.... and it makes the property in compliance with the law. In almost every community in the western world, it is the responsibility of the property owner to maintain the public walkways on his land free and clear of obstacles, as well as in a state of good repair.
I don't think the dirt build up would be so bad if the area had a half-way decent drainage. You could tell it doesn't by see all the water accumulate at the neighbors driveway. The transformation was incredible and gave the house a rejuvenated look to it.
Just notice this as well. The drainage system who does that fall on the original homeowners or the city? Just curious. As I live in the southeast in Georgia and some places either have good drainage and some well...let just say there can be some DEEP puddles.
@@simplylifep2521 The City. Drainage systems are a complex network of ditches, run-offs, and retaining lakes that people with civil engineering degrees design. Not really much us homeowners can do to fix something that spans the entire area.
I wouldn't blame the home owner for the drainage. This was a defect of the property they probably did not design. The property has a fairly high grade above street level, but the sidewalk was clearly lower than the roadside boulevard. If it sunk, or it started that way, it was a failure by whoever installed the sidewalk. Probably the developer, but maybe the city built it; whoever probably tried to cut corners with the footing.
I was wondering how it could’ve gotten that bad! I was concerned like, our walkways have never been cleaned at all and they dont look that bad! Didn’t even think of drainage
This transformation is insane. Because of SB mowing, you've increased the property value, gave an outstanding curb appeal, and gave pedestrians a safe and clean walkway. 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
I am a gardener for the Parks Dept in a major city, I recommend getting yourself one of those all metal blade and handle flat tip shovel. We call them king spades and use them for removing dead tree stumps 6in and under. The blade on them is about 18+ inches long, so on jobs like that sidewalk, you can pry from under the soil/root with a LOT more leverage and save your arms and back a little :) And as a fellow landscape worker, you have my commiseration for having to deal with what looked like tree roots starting to work their way into that sod.
I was thinking the same thing and it would make it alot easier to be able to do the edges prior break it into small sections with our that much water usage.
If you're scraping with a shovel, get yourself a big flat shovel, like a heavy duty steel grain/snow shovel, theyre real wide but lightweight and tough. Sharpen the edge with a grinder. It'll take you like 30 seconds and saves you a ton of effort. Its also good for scraping vines off walls among other things, buy it in the summer when no one else wants a snow shovel and you'll get a good deal on it too.

What I don't understand is, how did nobody in the neighborhood or someone working for the city, in all the years it took for that to grow, never realize "Hey, shouldn't there be a sidewalk here?" Sidewalks don't just magically stop in front of one house, then start immediately after, except for rare circumstances. Hell in many cities, having a sidewalk on at least one side of the street through residential neighborhoods is the law! Keeps people from having to walk in the street where cars are being driven.

She has a beautiful house and well kept mowed lawn. I think she has a gardener service and they prob ignored the sidewalk 😅 I like this channel, this fellow does the work like it’s his house.
It can also be hard to know if it's the current resident's fault. Maybe she bought it with the sidewalk already covered in grass. At that point I wouldn't really expect her to know that a sidewalk was even there.
Spencer…love what you do! One request… when you do major SB mowing projects, and the sidewalks look like trash, follow them up with SB pressure washing projects! Love it!
I think with all the puddling up I saw that drainage is a major contributing factor to the dirt buildup here. Typically you'd expect the water to drain into the road and then down the sides into storm drains. Instead of just pooling up.
Yeah even in the before picture you can tell it's not draining properly, must be frustrating as the homeowner. I personally couldn't let my yard look like that even if I had to upkeep it every month or so. Glad he helped.

I do feel a little bad for how embarrassed the homeowner was over letting the sidewalks get to that point. I'm glad he was honest with her and pointed out that it IS hard work to keep walkways maintained. This is one of those things that can very easily become visual noise when there are so many other things in life to worry about, and it rarely feels good to have a total stranger point out that you've been neglecting something (even while offering to fix it). I wish there had been a little more reassurance in that regard, that it's easy to overlook the state of something unless you make it your business (sometimes literally) to do so. I'm hoping that the homeowner can be a little more at peace with herself now that it's been taken care of, and that the fresh start of a clean space will make it easier to maintain.
I know this is a little late but I thought it should be known for anyone who reads this and thinks it’s your job to take care of sidewalks. It’s not. It’s the cities job to take care of sidewalks, not homeowners. Sure, you can make sure you don’t dirty them yourself but things like overgrowth, flooding, etc is all up to the city.

