  • From "The Mary Tyler Moore Hour," another short-lived MTM comedy vehicle from 1979, here is Mary with guest star Dick Van Dyke, recreating their roles from 'The Dick Van Dyke Show (1961)' in two sketches. In one sketch Rob learns that Alan Brady is dead and Laura has gotten over exclaiming "Oh Rob!" The second sketch takes place in the far future, with Dick strutting his stuff as a very old man, still married to Laura! Very funny stuff here!! Original broadcast date was March 25, 1979; the quality of this is incredible for something so old!!!

It's strange that in another show, I believe it was called the Dick Van Dyke show revisited, (just a quick thing Carl Reiner put together in two or three parts) Rob was on the phone with Alan Brady and they were talking about last seeing each other at Buddy Surrell and Mel Cooly's memorials. Now only Dick is left out of everyone except, of Larry Mathews who played the son.

It's amazing how back when they filmed this in 1979, Dick had an idea of what a 90 year old man would look and act like, and yet here today he IS 92 years old and in so much better shape and in appearance, then how he thought it would be like back then. I always loved his skits.

Dick van Dyke was doing a commercial about Tai Chi from a Chinese man who had workouts and was saying how he exercised during his 40s , 50s, 70s so he would stay out of the retirement houses, and now in his 90s to live longer and healthier and to prevent broken bones (from falls).

Same way with Carol Burnett and Harvey Korman doing "The Old Folks" skit in the mid-70s. Carol is that age now and not at all like that crotchety person. People in their 70s and 60s in general are not at all like was foreseen for us. We're much more mobile and relevant. People our age are dating more so than people in their 20s.

The New Dick Van Dyke show was filmed in Cave Creek, Arizona. I grew up in Arizona, and one year my dad gave my mom and me tickets to the show (they were split by then and he was living in LA). The show was terrific and it was a great experience watching a show being filmed, how everything worked, and seeing the stars interact with the audience. Dick of course, was his wonderful, witty, and charming self. I am so grateful for the experience, it is a special memory for me. 🙂

I'd never seen this episode of this variety show of hers at the time, and the DVD Show skit. Moore comes across in it more as Mary Richards than as Laura Petrie--maybe since shed worn that iconic flip in color for so many seasons during her own ensuing MTM Show sitcom. But a treat to see them in those characters reunited in later years and in color, nonetheless. :)

All things considered it still turned out pretty great!

Mary literally had a platoon of writers at the outset of her 1979 variety hour.
Her head writer was Arnie Kogen {best known for his work on MAD magazine, and later for 'NEWHART"}.
The writers credited on this episode were:
      David Axelrod & Stan Burns
      Peter Gallay
      Carol Gary
      Robert Illes & James Stein
      Gary Jacobs
      Coslough Johnson
      Patricia Jones & Donald Reiker
      Pat Proft
Mary-David Sheiner & Sheila Judas Weisburg
      Aubrey Tadman & Garry Ferrier
....and Gary Belkin {another MAD writer} was credited as "creative consultant".
Now, imagine ALL of these talented writers were squeezed into *one room* {a la Rob, Sally and Buddy}- and Mary waltzes in, smiling through her teeth, barking........... *"I WANT YOU TO MAKE ME FUNNY THIS WEEK---- OR ELSE!!!!!!!!!!"*
Could YOU write "funny" under those conditions? 😉

I had stumbled across this show by accident and I never knew that this show was on back then. It is probably because I rarely watched Mary Tyler Moore after that, so this us the first time I saw this "reunion show!"
Except for the the sound being out of sync (can't figure out why!) the writers did a top notch job in recreating the original show and Dick and Mary stepped back in through time to flawlessly recreate theur parts if Rob and Laura Petrie too. I am really impressed, but what ruined it was the sound synchronization!s. But I wish I had seen it back in 1979...when I was

He recalled, "I knew my limitations, but this really brought them home. You know, it was, 'You're not a singer. You're not a dancer. You're not an actor. Get out of here. What are you doing? MTM was too late for variety shows. They were nearly dead by this time.

No, it doesn't look like the same, exact, set.

What would you say is different? (I am only referring to the Petrie House set)

    • @jf9488
      @jf9488 7 ปีที่แล้ว

SafetySpooon the back wall isn't the same and the wall with the fireplace and the fireplace, itself, isn't the same. Even during T.D.V.S. the set changed over time. The kitchen stayed the same, I believe, during the run of the show.

two fantastically talented stars-- and a turkey of a show. Did every writer in Hollywood die that year? Or was this a plot perpetrated by Mary and Dick's enemies? Freakin sad. I can't even watch the rest.

It definitely was missing Carl Reiner's midas touch. But I think they just let the writers of the day do it in their own way. And she was completely in Mary Richards mode as opposed to Laura. tbh I figured today's culture would have loved this skit - right down to role reversal!

@@invisiblesun6595 Okay, I'll just say it, the unthinkable: Mary had no sense of quality. She made two sitcoms after her hour show folded; both were DOA for being bad. Mary, whom I regard as one of our finest actresses, needed a Jim Brooks or a Carl Reiner to provide her with material. Somebody needed to have a sense of humor.

Mary/Laura has the same bee-hive from the 60's....and Richie has to be gay? They wouldn't have thought that hearing aids would be wireless!

That's not a beehive, it's a flip. A beehive has all the hair piled up in a cone-shape like a traditional beehive.

Amazing, isn't it. Lots of people are. Gay, that is. People you know, people you don't know. Gay has been around since the dawn of mankind, for 35,000 years, so I'm surprised it still has the power to shock people like you. Maybe it's time to get over it.
