  • Fourth of July weekend marks 90 days of owning our 1989 Bayliner 3888 MV. It has been a fair amount of work and a little bit of play. We hope to tip the scales towards play soon.
We spent Memorial Day with Gayle's sister and her family. For Fourth of July weekend we headed out to Penrose Point State Park, one of our favorite South Sound beaches. On the way back to our slip we checked out Cutts Island State Park which turned out to be a super cute little island. We definitely recommend you check it out if you are in the neighborhood.

The hydraulic steering failed on our 4th of July trip. You can check out the fix here:

I owned a 3888 for 29 years. You will find pumping out the holding tank will be easier if you hose water on the coupling while pumping. The water will help maintain a seal between the hose and waste cap. Also will find you need to pump longer than most dock guys will think as the waste tank is under the forward berth.

Being up on a plane burns a TON more fuel, and doesn't really make that much of a smaller wake. As for "fixing it" which engines do you have? Make sure it's propped to pull the right RPM at wide-open throttle. Bayliners Owners club has a ton of information. Our 3988 up on plane gets about 1 mpg, but at hull speed it's closer to 2. We spend a ton of time out at Cutts Island, if you get a chance you should head over to Lakebay Marina ( the state recently took it over, hope they don't ruin it).

Looks good! Please keep sharing progress of fixing her up. I just bought a 3870 in need of restoration and I could use the motivation/ ideas for restoring her!

Thanks for the encouragement! It's harder to stay motivated in the dark days of winter, but stay tuned for a galley refresh!
