2 GLARING omissions, either of which could be ranked #1 on this list are 'The Mack' and 'Willie Dynamite.' If you're getting into blaxploitation, these 2 are must watch!
How are these a "must watch" in the genre? They're not foundations of the genre like Shaft, Superfly or Sweet Sweetback. Willie Dynamite was pretty decent, though - one of the better ones. But the Mack was terrible - it was exactly like the rest, recycled in every way, boring as hell (I even skipped thru some of the scenes, it was unwatchable) and as cheap as most of the other ones. It blurs in with the rest. And Goldie was boring - Max Julien is not really leading man material. He felt kind of cardboard and doesn't have the charisma of Richard Roundtree or Roscoe Orman or Pam Grier, etc. He was pretty forgettable. Fuck the Mack. What a waste of time. Everything about it was standard, by the book, and disposable.
I was raised on these films ...Saw most of them in the theatre as a child in the 70s. The heroes looked like me and the men in my family and that was very, very profound as a young Black Man to see and experience this...The 60s into the 70s We Black people were at our Cultural, Political and Artistic height... Especially the Music that was the Soundtracks to most of these films.. That’s why I have come terms that this era of film is not “Blaxploitation..”But “The Soul Renaissance “era... Can You Dig it... If you can...Then Let it Be Dug....
That's right, it was profound, and it was conditioning you, just like media conditions people today, now look at us all. . . this was evil, and it was subversive.
Alot of people are getting the wrong end of a very long stick. Blaxsplotation actually falls under explotation films which included sexplotation and carsploitation plus a whole lot more. Explotation movies are just films which attempts to succeed financially by exploiting current trends, niche genres, or lurid content. Exploitation films are generally low-quality "B movies".
Fun fact: Black Belt Jones was the inspiration behind Black Dynamite because the character is largely the same archetype (i.e. weird shouting when doing his moves, caring to a fault, etc.)
My Top 10 would be1. The Mack2. Superfly3. Coffy4. Shaft5. Black Cesar6. Across 110th Street7. Foxy Brown8. Hit Man(Starring Bernie Casey)9. Shaft's Big Score10. Dolemite
If you liked some of the intro songs in the video, get yourself a copy of a CD called "Badmutha's: 18 Original Black Movie Hits". In a lot of cases, the soundtracks for these movies are way better than the movies themselves. (Side note, Superfly's sound track made more money than the movie did, and is rightly considered a classic).
This list was good ,BUT Willie Dynamite and THE MACK should have been on it for sure and like other people said Superfly had one of the GREATEST soundtracks of ALL TIME by Curtis Mayfield.😀
You trippin. No Youngblood, Miseducation of Sonny Carson, Cooley High, Uptown Saturday Night, Claudine, Willie Dynamite, Truck Turner, or Hell up in Harlem?
My favorite is Foxy Brown, I just love that film. My Second favorite is Sugar Hill 1974. Its a revenge film like Foxy Brown only with Zombies. Its a really strong film and should have been on the list instead of Blackula. Also Roger Moore, James Bond, Live and Let Die. Sure it has a white lead, but to me, in many ways its a blaxploitation film. Also one of the best Bond films of all time. This one is an homage to the the films. It might be because Michael Jai White a hero of mine, and I got to meet him earlier this year, but, I love Black Dynamite. Could also be because I love Salli Richardson.
Fun list. It takes me back. However, I think the term 'blaxploitation' should be retired. I tend to use the term 'soul cinema', which feels better and more accurate to me. I was a movie-going teen at the time and these films didn't come across as exploitation; certainly no more than Hollywood normally takes advantage of a moneymaking trend. As far as I can tell, the martial arts genre, which followed, hasn't been saddled with the "exploitation" title; nor the disco phase, which followed that, and so on, and so on.
I'd seen nearly all the the Blacksploitation movies on this list thanks to home video. One film I hadn't yet seen (which stars the Dolemite lead actor) is Petey Wheatstraw: the Devil's Son-in-Law.
I'd rather watch "Blaxploitation" movies than Roots, 12 Years A Slave, Selma and the rest of that slavery/civil rights stuff. How much longer will Hollywood try to rehash this?!?
There seems to be some confusion. The "exploitation" genre of movies are just movies that exploit a current trend, usually cheaply made and quickly put together. The term "blaxploitation" is just a term used for movies in the exploitation genre that feature a mostly black cast aimed at a black audience. The word "exploitation" in this case has nothing to do with capitalizing on the exploitation of black people or use of stereotypes. Although that was a different issue in and of itself.
Blaxploitation maybe a word for black exploitation. I never have understood this term. This gave black actors a way to do their jobs, when the liberal Hollywood was not casting them. Showing black issues. These were pretty well made independent filmd
