for the street with my rx8 since all my cars are under 10k in value. Thanks

    • @TheSlipAngle
      @TheSlipAngle  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For this venue, track insurance is not worth it. It's very low risk here. For Lime Rock big track, it may not be a bad idea. Almost every track day there someone leaves the track on a flatbed.

  • @Domas64
    @Domas64 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Quinn. I get your tire "strategy" to be able to hoon around cars. I run my miata with sticky 100tw tires. Since I drive it in all weather, I can hoon it around in the rain and then experience endless grip in the dry. What do you think about that? Do you drive in the rain too? Maybe your RX8.
    P.S. 100tw tires are quite hoonable in the dry if they are cold :)

    • @TheSlipAngle
      @TheSlipAngle  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been there and done that. It used to be 200 TW religiously for all of the cars. The problem is that doesn't rain all that much and I am not competing with anyone. The other problem is that when it's warm out there is just too much grip and it means going much faster to exploit the chassis. As I get older, the consequences weigh in too much. Not to mention, too much grip just makes the car boring for me. I want the car to be loose and alive. Even with a tire handicap I can out drive just about anyone if I need to on the street (Not that I wind up in those situations often ever since the enthusiast scene is kind of dead in New England) This track surface is much less grippy than the street too, so keep in mind I am not getting this much hoonability on the street like I can in these track videos. So the tire choices I run offer a great balance. I still have to work a little to get big rotation on the street so they allow a little fun safely without having to go stupid fast.

    Love how your car (+all your other cars pretty much) 'rotates' when cornering - what the Japanese car enthusiasts would called 'zero countersteer' when they drive EVOs with their AYC systems. By the way, how do you find your 'Hardtop Quieting' mod for your S2000? Has it still been quite effective at reducing interior noise? Thanks Quinn!

    I bought an S2000 and was disappointed, I own a Civic EP3 Type R (I live in Europe) and the S2K is less raw to me, the Vtec kicks in way stronger in the K20A2 than the F20C... on the other hand the chassis of the S2K is better since its lower CG and therefore less roll etc, the top down is great but engine wise I prefer my civic! Ended up selling the S2K and bought an STI.

    • @TheSlipAngle
      @TheSlipAngle  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've driven square setups. I'm running a slightly smaller stagger than the stock AP2 stagger, so 225/245 vs 215/245 of the stock AP2. I'd like to find another set of the rear RG2's I have on here to make it square, but I think it's going to require aftermarket fenders to fit.

    • @ayowser01
      @ayowser01 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheSlipAngle so you do prefer the way a square setup drives? I was curious as to why you kept the staggered wheel setup when you upgraded your wheelset.
      I went from a 225/255 to a 255/255. I added a stiffer/larger, eibach fsb and J's RCAs to balance it out. It works great. Deeper braking and more cornering grip.
      Going 255 square does require fender roll w/slight flare+rear tab relocation, and RCAs can't hurt.

    You mention that you want a shorter final drive for the s2000 right. I think you can fit your old 4.4 ring and pinion that you remove from your rx8 to your s2000. You can also get a 4.77 for it ( same as your new diff in your rx8). Search weir perfromance. Theyre selling it for 300-400 usd. I have an s2000 ap1 with 4.77 (source from a kia sportage 4wd front diff )and a subaru brz with 4.88 ( source from an aftermarket motive gear toyota v6 8, inch) final drive. Really wakes up the car. If you use the old rx8 4.4, you might get away of just reusing the bearings and shims from the rx8 ( provided they use the same pinion bearing and side bearings as your s2000) so you dont need to reshim it. Just check your backlash and teeth contack with diff marking paint after the swap. Goodluck with the swap.

    • @TheSlipAngle
      @TheSlipAngle  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The RX-8 uses an 8" ring and pinion so it won't fit unfortunately. There was an article floating around that said it was 7" but that is incorrect. The S2000 uses a 7" just like the Miata and the Kia. I had a Kia 4.77 in one of my Miata differentials for a while. I almost want to switch to an AP2 trans for the better cruise rpm in 6th and shorter 1-5. With that I'd just throw my spare 4.3 from a Miata in my stock diff and call it a day :)

      The RX-8's tires a little grippier, the RX-8 gearing was a more ideal for this track and it's suspension does much better with bumps, so those factors lead to the slightly faster laptime. If tire grip was the same, the S2000 should have the advantage due to it's higher power output and lower weight.

I was pleasantly surprised with high end power and better brakes and some other things. But while exiting the corner you have to fight all the time with steering wheel to control the car. Way slower than my 4th gen on exits. And it matter because you built speed on exits for next line. I have potenza on both cars. My ap1 bone stock tho. Because you have a channel and tested more cars i am sure you can find a 4th gen . Not 5th because is poor weight distribution. 4th is closer to 50/50. And i am taking about time not the fun factor.

The Jun Prelude was competitive against the MCR S2000 but was still a little slower than the orange Amuse S2000. Again it's all setup and what you are trying to do. No car is the wrong answer. Try commuting from say San Diego to LA after X'mas and stuck on I-5. Plus to get the best one needs to rev it.