You can kind of see why the side walk got covered up, the grass is sloped upwards, and you can see old wood border that got eroded so it couldn't hold the dirt back anymore. to keep this from happening again you would have to rebuild the wood border to stop the dirt from going over the sidewalk whenever the rainy season comes.
Or get a metal barrier instead of wood it will take a while for the metal to erode away.
Look at how the mud rises back onto the sidewalk and pools at the corner. No wonder grass can take over the sidewalk so easily

Man you just made the entire neighborhood look better. And her home now looks just wow.
Thank you!
Now their property taxes are gonna go up
The owner must be so grateful and the neighbours so jealous to see the final transformation! My back hurts just watching you work so hard. Well done!
she's all embarrassed and I'm sitting here admiring that spread of land she's got and how well maintained that yard is...
which is weird that whoever was taking care of her lawn let the sidewalks and walkways so overgrown
@@iMaxTb I was thinking the same thing. Like they just mowed & left the grass on the sidewalk. 🤦♀️
@@iMaxTb In a lot of these cases older people can't do edging so over the years it slowly grows over. I only edge my drive once a year and there's usually two or three inches lost by then. If I couldn't do the work it would just keep disappearing.
The cynic in me was thinking it’s some peoples way of gaining more land..(to let the sidewalk grow over)
Her yard was awesome!
I feel kinda bad for that lady. She was clearly embarrassed about the whole ordeal. Hopefully this can help her feel better about her home and just knowing people care and aren't upset :)
The city is actually responsible for sidewalks. She had reason to feel embarrassed. But im quite sure you are correct.
@@MrWonkawonka Where I live we are responsible for the sidewalk. It is our reasponsibility to keep it clear and usable. Usuallt this means snow and objects but I'm sure the grass and mud would fall on us too. The cite is only in charge or repairing it.
I don't think this guy just did it to promote his business on TH-cam regardless of what TH-cam provided that was one hell of a job where I live that would cost a few thousand at least. Goes to show you there are good people left in this world.
@@foxinasweater2300 ahhhh...
@@JS-ed2hg I would have done this for like 500 ☠️. I did a whole church compound for 2k w few years back. Market dried up and a I went to cars idk who's charging thousands I legitimately couldn't find business undercharging
At that point it’s probably not even her fault. If the grass is completely covering it like that that house has been there for a very long time
I know this is a little late but I thought it should be known for anyone who reads this and thinks it’s your job to take care of sidewalks. It’s not. It’s the cities job to take care of sidewalks, not homeowners. Sure, you can make sure you don’t dirty them yourself but things like overgrowth, flooding, etc is all up to the city. I hope that poor woman did NOT stress out over something that wasn’t her stress to begin with.
it's not her job to take care of the sidewalk...
@@skreezyi It wasn't his job either (only the driveway was, and for "free"), yet he still did it. Don't think to limit the positive outcome people can have in other people's lives.
@@ChaosSolak but it kinda is his job. This guy makes it his mission to do this stuff, and with over 14 million views in this 53 minute video, he might have done it free for the lady, but you can bet he's getting paid well. Not everyone else has the time, or ability to do what he's done. besides that, it is the city's responsibility to keep the sidewalk clean and safe.
Watching your videos is extremely satisfying. I open your channel each time i wanna relax. Thanks for making the world more appealing!
Aww! She was worried she was being judged for her yard. I’ve been there and I’ve had neighbors help me with my yard and you can’t help but feel judged even though I believe they were just being neighborly.
Sidewalks and bicycle lanes should be built out to the max, before public transit, and roads and highways should never be expanded.
You know the dirt has been there a long time when the people who live around there (possibly for multiple years to decades) don't even realize it themselves that there was a sidewalk there
That Bermuda grass grows really fast. If you're not constantly trimming and edging it very quickly takes over. It probably took only a few years to cover the sidewalk.
@@simonmoore6823 I blame the guy who cuts the lawn, he stopped doing the edging.
Awe, the way she took the time to know you after your deed and offered to tip/pay, that was very sweet of her.
Right. We don't know her, but a lot of people have physical problems we can't see like heart problems or chronic pain or debilitating depression. Even so, while I am able to mow my lawn, some of the jobs the mowing channels do are massive, taking one or two strong men with experience and the proper mower and tools one or two days. Not many 60+ people can do that much even if fairly healthy.
SB and others, you sure have patience and a charitable work ethic to work that hard to get the job completely done.
@@carolg.6838 yeah, I have spinal issues but after I had surgery I look normal but still have issues lifting and moving things. Without knowing me or telling people, my disability isn't visible
@@carolg.6838 Right- but the other side of that coin is some people are just plain ass lazy and don't even care about their grass, weeds and landscape. They wont do it themselves or even pay someone to get it done. I know this for a fact... I have a couple neighbors that could care less about their grass or anything...(lazy bastards). And they are much younger and able to do physical work. Look if someone cant physically do that stuff, then get a condo or an apartment so they don't have to. Don't bring the neighborhood down to their level period.
She was so sweet! I talked to her for quite a bit off camera
@@michaelgabriel67 You're right, we should segregate people based on their physical ability. I'll get you a mustache grooming kit for Christmas!
can't believe someone did a full video like this for youtube and I and other people watching this. You are really good at this exercise !
Your videos are so inspirational! Bless your heart.
Thank you so much!
The world needs more people like this guy
Agreed.... So far I seen two other TH-cam channels one based in UK and the other stateside
Hes amazing
At first I thought he was pulling out sidewalk plates when I saw it from intro. Was so confused why would he do that lol.
If I had money to buy a pressure washer I would do this but I'm only 14 and therefore that means I cant get a job
@@Pickle_rick_nick you can do yard work for people in your neighborhood normally (if you live in one ofc)

