I worked for a large Air Ambulance company in the US. We frequently flew abroad and brought people back to the States. We were staffed with an RN and Paramedic on every flight. Going to Mexico was often a rescue mission. The horror stories are real.

My grandmother got a really bad GI Bleed when we were in Japan. She had travel insurance with American Express and let me tell you, 100% worth it and they took great care of all of us. They decided my grandmother could fly commercial home after a week in a Tokyo hospital. They up graded all of us to business class so she could lay down and flew a RN over to fly back with her from Tokyo to Dallas. Will never travel without insurance!

Scooter's in Mexico=bad idea. Passport & travel insurance=good idea. I'll never forget a news story 15-20 years ago, where a man drove his family from San Diego down the Mexican Baha coast to the beach. He missed a road, did a u-turn, hit a Mexican Consulate. The man (father) was really hurt, but the Consulate, not so much. He was taken to a hospital, and they kept asking for cash money, which the family continued to pour in the cash, finally getting up to about $50K. An American ambulance came and was literally outside his window ready to take him to San Diego. They wouldn't release him until it was too late. No care, he just laid there and died after I think weeks of this crap. He left a wife and 2 sons. I can't find the article, but it made me put Mexico under the microscope for travel.....

Anyone realizes when you go on excursions you are taking a chance and it’s all on you. Many excursions are wonderful but use your eyes and brain and if you feel something isn’t up to par pass it up!!!
Other countries hospitals and doctors are not the same as in the US and people in the US need to realize this and no amount of thinking it should be different will change that. I can’t imagine anyone traveling without your passport or needed paperwork. Even if you have great insurance while in other countries don’t expect it to step in and save you, often you have to pay up front and then recover your expenses. We here in America have a wonderful life and often don’t realize until we get involved in a situation in another country. Sorry but most people in lots of other countries think everyone in the US is wealthy and often they will take advantage of these thoughts. I have traveled a lot and my husband is from South America so I am familiar with how lucky we are in the US.

I ended up in the (non-local/tourist) emergency room in Playa del Carmen from an allergic reaction. I had travel insurance plus private insurance. The doctor would not do anything until I gave them my credit card. They charged $1,000 on my card. Once the charges went through, the doctor gave me meds and an IV drip. When I left the emergency room, the total charge was $650. and my credit card was credited $350. I sent the hospital bill to the travel insurance company. They reimbursed me all charges minus a $50 deductible. Remember to keep all documents when you travel including airline and cruise receipts and clinic/hospital receipts because I had to send it all in. When you buy travel insurance, they become primary and then they will bill your private insurance for reimbursement. This all happens after you get your reimbursement from the travel insurance company so there is no waiting on your part. It was very easy to work with them. Everything was done online. I will always buy the travel insurance.

My coworker and a group of friends to Cabo San Lucas and 2 of her friends fell off a cliff. Broken leg, ribs, possible internal bleeding. Ambulance came and demanded $200 up front. They paid. Got to the hospital told them that they needed $5000 to run test. They didnt have travel insurance and they needed to be evacuated by plane for $35,000. The plane came after they airport closed so they could evact. They contemplated driving thru Baja Mexico to California but were warned it was too dangerous because of the gangs and cartel. They decided the beat thing to do was wait until Delta airline came back to Cabo and then fake it like nothing was wrong. Reason for faking it was they called thw airline and were told they could absolutely not get on the plane because it is a risk. They finally touched down in the first layover in the US and went to ER. These women were messed up and spent days in a Hospital in Dallas Texas. MORAL of this long post is get travel insurance.

This is truly a sad story. That can be prevented. We have Emergency Assistance Plus, known as EA+ offered through the American Legion. It costs around $225 a year for a family plan. It covers you here and abroad. It comes with a booklet that explains the services, including medical evacuation if needed. If you get it, I strongly suggest you pack the book with you. We also take travel insurance and pay for our cruises with a credit card that offers trip protection. Take a photo copy of your passport with you when you leave the ship. Like they say: All is well until something goes wrong. When budgeting for a vacation, factor in an additional 10-15% for insurance.

