I came here because I was looking for other covers of the song as interpreted by Elvis in 1977....this interpretation is - I must admit - among the best I heard; and thanks to those commenting that Elton liked country music including Hank Williams

Wow I'm blown away! First time hearing this Jim Reeves classic by Elton,he did indeed nail it Never knew he covered it . As someone said he used to do this in bars ,cool. I shouldn't be surprised, he liked Hank Williams as well and even named one of his song Cold Cold Heart after Hank's own song !
Noone but Elton John could do real justice to this song. I love how Elton made the song his own...instead of sounding like Jim Reeves. Well done Sir Elton.
Also have a listen to Elvis’s version. It’s the last song he recorded … It’s a beautiful song, and Jim Reeves was the first version I ever heard. I was very pleased to discover this by Elton….lovely.
I have to say, I have been a Fan of Elton since 1972 (Yea I am old) BUT I NEVER heard this. Just Amazing for Elton to do a Jim Reeves song and did it well Mind you. I have seen Elton Properly a Dozen times over the past 50 years but he NEVER did this 1 Live. Thank you for Posting
Fuck all y'all this was Elton's best days period... his voice was better after surgery than in the 70s when he was less experienced... now he has a mature and sexy voice and plays piano probably better too... plus the Roland RD 1000 he's playing on here is an INCREDIBLE instrument he used in that era... he still mimicks that sound with his modern day grand pianos.
I’ve listened to Jim Reeves, and Elvis, and Tom Jones sing their versions. Elton’s is better. What an accolade. Elton’s great music sometimes hides his great voice. What a vocal performance on this song. He puts everything into this song. Wow
I prefer renditions of this classic from Jim Reeves and Nat “King” Cole. However, Elton still did the song justice. It doesn’t matter that he’s British or a homosexual, he sang from the heart and that is what matters. 😉
1 Put your sweet lips a little closer to the phone. Let's pretend that we're together, all alone. I'll tell the man to turn the juke box way down low, And you can tell your friend there with you he'll have to go. Whisper to me, tell me do you love me true, Or is he holding you the way I do? Tho' love is blind, make up your mind, I've got to know, Should I hang up, or will you tell him he'll have to go? IMO this song requires a vulnerability which EJ nails in the beginning but sadly abandons in the end. I’ll stick with Elvis’ version. EP has a better voice anyway. 🤷♂️
Do Jima Reevesa to kosmicznie mu daleko z tym głosem. Piosenka zepsuta tym wykonaniem. Może komuś się to podoba. Wszystko można zaśpiewać ale brak głosu aksamitnego Jima psuje to wykonanie. Całkowicie brak wyczucia się w tą melodię. 😟
Guys from England will never understand country music...even though it is the music of their own folks. English boys do great singin the blues. Country? They just cant do it.

I heard this was one of the first songs that Elton learned to sing. I think it's great to see that he has not forgotten where he came from.
Wow didn't know Elton sang this. Nice rendition of it. Thanks for sharing. 🎶❤️
You have to see elton sang it in moscow 1979
Love this song, will always remind me of my dad, he used to sing it late at night when he had a night on the beer!!
So sweet. Elton can sing and play anything and it will still be amazing!!

Elton used to play this song in the pubs when he was a kid! Great to hear him do it now!

Yeah I know he loves Jim Reeves, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Tammy Wynette.
@@actownsend7288 He really loved American Rhythm and Blues and the hits from the Brill Building writers as well.
Fantastic version Elton. 👌
Fantastic version - love it....
Wow!! Just wow!! He nailed this song

Love this version of the great Jim Reeves classic 👌
Wow this is a great cover 👍👍👍👍
Pure talent❤
He played this in concert at Manchester on his Single Man tour 79.
Country soul as good as it gets
He played all of these songs growing up he should release a cd with things like this
Never boring listening this song❤️❤️❤️
Damn. .this is good

1:30 He really sounds like a southern American there
Retro Reginald amazing 😉
Retro Reginald uhh no. Maybe a Texas drawl, but definitely not a southern accent.
from Texas can confirm ! he sounds a lot like a Tex-Mex singer or Tejano singer :) here that style a lot where i live !
Blue eyed soul
Very nice! ☮️🖖🏽
GENIO TOTAL!!!!!!
I love the RD-1000
Andrew Piatek what's that
That's the keyboard he's playing.
ME TOO IT IS SUCH A VERSATILE, SEXY KEYBOARD
amo essa musica!!!
This version & the Frankie miller are sum off the best I've heard (I'd have to put the FRANKIE MILLER version 1st
With American accent :)
I've heard the original from Jim Reeves but I like Elton's version a lot more.
If this was done in the 1986 era there probably would have been more comments about the rough vocal.
the second half of 1986, first half of 1986 carried on the great 1985 voice.
It sounds as though his voice is still recovering from his 1987 surgery.
If only he put this on a cd!
RESPECT
Funny I wore an awesome hat like that to church today!!! Not the jacket though. I live in sunny FL
This piano playing reminds me of Jimmy Swaggart......wait this is when Jimmy Swaggart was huge omg. Especially 2:20-2:35.
YES! I love Jimmy Swaggart!
What a compliment to Elton John! Swaggart is amazing on those keys!! But then so is Elton.
Jimmy Swaggart !!!!! You are kidding right
I cannot believe you commented with what I was thinking watching a old Jimmy replay on TV I said that is a influence Elton had
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
He lamented once "why couldn't I have written he'll have to go"

Is the quality of sound as good as original or it has been compressed?
Compressed

Nice version of this classic. For those who care, Prefab Sprout do a somewhat different, but interesting take on the song.
Only one take on this song -------- no ray Charles no version
He didn't take his wedding ring off
He divorced in November 1988 so he still was married most that year
Cuando Elthon cantaba covers.
This song must have drawn a stroke in our life history
dont u just love it when someone as good as elton sings a jim reeves song....just as if george micheal would
With the dark rimmed glasses and hat he lookes like Truman Capote.

Pena ter uma voz fraca … sabe pôr emoção mas sou das velhotas dos anos 60 ! Não há qualquer comparação com as grandes vozes dessa década
He got some of his notes wrong on the piano no matter how brilliant he is he's just human like anyone else 😊
Wonder if he played this song in the pubs.
I think he said before he played it in 1992 that he did, not sure though.
Which ones ? I challenge you

Listen to frankie millers cover , far much better than this
Meglio Elvis
Why did this guy ruin that song ridiculous
Rubbish, not a patch on Jim Reeves,he is just a guy like any other who will sing at a party not bad on the piano tho.
Great cover. But Jerry Lee takes this one.

Yep, Jim would be rolling in his grave!
