  • This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. In a gently instructive TEDxJohannesburg 2014 talk, South African fashion luminary Marianne Fassler explores her perspectives on the big questions of fashion: What is it? Where does it come from? What does it mean?
Multiple award-winning Marianne Fassler has been the owner and director of Mode Avantgarde for the past 34 years. With a BA Hons from the University of the Witwatersrand, Fassler is a three-time Catherine Award-winner and received the SA Fashion Awards Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005, amongst many others. Fassler’s design studio ‘Leopard Frock’ is situated in Saxonwold, Johannesburg.

The phrase "you are addressed how you dress" highlights the powerful impact of attire on how individuals are perceived in a professional environment. What we wear in the workplace often serves as a reflection of our level of professionalism, respect for the organization, and awareness of its culture. The saying suggests that your appearance can influence how others view your commitment, competence, and seriousness about your role.
In the workplace, appropriate attire not only boosts personal confidence but also communicates that you understand the expectations of the environment. When you dress professionally, you show respect for yourself, your colleagues, and the organization's values. It is not just about adhering to a dress code but aligning your clothing choices with the standards that foster a productive, respectful, and inclusive work culture.
However, dressing appropriately is just one aspect of professional conduct. While appearance matters, behavior how we treat others, how we communicate, and how we contribute to the team's success is equally important. To foster a healthy work environment, we must ensure that respect, fairness, and integrity guide not just how we dress but how we engage with one another and perform in our roles.
Ultimately, the way we dress in the workplace should be viewed as a reflection of our commitment to professionalism, our understanding of the organization's culture, and our respect for those we work with. At the same time, organizations must create an environment where merit, fairness, and mutual respect are prioritized, allowing everyone the opportunity to succeed based on their abilities and contributions.

I wear very simple items that make me blend in the crowd. I have my own rules to it but it doesn't really show to other people, so everyone always (I know, these two are big words) tell me I don't stand out, should finally find my style, experiment and be original... But this is who I am. This is my style - plain and simple. :)

A lot of people wear clothes that actually WEAR THEM. I don't know if you know this, but a good frame (on a picture) is one that is NOT noticeable. Perhaps YOU have it right ... and wear clothes that let YOU shine. Another reason for dressing simply; being Virgo ... or Capricorn.

It's okay, as long as you feel good in the clothes. Not everyone can pull of the basic style, there is an art in it as well. So don't worry and do you.

If we had no spoken language, and attended a party, who would we choose to gravitate to... I say the way people are dressed. Even people who say I don't dress for anyone is making a statement about who they are...