I almost missed the ship in Aruba because I’d been planning to take the public bus back, I was young broke, no credit card. Thank goodness the ship was waiting for an excursion that got delayed.. but I spent at least 30 minutes on that bus thinking we were stuck with no way to get home. I’m older now and know better, but how awful to think that people think it’s funny when someone finds themselves in that situation.

In 2016,one person was killed and 3 injured on a Royal Caribbean excursion in Jamaica. The van driver had been driving recklessly on the way back from Dunn’s River Falls and was broadsided in Falmouth near the cruise port. They had all asked the driver to slow down. The 8 surviving passengers sued Royal Caribbean. If the tours are booked through the cruise line, you have a better chance of recovering expenses. I have also noticed age restrictions on tours, particularly zip lines. One tour operator in Bermuda wasn’t accepting guests over 65 for just a 5 hour tour of the island sights, nothing dare devil. Thanks for reminding everyone how important it is to bring your passport, money and credit cards when getting off in a port. You never know when you might not be heading back to the ship.

@@sarahphillips295 That's EXACTLY the definition of "playing stupid games." It's incumbent upon every traveler to find out IN ADVANCE what the risks and requirements are for their travels. I get that they don't know. That's why there are books, radio, TV and this amazing invention called the internet. In addition, both their medical insurance and their credit card documents state EXACTLY the level of protection provided. If they don't bother with finding out this information, when something goes wrong, as it inevitably will, too bad. Oh, my goodness! Excellent info. I had no idea that the cruise ship excursions were only gauranteed to wait if you were late. I thought they were also thoroughly backed by the ship. Eye opening. We do always buy travel insurance. My husband and I both have used the medical facilities and Kaiser covered most of it, and the cruise picked up the tab for what Kaiser did not cover.

I guess that's why we old folk just take the bus on excursions, and rarely take chances in a foreign country. Despite that, we never travel without travel and medical insurance. And when going on excursions, it's best to always take your passport with you. This experience that family had, would put me off ever travelling again. Be safe out there. Thanks for the good advice, Don.

I was taught long ago to make a photocopy of my passport (the pages that have my photo and detailed info), and to keep this copy someplace separate from my original when traveling anywhere. This tip was mostly to avoid hassles if/when one's passport goes missing or is stolen, etc. Leave the original in your room safe & take the copy with you (or vice versa)...just in case of disasters like Don just described. It'll help lessen a bit of the godawful trouble those folks from Texas had.

My wife received excellent medical care in Mexico when she tripped and fell. Broken wrist and facial lacerations. We are very knowledgeable about travel insurance and knew that we would have to pay up front for the care. She's doing well. Here is where I learned something important though. The travel insurance required that we notify them first before going to the hospital. I kind of knew that, but in the heat of the moment, I didn't think about it. Filed the claim and they denied for that reason. I was able to recoup through my work provided insurance and through my limited coverage on my credit card.

As Canadians, we are used to travelling with our passports. *However* we have never thought of taking such an important document ashore with us at a port. As for medical fees and charges, we are always fully insured, including medical and evacuation, but have never had to use it. If we must pay $50,000 or more first and then be reimbursed later, I don't think we could possibly manage that.

Sally, are you aware Princess Cruises are paying full cash refunds on the wharf at Luggage Point due to Cruise being buggered with no Cairns, Port Douglas and Willis Island 🚢 They are very obliging as the main reason not only now a 4 day cruise departing at 9pm instead of 4pm, the main reason is 200 crew are Covid affected plus close contacts. Hence forth with personal knowledge the Main Restaurants are closed for breakfast and lunch and only Suites and Black Elite allowed in Bordeaux Dining as there simply can't cater for 2000 pax. The Horizon Buffet is your only place to eat. Princess are excellent and are going above and beyond but no one can beat Covid or the Weather conditions. Mickey passenger on last cruise 🚢
