  • This is Ollie from History Profiles, and this video will be about Godfrey of Bouillon. Born as the second son to the Count of Boulogne, he would have to forge his own fate in order to be recognized and remembered by history. This is his story.

Fortunate indeed or he would not be on top of the food chain as he is, with so much practice killing himself.

Perhaps the infidels would be spared if they had not stood on the walls, mocking the Cross and the Crusaders until they breached the walls. It was years of pent up fear and frustration that suddenly got released in an uncontrollable fury. They had been starving to death, reduced to cannibalism, thirsting, being forced to carry water from miles away in the stomachs of dead horses, more then once been faced with certain death. Even the Christians in Jerusalem was terrified by their brethren and the only thing that saved them from certain death was to cry out "Kyrie Eleison!" and make the sign of the cross.

Like a BBC documentary. What a great story. What a humble man. People tend to judge ppl of the past for their deeds and ignorance to these types of causes but when I read or hear how committed, courageous and honorable men and women throughout history were, with limited comforts, information and technology, it makes me realize how trivial 21st century problems are.

I am so interested in all to do about the crusades and the middle ages in Europe and how more advanced they were in the Muslims world . I have been to Jerusalem and to many of the Templers castles on the Mediterranean. Thanks for such detailed stories.

Also muslims started fighting the byzantines and the byzantine emperor called the west for help. And, Jerusalem was the holy city, lot of Christian pilgrims use to go there. But since the muslim conquest of the city the roads werent safe for the pilgrims. They used to get Killed easily. First the Christians created an order called hospitaliers Who used to protect those pilgrims but It wasnt enough so the crusades started. Its not about which religión is better. Its not that simple. There are quite more complex reasons behind It

Well considering Jerusalem was eventually and finally taken in 1917 by a theoretical descendant of Richard, I’d say the Christians have that one sewn up in the end.