This lady should have her own TH-cam channel. A lot of people can get grass OFF a walkway but how many can grow thick, even, healthy grass ON a walkway!?!
The *jealousy.* I'd love to take that grass from her sidewalk because I can't grow it in my *dirt.*

For real
This video is a great way to illustrate how buildings and roads get gradually buried over time.
You're contributing to educational resources, and I am so appreciative of your efforts and hard work that allows it.
Well done, mate.
Good job 👍
That’s why you pay taxes to the city. So they can gradual avoid it with preventive measures they obviously didn’t do here.
Looks like someone sodded that.
Nah someone did that on purpose
The great thing about doing this is any other homeowners out there watching him from their houses can always walk up to him and ask him if he could do their driveway, but of course for a fee… It’s just like when I’m out with the guys doing tree work neighbors are always watching and there’s always one or two that walks up and wants us to take a look at their yard because there’s always a tree that needs to be removed. 😅
I had a new roof installed last year. My roofer got 3 more jobs in my subdivision just from the walk-ups.
It’s so true! Good business sense to do this!
Yes! Anyone my neighbor hires, I also hire! I live in an old house so I’m constantly doing repairs and will always walk up to my neighbors workers and ask for a card…. 90% of the time they will get hired. And then my neighbors do the same thing to my guys that I hire!
@@RosaX305 I’m a residential house painter and 90% of our jobs come from exactly this. There’s usually one neighbor that comes and asks for a card and sees we’re doing good work, at the end of every job we ask every client to please spread the word to anyone who is in need of painting. Works like a charm.
Depends on the type of neighbor tho. If 'karen' type get to know he did it fir this homeowner for free, he/she will absolutely karenized her way to get him do it for their home for free too
WOW!!! Mr. Spencer I came across your video on TH-cam where you called this man and ask if you could cut his grass. As I watched you cutting, trimming, edging this lawn I was amazed at the transformation. So I had to subscribe and watched another video of you finding the sidewalk at this women house. You did a beautiful job. I do wonder why you don't wear a mask while mowing. I will continue to watch and go back to watch older videos. Thank you for all you are doing for others. Be well. Miss Ethel.🙏👍