this is my fourth viewing of a top-10 blaxploitation list in the last few weeks. the inconsistency is remarkable. the last list i saw had "the mack" at #1. it's get honorable mention in this countdown. another video didn't even mention "blacula" but it's #4 in this countdown. go figure.
Blaxploitatoin films were films made by large companies that capitalized on the exploitation of black people, especially with regard to stereotypes; pimps, hoes, drug dealers. In most of the films the writers were white with no real knowledge of black people/cultures and no input from black people. @WatchMojo is wrong; "Sweet Sweetback" WAS NOT a blaxploitatoin film by the very definition. It was written, independtly produced and financed by a black man and actually dealt with real community issues. It did however birth the genre. Based on it's success, Hollywood cashed in on the premise, as it discovered black people and people in urban areas would attend movies with predominantly black casts; and thus Blaxploitatoin was born. If you really wanna get an understanding of Blaxploitatoin however, watch the parody/satirical comedy "HOLLYWOOD SHUFFLE," by Robert Townsend and Keenan Ivory Wayans.
Across 110th Street was a much larger production than a Blaxploitation movie. It played in larger theaters, and drew in white audiences. Many of the films on the list only played in theaters in black neighborhoods, and few whites would attend theaters in those neighborhoods.
I've seen all of these films listed, and none is nearly as good as "Truck Turner" with Isaac Hayes, which didn't even make the list. Great action, camerawork, dialogue, music..everything you need from the genre. "Truck Turner" is the best Blaxploitation movie ever, and it's not even close.
What, Black Dynamite didn't make the list? And no, I'm not talking about the "Adult Swim" animated series. Not all blaxploitation movies had to be made in the '70s.
Can a comedy (assuming it's not a genre parody like "Black Dynamite", "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka", "Undercover Brother", etc) still be blaxploitation? Because I'd like to see "Car Wash" considered for inclusion in this list.
Cotton Comes To Harlem, Slaughter, Truck Turner, Three The Hard Way, and Cooley High are on my top 10. I'd keep Foxy Brown, Coffy, Superfly, Shaft, and Across 110 Street.
Blacula is my favourite of the list. Ironically it's also the only horror film to show the Dracula character as he's actually described in the Stoker novel! (long gray hair and a moustache and dressed in black with no speck of colour). Interestingly Charles Macauly also played Dracula in an episode of Night Gallery. I would say Coffey is my second favourite (I have yet to see the sequel Foxy Brown). I can see that the film Jackie Brown was heavily inspired by Coffey! I was very surprised by how much! Even to the extent of hiring the leading lady!
MY Top 10 ( might not be the best, but I love watching these) 1.Cooley High 2.Super Fly 3.Shaft 4.Black Caesar 5.Foxy Brown 6.Let's Do It Again 7.Across 110th Street 8.Uptown Saturday Night ( If you don't know Sharp Eye Washington....you better) 9.Car Wash (Daddy Rich...ok?) 10.Mandingo ( Cicero's speech was enough for me) Other favorites: Coffy, Hitman,Cornbread,Earl & Me ( Larry Fishburne debut), Melinda ( Calvin Lockhart's swag),Cotton Comes To Harlem, Five On The Black Hand Side( Barbershop scene/ lotta rap samples), Gordon's War, The Spook Who Sat By The Door, Blacula (Skillet..aka Cicero in Mandingo.." Mamawaulde when you gonna let me wear that cape?"),Piece of The Action( Sheryl Lee Ralph's verbal assault).I never really liked The Mack, because I didn't feel Max Julien should've been the lead.I would've liked " Pretty Tony" as The Mack...Julien was too laid back for my taste.
My favorite Blaxploitation movie is Sugar Hill. That movie is this interesting combination of Foxy Brown, voodoo zombie films (movies like White Zombie). It's just so fun to watch.
It will be the "black folks were duped by white liberals who used them for their OWN purposes". Black America has made little progress, even though they have been promised the moon... they only got some cheese.
My top 10 are 1. Superfly 2. Shaft 3. The Mack 4. Black Caesar 5. Truck Turner 6. Cleopatra Jones 7. Hell Up In Harlem 8. Let's Do It Again 9. Across 110th Street 10. Trouble Man Honorable Mentions *Willie Dynamite *Three The Hard Way *Slaughter *All Pam Grier
How did i know Shaft was going to be number one. That is everyone's typical go to movie when talking of this topic. Just like everyone claim Biggie or Tupac is their number one rapper.
some of these films were released in Italy in the 70s, with the titles modified for example "Across 110th street" was changed to “Rubare alla mafia è un suicidio” ! 😊
I remember a lot of these movies. My thought, "about time". They were no more bad/cheesier than anything else out there. OK, I admit "Blackula" was really cheesy. Never saw "Blackenstien" though. Looks as bad as "Blackula", or worse. Can't win them all.
Black Dynamite is a spoof but rivals some of the best films from the 70s era

