How did the wool mat work? Is it easy to use a mouse on, and how hard is it to write on it? Also nervous that I am going to spill something on it and ruin it. It looks great tho, and I'm thinking about ordering one.

Nice video. I'm glad I found a channel that covers this kind of stuff from a workspace design perspective.
I wouldn't recommend fake leather desk mats, though. In my experience you eventually get a lot of drag on your wrist after you've had one for a while. So you end up turning your wrist instead of moving your forearm, which can cause a bunch of problems for you.
I love the look of those wool ones, but I'd bet they pick up pet fur like crazy, which is a bummer.

I want to get one of those dark gray wool mouse pads but I bought a felt pad for my desk years ago and my mouse was constantly snagging the fibers as it moved and it felt awful. I don't know if that would be a problem on these kinds of products.

Thank you for the video, it will really help in deciding which mat to get. I have a question - are there any unpleasant smells that come with any of these mats? I am asking because I first bought a mat from Ikea, which was quite fine as a surface to work on, but since it is made from some synthetic material, it came with a very unpleasant smell of rubber or tar, which no amount of airing or washing could remove. I am leaning towards the Grovemade's Matte one (if I can order it in my country), so this question relates especially to that one. Thanks

If you actually want to buy a good quality desk mat just talk to somebody from the custom keyboard community because they basically invented the modern desk pad. Leather or suede or other "fancy" or "unique" materials should not be used as a main desk pad or mousepad because of their very poor ergonomic function. In short, people think they look cool and trendy and sure they might but they will only be comfortable to write on compared to actual desk pads that can be used to comfortably use your keyboard and mouse on. So many people have amazing minimal setups and they think that one of these desk mats will add to the aesthetic but to people who are knowledgeable about these mats the setup can be basically be ruined by this one factor, there are many better alternatives for around the same price point with many different looks you just have to do better research and testing.

@@itsklushi4838 Steller point, I feel like creators like him try to focus too much on one specific aesthetic, and its expensive aesthetic. Certainly, he is kind of similar to a lot of other TH-camrs cause of that. Don't get me wrong I still love his content, but he should take in factor ergonomics and etc. which enhances a setup a lot just like these do. Also, these Desk pads aren't exclusive to the mechanical keyboard community, they are for everyone.

I don’t think the price difference necessarily “adds” to the experience. It’s just a very different experience. The leather feels really nice but the matte is much more functional. Looks wise, the matte has a cleaner look. Unless you’re up close and actually feeling the leather, it can look a bit off because of the imperfections.

I've owned a few desk mats, but they seem to all be very absorbent in terms of dirt and especially sweat, which is a problem as it gets very hot here in summer. Most of these are easily washable, but frankly I don't want to take my desk mat to the bathtub to properly soak and scrub it.
Which material do you think would be best to counter this problem? I don't really care about hardness or anything as I'm fine with just using my wooden surface anyway, just looking for something that doesn't absorb everything and I can just wipe down with a damp cloth every once in a while.
