Ancient Rylanor's Last Stand

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 10 ก.พ. 2025
- This epic battle scene is from The Sons of the Emperor Anthology - The Ancient Awaits. Ancient Rylanor managed to survive on Istvaan III for several thousand years after the Heresy. A squad of Thousand Sons sorcerers went back there after hearing a distress signal and found where it had originated from. Fulgrim himself had personally showed up to take care of Rylanor. The sorcerers were so inspired by Rylanor resisting Fulgrim's corruption that they sacrificed themselves by setting off the very last Virus Bomb on Istvaan III to defeat the Daemon Primarch, finally allowing Rylanor to die in service of the Emperor.

Of course a thing to keep in mind is that the Thousand Sons turned traitor more through forced circumstance rather than choice.
Something else to keep in mind is that this is 100% a Changer of Ways Tzeentchian event. If the Thousand Sons were not there, Fulgrim wouldnt have been able to revel in the moment of his pride and triumph so much, and then have it taken away from him, weakening a significant champion of Slaanesh

Fulgrim didn't just fail at turning Rylanor. Rylanor turned the thousand sons back to his side. You can't recover from that. Rylanor's sheer honor had the thousand sons looking back, and seeing they were wrong, by extension, the possibility of Fulgrim being wrong.

Rylanor was the perfect astartes. And that was his great victory over Fulgrim, he achieved something Fulgrim never has: perfection.
@@Armataan Technically it wasn't an accident. Tzeentch messed up the Rubric on purpose and it made Ahriman think he did it wrong so he went on a search for more information on how to reverse the rubric and do it correctly next time. Rylanor was such an excellent character. I'm glad he got to go out with honor.
But not before a very cruel desecration, it was not a glorious end, more merciful perhaps
@@lelagrangeeffectphysics4120 I think that makes it even more glorious. He was rendered completely helpless, the most vulnerable a man could possibly be, and knew Fulgrim had the ability to inflict a fate worse than death on him, and STILL told him to go fuck himself. He was judged as entirely lacking by fellow traitors who sided with the dying and rotting scrap of flesh that was all that remained of Rylanor.

Bro was so loyal that he made 3 thousands sons back to loyalty
They weren't becoming loyal. Think about it, Thousand Sons never wanted to turn traitors. They were forced into that position, forced to align with the traitor legions for the sake of bare survival (something that we have Horus to thank for). But they accepted that fate, believing that the Emperor ordered their execution and burning of Prospero. Vistario and his brothers who accompanied him are those few who did not became dust, but that does not mean they did not went on and explored the depths of what Warp can give them. In all likelihood, as many other Thousand Sons sorcerers do, they sold their skills to various warbands in exchange for slave labor, fragments of maps that lead into Webway, relics or favors. Khayon goes into greater depth regarding what Thousand Sons tend to do with exception of some who are looking for a way to revert the Rubrik of Ahriman.
So, what happened in this scene? Well, life in Warp is cruel and vile is the only way to survive it. What they saw in Fulgrim is what they see every single day. Cruelty, depravity, endless hunger for more of everything. But Rylanor was a reminder of what it meant to be Astartes before the Horus Heresy. He likely reminded them what honor meant, what true brotherhood meant. He didn't turn them loyal to the Emperor of Mankind, he just reminded them that current Emperor's Children, and their primarch, are without honor and worth. They didn't align with the Emperor, they just remembered that they hate Fulgrim more. For a moment, Vistario regained his honor as a marine and died like a marine.
