    Nate, I just have to share:
    Today was exciting. My "pet" working line GSD has demonstrated good "down in motion" while heeling. I started putting him in "down" while on release "breaks" and during active recall in line of sight toward me, also with a good/fast response.
    Today, for the first time, I threw balls and commanded "down" while running AWAY from me, where he's motivated to get the ball, AND CAN'T SEE any hand/body signals. And he went into fast, perfect downs!!! While running away from me!
    I'm so delighted with my brilliant boy. He may not be ready for competition yet, but at three years old, he's still incredibly smart and willing to do new things! I feel like today was a special accomplishment. I also think German Shepherds are VERY GOOD at "generalizing" certain things. While I can't necessarily depend on him to successfully generalize every behavior or command, I'm always SO THRILLED when he does. He hasn't won any "titles", but he's the BEST German Shepherd in the world as far as I'm concerned!!🐾❤😁❤🐾

    • @Karina-Loves-Andreas
      @Karina-Loves-Andreas 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ivanhacks Really, the main reason I'd like to title him is because I haven't ruled out breeding yet. But there are full health checks (hips, spine, etc), temperament testing (I believe), before I could even consider it. I'm so biased; just because I think he's the best GSD ever, doesn't actually mean he should be bred.
      But the best thing about solid training is the improved bond and increased freedom & fun I can have with my dog. I love how every walk is "play time", a little adventure for us, because I know he can be trusted to listen & respond. Our walks are extremely interactive between us. When he's not in a heel, he's constantly looking back and "checking in" with me. It's at least half the fun (or more) of enjoying him. Even if we never get a title, he's just so much more fun, we're much more bonded, because of training obedience😍👍👍😁🐾

    My working line GSD is safe off leash while wearing an e collar now (even though I rarely stim, it's mostly a safety backup. Used on low levels for positioning reinforcement and to get his attention when distractions cross our path mostly). I carry a "Chuck It" ball thrower stick. I find it works very well in place of a "position stick" if he wants to forge ahead on "heel", plus I get to use it to throw balls, lol!! Walking off leash now that I have reliable obedience is SUCH A PLEASURE. He does wear his e collar outside the house & yard, whether I stim him (usually low level unless it's an extremely rare "emergency") or not. Most walks, I don't bother with any stim. But it's there if necessary. YOUR teaching, Nate, helped us get to this point. And main point: Chuck It stick makes an excellent, dual purpose positioning stick!!😄❤🐾👍👍🐾❤😘🐾

      @@ivanhacks me too! He loves it! So much fun for us both. But with a big, strong working line dog, you HAVE TO BE CAREFUL, and take it slow. Having calls placed to Animal Control IS NOT something you can afford if you love a big working line, high drive dog, a GSD, Malinois, Ridgeback, Corso, Mastiff, Staffordshire, etc. You MUST go slowly and be POSITIVE you have complete control if very attractive distractions appear. I love my boy very much. It took a lot of work to get us here. I could NEVER risk him being taken away from me. But he's SOLID after months, maybe a years work (still playful, fun & engaging!). I haven't prematurely given any off leash "privileges", he's earned them slowly. My greatest fear is he does a "natural" dog behavior that would be excused in a Lab, Retriever, or Doodle, like jumping on a kid, but since he's a German Shepherd, could wind up with "euthanization" (he's actually PERFECT with kids. Even toddlers. I've proofed him a lot). He HAS to be "extra tight, extra obedient"....and he is!! I love him very much. And I'm VERY proud of him!!❤😌

    Ahhhh...such a good refresher, and indication of what's to come! Easily digestible information.
    I use "place" instead of "climb". The word itself means nothing to my dog. But because I "placed" my dog on a towel and fed long lasting frozen Kong treats and bully sticks during "happy hour" with my neighbors on their adjoining deck during COVID (their Aussie would lay on a towel as well with the same treats, while the humans chatted, enjoyed music & a glass of wine or beer and snacks), he developed a very positive association to "place". I'd already taught "place" to raised hammocks & environmental things like benches, picnic tables, big electrical boxes. I'm not sure why some people teach both "place" & "climb". I'm sure there's a reason. But my dog has generalized "place" and a point to any surface, even a flat one like a concrete drain, that doesn't look like area surrounding it. It comes in very handy if I take him to a clinic, friend's house, or restaurant that allows dogs, and simply put a towel down and ask him to go to "place". "Place" means flat or raised in his mind, and after months of enjoying treats on a towel, he's super happy to comply!!!😄

    Hi good video. I am not a fan of choke chains. The sticks are not good for certain rescue dogs. The prong is okay depending on the issue being addressed. The head halter is something I do like. I have success with dog-dog and dog-human aggression using the head halter. The E-Collar is outstanding for recall, but you mentioned that. The slip is necessary for getting rescue dogs out of their kennel, but I really do not like them. I change it up once we are out. TY this was an instructional video.

    I tried to use all the tricks to stop my puppy bites but its not helping are you sure that he will get over on biting?

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They usually stop when they are done teething at 6 months of age, but If the puppy enjoys biting and you want to stop it, then You may need to use a correction to stop the behavior. Correcting the behavior with a quick leash pop. However, you should keep this in mind when adding corrections:
      Corrections in dog training is when we are using positive punishment to stop an undesired behavior. First, we must keep in mind that everything our dogs do is based on motivation. The motivation to access something pleasant, or the motivation to prevent something unpleasant. If your dog is practicing a behavior that is fun (self-reinforcing behavior), then you have two options to stop this. One; make sure to prevent the dog from being able to practice the undesired behavior. The second option is to use a correction to stop the behavior. A correction can be anything the dog doesn't like. So in the end, the motivation not to receive the correction must override the motivation to do the undesired behavior.
      If you use a correction and the undesired behavior continues, then the correction is not high enough. Here's an analogy to help understand this concept. It's important to remember that every dog has their bank account (their correction level). Some dogs are very wealthy, and some are penniless, just like people. Let's say that you are speeding down the highway and a police officer pulls you over and writes you a 25 cent-speeding ticket. The second the officer leaves, you will start speeding again because the ticket wasn't high enough to get you to change your behavior. But let's say he pulls you over and writes you a ten-million-dollar speeding ticket, now it's so high that you will avoid driving altogether, and you will be very stressed out. On the other hand, let's say he pulls you over and writes you a $125 speeding ticket. That would be enough to get you to slow down, without causing you to avoid the behavior of driving altogether. This is what we must do with our dogs; we need to correct them at a level that is adequate to their bank account. If the dog doesn't stop the bad behavior, then you may have to increase the correction. Just be sure to correct the dog in the act.
      In addition, proper corrections should not create a fearful dog. Usually fear when correcting a dog is due to the owner being angry, yelling at the dog, or correcting too hard. When we use a correction, it's simple cause and effect. A correction should never be personal and you should never yell at your dog. Once the correction is done, then we praise and reward our dog when they're doing what we like. If your dog knows why he/she is being corrected and knows how to prevent the correction from happening, then you shouldn't create any fear.
      Leash pop: This is when you make a snapping motion with the dog’s leash to engage the training-collar to give the dog a correction (a positive-punishment). If you're using a flat collar and that's not working, then you may need to use a prong collar to stop the behavior.
      I hope this helps!

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe it's important for puppies to have opportunities to play and interact with other dogs. However, during the critical imprinting stage that occurs within the first 16 weeks of life, it's helpful to limit how much access the puppy has to other dogs. Once the imprinting stage is over, you can still focus on strengthening your bond with your pup. Remember that every dog is motivated by different things, so it's very helpful to train your puppy early on to enjoy playing and training with you above other activities, if possible.
