It's been 42 years since John Lennon left us ... even 42 years from now, future generations will still feel the sting of that fateful day on Dec 8, 1980. Thank you Elton John & Bernie Taupin, for composing such a great song in Lennon's honor and memory.
They may not feel it as directly as those who were alive and remember that day, but somewhere in the fabric of humanity, the absence of all the music and the joy that were taken away from us will echo through time.

My favorite period was 1979. His range was absolutely incredible, to get a taste, watch his Moscow concerts. I’m fairly sure he raised the key of Bennie and the Jets and pulled it of flawlessly.
His lifelong musical collaborator Bernie Taupin produced most of the lyrics while Elton created the music (chords and harmony, etc.). A very great partnership that has benefited us all.
I haven't listened to this song in years and coming back to it today, I'm struck by the power of the music and lyrics and how much more resonant they are to me now that John has been gone for so long. All the music and the joy that were taken away from us will echo through time.

Massive thanks and praise to Master lyricist Bernie Taupin for this and countless other EJ collaborations which would not have been nearly as epic as this brilliant piece and most other elton songs, were their talent not paired. A loving, philanthrophic man, environmentally aware; a multi-skilled artist in other genres, Very active. Would love to know such a man. Was at the 2 concerts in Cardiff that year, brilliant concerts, his voice was brill, I even shook hands with the late great Dee Murray then as well during 1 of the concerts, brings back great memories.

I saw him that year in Kansas City. July of 82 what a great show. There is a guy online that is selling the concerts on cd. The night i was there, they broadcast the concert live across the old Westwood One Radio network. i paid 12.50 for my concert ticket. I paid 40 bucks to buy that same concert on cd. This song reminds me of my late older brother. Always brings tears to my eyes.

He was at his peak vocally from '82 to '86 or so, and then after Australia and his vocal operation he couldn't hit the high notes. But in some cases, that actually WORKED on some of his songs (Lion King hits in '94 and some songs on Big Picture '97).

The very first time I heard this song, I cried like a baby! Absolutely beautiful tribute to John Lennon.
Such a beautiful, sad song. Hard not to cry when you hear it. John Lennon is still my favorite singer/songwriter of all time.
