Gayle, I plagiarized a solution from some other owners. The Admiral ordered construction of a larger to step going down to the galley. I rebuilt the “box” by making a longer stair jack that ends even with the mid cabin door. I had to cut the bottom rise at an angle so it didn’t interfere with the galley hatch. Then I split the difference at each end to get my tread configuration. I used Epe/ironwood for the treads because it has the look of teak at a third of the price. However, it has to be drilled and installed like steel. Too much torque on a flat head screw will cause it to split. The top step is split and opens for a great place to put the trash container. We also store some of our recycling in there.

That's a very intriguing idea. Although it sounds like a lot of work! Those stairs can be a little hard to navigate, that is a good solution to two problems. Thanks for sharing!

@@MikeandGayleAdventure Actually, it’s less work and fitting than installing the new galley sink. I’m sure we could make some kind of arrangement to meet or something to make it easier.

That dash box is amazing. Very nicely done. Our bayliner is a 3270 and we put the garbage can in the shower section of the head. - its right across from the galley.

Thanks! Our head is not across from the galley, I think we just need to be ok with garbage in the walkway...sigh.

    Lots of great improvements!
Our last boat was a 38 and we had a garbage can like you have that we kept just inside the guest room door. It was out of the way and easy access from galley.
I will also say the previous owners of our boat took the wood trim off the vertical sections of the cockpit- I didn’t miss them a bit and there was still plenty to varnish 🤪
We just replaced the anchor and chain on our new boat. You can get it cheaper on Amazon but there are grades of stainless so we ended up getting it at fisheries. We replaced it all and sold what had been on the boat so we would know there was no weak link for connection and we would know it was all sound. Our 38 the previous owners put a 25kg Rocna anchor on (they took her to Alaska) and it was a fantastic anchor. Our current bow pulpit won’t accommodate the rocna so we got the Vulcan which is same company but designed for our style of bow pulpit.
    Glad you’re enjoying it!!

Hi Mike and Gayle - We have a 3888 as well. I also know Pete, I am currently in process of rebuilding our stairs too so we'll have a place to put the trash. It's not the hardest job, if you're good with angles and know how to cover your mistakes (carpet lol) well you'll be fine. There's a decent amount of room under there that's not being used. It beats the heck out of kicking the trash can all over the place. Your boat is looking good, nice work!

Thanks for the input. We're deciding how much energy we have for winter projects, it's never ending :)

For trash, we put the container under the sink, but cut a large "notch" in the side so that you can put trash in without having to pull it out each time or bang your hand. (2002 Bayliner 3788)

Good job guys!!!! I like your galley it came out great. It seems you are getting rid of that teal color to. I hate it. Same squeal of the floor in the galley😊😊. I have the same boat 1988 with the hinos.👍

Thank you so much! Stay tuned, there are more changes coming. We worked on the squeal this weekend, fingers crossed it is better.

Loved the video. I just replaced the upstairs flybridge furniture, fuel tanks and water tank and New carpet on our 3870. Love your stove/oven mod. Did you change the microwave? If so what brand did you find that would fit the area hole? I would like to see what you have done to the battery bank. I am in need of upgrading mine. Look forward to the next video!! You guys rock!

Thanks! We didn't change the microwave, it still works and doesn't offend us so we're leaving it. If we have to replace it, we would do a smaller one and make some extra shelving or storage. We switched out the batteries and battery charger right after we got the boat. We'll see if we can walk through the battery/electrical system soon. Changing out the tanks must have been a huge project, yikes!

@@MikeandGayleAdventure Oh it was. Removing the stairs and guest state room wall. Tanks are under that bed. and the ripping up flooring to replace the water tank. Also had to fiberglass a new flooring under the water tank after cutting it out, rebuilding and the having new carpet installed. We are tired. Love seeing your travels and the mods.