YES
I’ve met her and she’s also a wonderful person!!! Love her.
How can you talk about Super Fly without mentioning the Curtis Mayfield soundtrack? And Truck Turner should have got an honourable mention.
Duncan Anderson typical WatchMojo negligence... The narrator also didnt mention Isaac Hayes as the artist behind the Shaft soundtrack...
Exactly Curtis did a lot of soundtracks in the 70s! & truck Turner is too underrated. Gr8 movie
Duncan Anderson Right!
@@val9170 Truck Turner has a decent soundtrack as well. ^___^
coffy is better than foxy brown in my opinion...and these films had legendary soundtracks
coffy is the color
I can dig it
Coffee is waaaaay better. Foxy Brown just has the more iconic name
Agreed
Will *Shaft* be number one? You're damned right!!!
When you got that glow.....
It's a bad mothaf-
The intro song for Shaft alone makes the show number one. Can you dig it? Also I think Foxy Brown should've been number 2.
Right on...
I can dig it!
Pam Grier was not only beautiful, she was an underrated actress.
Solid list, but they forgot to mention one of the biggest features of Superfly - the absolutely fantastic music by Curtis Mayfield.
IMO the best soundtrack for a movie ever
wheres the love for Brother from Another Planet
"Car Wash " can also be considered a blaxplotation movie.
Exactly
Damn right...
Shaft is definitely a good choice! I don't know if it is just me but back then those movies felt better than most blockbusters today
The Mack will forever be one of my favorites. Goldie was just so smooth
Man if it was up to me all Pam Grier movies would be in the top 5
i second that yes absolutely pam =awesome she is trully impressive age seems to have never laid its hands on her either she is a fave atress of mine for sure
hahahaha she sure was foxy as hell
She had/has screen presence like few actors do. Hell of a talent.
Yea its not fair
"The Mack" only getting an honorable mention and not bringing up Superfly's amazing soundtrack... cmon son
This is watchmojo
The Mack should've been number one not an honorable mention
No mention to Curtis Mayfield in Super Fly? One of the greatest soundtrack ever
Pam Grier. Hotter than the fucking sun.

