As someone who was an Electrical Officer at sea for nine years, although not on passenger ships, I believe the ship did not run out of food because there wasn't enough food on board. It was because there was a fairly major failure of the refrigeration plant for the fresh/chilled/frozen food storage compartments, causing the contents to become unsafe to eat.
To cancel the cruise and only refund the passengers for the portion of un-cruised days is unreasonable. First thing I can think of is the insurance expenses passengers paid, plus the fees for changing airline tickets, extra hotel fees, etc. I would never book any cruise with this cruise lines. I do not trust them to put my vacation in their hands.
We were on that ship a few weeks after this. Believe you me I wish they had run out of food as it was absolutely awful. The same dishes day in day out no variety and very very bland. Will I cruise with TUI again that’ll be a no then 😮
TUI needs to fire their customer service department, refund the entire amount with additional credits. Though the smartest thing to have done is pay whatever costs were needed to get a resupply done at sea.
Was it the Moroccan Passage that never got to Morocco or Madeira? We were on that itinerary. Still had fun. Food held out for the duration, but certain wine, beer, liquor brands were unavailable as we remained at sea without port stops. 😱
@@annekirkpatrick7197 it was NCl Epic from Lisbon to NYC during Christmas. Everything was the same on the ship. Food, drinks etc etc. They are supposed to prepare for a scenario of no port stops. It's common sense

Think the Marella Discovery 2 had a technical failure of the main refrigeration room which meant the food stored in there was deemed not stored in a manner fit for consumption and they couldn't resupply. But do agree they should have bit the bullet and given a full refund to the passengers, but interestingly TUI cruises (of which Marella is a brand subsidiary) are a 50/50 venture betweein TUI A.G. and the Royal Caribbean Group, so maybe RCG should have flexed its muscles and told TUI cruises to give a full refund or maybe RCG doesn't really care too much about a gaining a trash reputation as the name on the ship is 'Marella' and not 'xxxx of the seas' ?
The overbooking is not due to a computer glitch, it is quite intentional. The cruise lines know that a certain number of passengers will cancel. Most of these will be at the final payment point, but a few will be later for various reasons. The cruise lines still want to sail with every available cabin sold because they make a lot of money from on board sales, excursions, etc. So even if they keep the fare from a late cancel, they make more money if they fill that cabin. So yes, when they have filled all the numbered cabins, they continue to sell gtys, intending to put those people into whatever cabins cancel. Every now and then, they get caught. Their algorithm doesn't work and they don't have the cancelations they expected...so they are stuck with overbooking. They handle it the same way the airlines do/did--by offering financial incentives for people to cancel. It should be noted that NOT all cruise lines overbook. What cruise lines SHOULD do if you cancel for an overbook deal is to refund not only your cruise fare, but over the airline costs for change fees or non-refundable canceled flights as well as covering the cost of the insurance if it cannot be moved to a different cruise (some private companies in the US allow the insurance date to be moved ONCE.). In other words, cover ALL the costs, not just the cruise fare.
I had an over booked cruse on a mini suite because P and O Australia had to change ships which had less mini suites. I got a full refund to voluntary downgrade to a balcony. It was an offer too good to refuse. We still had a great time.
I don't understand how you can overbook. It is simple, once everything is sold, that is it, you are full. Same for US airlines. Once all seats are sold, your seats are gone.
RCCL is getting to be like airlines. They overbook. The number of calculations was not within their projected numbers. As for the trip insurance. It can be used for being reimbursed for your airline ticket
I’m from England and if i were on the Tui cruise the first thing I would do is go to my credit card company. I don’t know if it is the same as in America. But if they cannot full fill their obligation then the credit card company should reimburse you and they will just take it back from Tui account.
If I ever go to Taiwan 🇹🇼, I want to check out a performance of the Taipei First Girls HS Honor Guard. 🎖 Spectacular rifle and swordsmanship demonstration. Similar to USMC silent drill team. Only they're HS students. They're amazing.
Tell me like something the freezers broke or something. But the reality was that you only ordered 1/2 the food before departure. I could see running out of shrimp on the last day (still unacceptable) but understandable if there was a shrimping convention on board.
