    I've been playing music for nearly 20 years now and this is the first time I've found myself in a position where I don't have a dedicated rehearsal space to play at full volume. There is so much you can do at home with a laptop now, so I'm excited to try it out - your video was really helpful for showing me where to start.

    I've been using the same interface and Reaper for a year and a half. This video is the best instructional you can find as a home recording guitarist. As for guitar tones, I've been using Guitar Rig 5 as well, then moved to Amplitube 4 which I highly recommend. Each software has its own learning curve so give yourself some time. I've also played on multi FX units, analogue pedals and half stacks back in the days. But the current setup suits me better.

    Actually many pedals can be used as an interface now. I started out with a guitar into a digitech pedal with amp and cab simulators into the microphone input on a pc. Many will connect directly to computers with USB cables. Didn't sound the best and I was stuck with whatever sound was going in, but it can still be done.

    Very nice video. I know this is frowned upon in some circles, but I've been happy in the past just using a USB to quarter inch guitar cable and plugging the guitar straight into the computer. Can pick one up pretty cheap anywhere. I honestly couldn't tell much of a difference through that and through a scarlett 2i2... I guess it depends on your computer sound card but sounds fine on a 2014 Mac Pro.

    You can indeed plug a guitar directly into a laptop. Get a cable with 1/8" or 3.5mm male on one end and a 1/4" or 6.35mm male on the other. Your DAW should recognize the guitar plugged into the mic jack. If you cannot hear it, try selecting the "monitor" option for the mic input. An acoustic electric works best, but I have recorded an electric this way as well.

    • @MusicRepo
      @MusicRepo  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This doesn't work (or doesn't for me) if you have a combined headphone and mic input. If you have separate mic and headphone port then yes you can do this. I have tried experimenting with a TRRS to mic and headphone splitter cable to, but the quality is pretty grim. Thanks for your input though, because it may work for others .... maybe it's just my macbook that won't play nice

    You’re a rockin’ wee bonnie lass! I needed a good reminder on how the whole chain worked. I already have an old SM57, an m-audio fast track pro, Yamaha monitors and cables, amps & guitars. But I haven’t used the recording equipment for a long time. I already have band in a box and I downloaded a couple of effects programs and I’m still deciding which DAW I’ll stick with. But I saw the analog version of irig2 on sale and I was wondering if I could use that. I’ve got a bad case of GAS (gear acquisition syndrome.) but I don’t really need it because, like you show in your video, I can go straight from the guitar into the audio interface or I can mic my amp. I’ll probably do both of those ways and either get a familiar sound from my amp or take it into the DAW and work with Amplitube. I’m hoping that I like the sounds of some of those cool amps. Thanks for the great video!