Throw in black belt jones as well

1
I remember that list
+sneakydog101 what
Pam Grier was one of my first TV crushes as a young kid. Then I seen Thelma on good times and it was jungle fever for life
The Mack should've been on this list. I know it was an honorable mention, but it's a classic for the genre.
Max Julian was fantastic

My favorite blaxploitation movie "Live and Let Die"
Fun fact: Black Belt Jones was the inspiration behind Black Dynamite because the character is largely the same archetype (i.e. weird shouting when doing his moves, caring to a fault, etc.)
Actually, it was a direct spoof on Four The Hard Way. Jim Kelly was in that movie. Its a great movie if you ever have the chance to see it.

Three the Hard Way is a classic blaxploitation flick as well.

I'm probably late to the party but I'm trying to binge on blaxploitation movies these days, anything with Pam Grier's name on it will do!
Idk much about blaxploitation but these films' scores are gold.
Black Mama, White Mama should be number one for the shower scenes alone.
BIMMOM that was more of a Woman in prison film, which is the genre Pam got her start in with Big Doll House for Roger Corman, than Blaxsploitation.
Even though its half Blaxploitation i think Djangl Unchained and Live and Let Die should be on this list
Where's WILLIE DYNAMITE?
After watching this list im probably going to check out most of these, thanks.
The Mack should have been in the top 3
Cleopatra Jones was the best of them all and one of my favorite all-time drive-in movies. Can you dig it baby!

There seems to be some confusion. The "exploitation" genre of movies are just movies that exploit a current trend, usually cheaply made and quickly put together. I think the exploitation part may have more to do with the fact that it's about street crimes. That said, it did give more black actors work.
Can you name a time when Hollywood was conservative??
Doubtful since most were fighting street crime. Though they did have a lot of things that shouldn't be crimes
No its just because blacks cant read the script.
These movies didn't show black issues, just stereotypes and jive talking. Some are entertaining but they have nothing to do with the black experience.
I finally understood why Shawn Wayans made that joke in one of his episodes, "who does she think she is, Foxy Brown"
Doesn’t Django Unchained count? I know I’m 2 years late but that film was incredible

The Mack is the most artistically important blaxploitation film.
great list!! do you have any suggestions of blackspoltaion movies that are not on the list?
Blaxploitatoin films were films made by large companies that capitalized on the exploitation of black people, especially with regard to stereotypes; pimps, hoes, drug dealers. In most of the films the writers were white with no real knowledge of black people/cultures and no input from black people. @WatchMojo is wrong; "Sweet Sweetback" WAS NOT a blaxploitatoin film by the very definition. Truck Turner is one that should’ve gotten an honorable mention.❤
that funky style "the metters" or Issac Hayes music is awesome :)
The fact that boss nigga isn't on this list.... injustice.
I suggested this list to watch mojo this is so awesome!!! But "The Mack" should've been in the top three.
Across 110th Street was a much larger production than a Blaxploitation movie. It played in larger theaters, and drew in white audiences. Many of the films on the list only played in theaters in black neighborhoods, and few whites would attend theaters in those neighborhoods.

Can a comedy (assuming it's not a genre parody like "Black Dynamite", "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka", "Undercover Brother", etc) still be blaxploitation? Because I'd like to see "Car Wash" considered for inclusion in this list.
This list is remarquable, and I've seen most of this movies. But personally I would rank Coffy N°2 and JACKIE BROWN N°1.
I bet none of the studs at WATCHMOJO have ever seen a Blaxploitation Movie.
Dolemite deserves to be ranked much higher than 9. You can even make the case for it being No. 1.
Cotton Comes To Harlem, Slaughter, Truck Turner, Three The Hard Way, and Cooley High are on my top 10. I'd keep Foxy Brown, Coffy, Superfly, Shaft, and Across 110 Street.
I like Blacula. I might have to put Cooley High 11.
