A First Look At Ubuntu Unity 22.04 (Yes, Unity Lives!)

  • Even though I've never been a "desktop environment" user, I'm often asked which desktop environment is my favorite? Well, if I had to choose one that I thought fit my workflow the best, it would be the old Unity Desktop. And despite Ubuntu dropping Unity a few years ago, Unity still sees some development. And there is even an Ubuntu Unity flavor. Let's take a look!

    The Unity DE is like Windows 7. The desktop looks so timeless and still stands to this day as one of the greatest desktops of all time.

    • @poudink5791
      @poudink5791 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      No. You use Unity if you want a good or at the very least decent Desktop Environment. You use WIndows 7 if you want an obsolote, insecure and unsupported operating system. Windows 7 also hardly looks timeless. Skeumorphism is dead, and while there are many differing opinions on whether that's a good or bad thing, it remains that being skeumorphic makes you look dated.

      I have to use Windows for my work all day. I've had to get an Ergonomic mouse because moving my arm (right handed) over to the right to close, minimise or maximise the window just causes me so much pain and discomfort. My elbow comes into my body, whilst my arm bends outwards to the left in an unnatural way. I've learnt to move my entire arm, not just my wrist, which makes it even more tiresome, whereby moving my arm inwards is comfortable.

    I loved Unity when it was the stock UI for Ubuntu. Thanks for doing this review! I never quite understood why the Unity desktop seemed to upset more "hardcore" Linux users. But, I always loved it. Because of this video, I just installed it on my Ubuntu 20.04 LTS load and it runs just fine. I think there must be something going on with your video drivers to make it so that you can't get the tweak tool to make certain changes. It's working perfectly on my little Dell laptop. All the transparencies work as they should. The icons are able to be resized appropriately. One of the things I really enjoy about Linux is the ability for customization. Freedom is great!

    I'm very pleased that this is available, but not because I was really motivated to use it myself. There was such an outpouring of disappointment and sadness when Canonical killed it that I had hoped someone would fork it and let it live on for those who had lost something they were fond of and found useful. That's one of the joys of proper software, that the licensing accommodates this possibility.

    The old File, Edit, View menu also traditionally used to be in the top left. Now Chrome screwed that up by putting it all the way up to the right under one stupid catch-all button, then Mozilla ripped off Google's bad design in Firefox (as usual), and so have many GNOME applications IIRC. I think even some KDE applications are doing it. IMO we're going backwards in GUI design... I prefer the old File/Edit/View menu system. Back before Google screwed it all up by trying to cram everything under one menu button, eliminate screen space that could otherwise be used for extra functionality, hiding/removing features, and generally just dumbing down the UI.

    • @robsku1
      @robsku1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, FireFox still includes the old-style menubar if you just enable it. It's actually there even if you don't enable it, tap left alt-key once and it will appear - choose View->Toolbars->Menu Bar to make it stay visible. On my old netbook having it hidden and only accessing it when the single stupid catch-all button doesn't have what I'm looking for is a good thing because of the low vertical resolution of the screen - what mozilla did was enable you to have which way you want, which I find better than being forced to just one way of doing things.

    I never understood why Unity got so much hate from Linux users. It wasn't something I used much but I did give it extensive testing and it wasn't perfect but still something great for first-time Linux users.
    It's impressive how a 12-year old kid was able to keep Unity alive and up-to-date. I guess no one is pining to bring back the Win 3.1 desktop. I got rid it that desktop using a great third-party program called "Calmira". It actually looked identical to the Win95 desktop but had extra useful features that were even better than Microsoft's iteration. Not surprising to see someone improve on software made by Microsoft though. Lol! 😆

    If you're concerned with the window controls being on the left side for reducing mouse movement, you cannot be for a top menu at the same time. If the window is not fullscreen, and the menu is used by the mouse, it means that the mouse has to travel from the window to the screen, which is not the case when you have an in-window menu. Mac OS does not get everything right in terms of usability (actually, it gets more things wrong than a lot of people think).

    My favorite feature of unity is that all the menus are automatically integrated into the top panel, and that when maximizing, windows are combined with this top panel - this makes most apps just so much more clean!
    I don't care how "macOS" it is, it just works, and it works well.
    The only notable fundamentally different design i've seen is how GNOME tries to omit app menus altogether, at least in their own apps.

    • @quarteratom
      @quarteratom 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it's stupid. Unintuitive.
      Some applications don't have menus. You have to hover over the top panel to look. You have to hover to see what's there. Sometimes you forget it's there and you don't find your options.
      It's detached from the window.
      If you want to save space, then move the top panel to the side. In this case combine it with the other panel. It really doesn't make sense to have 2 panels.
      It's just different from the standard Windows-style environment, just to different, and it loses function and usability in its hipstery.
      Windows (98...7) is the ultimate default standard normal desktop UI, if you change it, change its workings, if you don't have the functions, settings it had, then your distro is garbage.

Never liked it (or GMOME 3 for that matter) myself, but that those who do can still use it says a lot about the Linux/open-source ecosystem - sure, it's oversaturated with similar distros, but on the flip side there's something for absolutely everyone.

  • @MultiMattRogers

    I disagree about the window control buttons.
    for right handed people at least; the lowest effort, most comfortable direction to move your mouse up and to the right. wheras movements going to left are what puts strain on your wrist.
    I really enjoyed unity too, but I was always trading off the slightly suboptimal window control location against the other benefits, such as that brilliant feature where window decorations disappeared into the topbar giving you a true full screen application experience without obscuring any of your OS control. I loved that.
    GNome, elementary. etc. alwats feel like a step backwards where there's 2 bars at the top of my screen wasting space.

    • @chrisraven7629
      @chrisraven7629 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When moving your mouse to the left as a Right Handed user, your elbow moves outwards and your wrist and arm move inwards, which is natural. Moving it to the Right side causes you to bring your elbow into your body, and your arm to move outwards in a way that is not natural. Whilst this may not be the same for all users, logically speaking if everything is on the left side already, having the buttons there as well is best practice. In Western Culture we read from top left to bottom right so logically having the buttons on the left is where most people would be most comfortable.
      That being said, It should be customizable according to the user.

    • @MultiMattRogers
      @MultiMattRogers 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chrisraven7629 ah, we're talking about slightly different movements.
      I'd gone for the worst case scenario for strain where you were moving exclusively at the wrist as opposed to engaging the whole arm, in which case I have always found that I feel more strain when rotating my wrist inward toward the thumb, than outward toward the pinky. Although I accept they may be particular to me.

      @@LowSpecLinuxLaptop I don't know what applications you've been using but as a rule I've found that rarely used UI elements like file functions, or controls which are duplicated with ubiquitous key combinations tend to sit on the left, whilst the main body of the working space is either in the centre or on the right.
      Look at Photoshop, look at pretty much any video editor, look at blender, look at Microsoft frickin word... They all place core functionality on the right.
      Even Chrome really. That hamburger menu, that user profile, those quick links to Google webapps, they all sit over on the right.
      In fact the back button is literally the only thing on the left.

    This is still hands down the best desktop environment, while I absolutely love KDE and Budgie, Unity makes great in terms of vertical space, though this has been fixed with Dash to Dock now a days. However, I think if you are doing thing like programming and word editing, it's fantastic, I am only using 3gb of memory which is about as much as my Gnome desktop and Pantheon desktop uses. The problem though is that interacting with other gnome desktops can cause it to bug out, but if you are able to change the background it's fine.

    17:50-20:08 It's probably common for Microsoft Windows users to expect the window gadgets to be in the top-right corner. It seems that Microsoft Windows still insist this be the case. It's nice that in most Linux DE configuration tools, you can change this.
    28:37 Most Desktop Environments are RAM hungry, as DT probably has explained many times before by now.

    Hey DT, I've been a Windows user all my life, I've used Linux in the past and really enjoy they over idea of a free and open source operating system, but I'm still afraid of making the switch because there are so many good Distro's out there and all of them have good and bad stuff in them. The only Distro I would like 99% would be Linux Mint XFCE, but the DE doesn't receive as much love by the developers as the other DE's. What would you recommend?

      If you're fine with snaps, would Xubuntu be an option?
      edit:
      I found that once I stopped thinking about what distro to use, the switch was actually quite easy (for standart tasks). Sorry, not sure if it helps but just wamt to say: You should just try the awitch with something! We get so obsessed with trying the BEST distro and desktop that we forget that we should actually just try it (by plunging into it head first ... - maybe not with a wok computer though hahaha)

    Since most languages are LTR, having it on the left makes sense, though it'd be interesting if you could set it to the right for RTL languages users.

    The worst thing with this DE was lack of customisation options. Dock on the left is the worst option for me - in Windows I always keep it on the right side or on top. So this is the big reason why I was never ever considering to use this DE (and no, I don't want to use Cairo or other substitutes).

    I disagree with the idea that the window decs should be on the left. Doing so makes it more likely that you will accidentally close your window. Also, if you want to save your mousing wrist, it would be far more productive to increase the mouse pointer travel sensitivity, so you don't have to move your wrist as much in general, not just for manipulating windows. I mostly use my fingers to move my mouse, not my wrist, so my wrists are fine after many years of mousing.