I've seen menu changes because diners have deviated from the normal /usual variations of menu choices. Like no prime rib for the last two nights because there is no more. But that's running out of one or two items, not running out of .
Our ship had engine failure, and we sat on the high seas for a few hours while they did repairs. They couldn't serve refrigerated or cooked food but made sandwiches in the interim. We couldn't walk through the hallways, which were pitch black, and no toilets could flush. When they cancelled the captains lunch, which we'd been invited to, we knew it was serious. It was all part of the adventure. Sitting idle in the middle of the ocean, no engine sounds, no air-conditioning, no toilets, little food presented, we mainly relaxed on deck and waited.
Between running out of food, food poisoning, overbooking, pro-rated refunds, lousy customer service etc., I'm going on a cruise in May & I'm not too excited about it. This will be my third cruise & I'm seriously thinking it will be my last.
Sounds like the cruise company that ran out of food must have money problems that they weren’t able to procure enough food before cruising or there was a major supply chain issue.
This constitutes gross incompetence. They should have known that they didn’t have enough food before they left the port. That cruise should never have left the port. They should have gotten a full refund and a free cruise minimum. I would never use a cruise line again that treated me that way.
We cruised on her at the end of December. Such a nice ship! She just had a refurbishment and is sailing back to the U.S. Understandably, many cruisers will be frustrated.
That is good to hear. We are going on our first cruise on Explorer on 12 March. We had no idea it was being upgraded and deep cleaned. We are excited to see everything.
Honestly, I don't know how they didn't know this was going to come back at them with a BIG BITE! Now it's going to cost them (because I believe these passengers will win) more than if they had just given everyone 100% of their money back, plus credit, plus flying them back home (for real, not some drop off point). I'm dozens of cruises in, and this is the most ridiculous, outrageous reason I've ever heard of to cancel a cruise. And NO, THANK YOU! Don't bother giving out FCCs because these people will never cruise this line again!
Don. I don’t understand how a cruise is overbooked and your stateroom is selected at the time of booking unless it’s a guaranteed stateroom. Can see a guaranteed room being overbooked. In terms of Marella running out of food and flying ppl back wherever, agreed a full refund is deserved. 100% FCC would be nice but would be ok with 100% and proper transportation arrangements home to my original airport and city 🤦♀️. You were a ball of good news today Don 😂😂. Thanks for sharing and see you next video. 🛳️
That would’ve been really stressful to most people to have to go many many hours on a bus plus they’re having to pack midway through the cruise to go back home . You don’t always have snacks ready and drinks. And you usually aren’t very comfortable for a long bus trip.
I took my first cruise a few days ago, on the MSC Meraviglia. I was very underwhelmed. There wasn’t a lot of variety in the food, and the same items seemed to pop up day after day (I spent 2 days in my room after getting food poisoning. It was miserable!). I was surprised that so much space was given to hotdogs and hamburgers. I tried a hotdog. It was awful. Seemed very low quality meat. They ran out of ketchup, and though there was supposed to be iced tea, it appeared at only one of the drink stations, and only for a couple of hours before it was out also. The drinks were served in kiddie plastic glasses, very small. The drinks that were in abundance at the drink station seemed to be raspberry koolaid (way too sweet!), and a lemonade that seemed premixed as well. I stood in a long line one night to get a coke (I bought several (they were out of coke the first night) so I could take some back to my room. My minibar was locked.), and they added a service charge to the bill. Just a few dollars but the point is that I’m the one who stood in line and served myself! And I was told that a visit to the nurse (for the food poisoning) would cost $180. That was surprising, since it was their food that made me sick. I would guess that their Italian food (noodles, and pizza) was authentic, being an Italian cruise line. Well I’ve decided I definitely do not like Italian food anymore. The food stations would close randomly, and be roped off. That food disappeared in seconds! The impression I got from the buffet is that they were looking to do the minimum to meet their obligation. It felt like slopping the hogs (and strictly on a schedule). We have a cruise on another line to Alaska in a few months and honestly, I’m not even looking forward to it anymore.
Same here with my first cruise a few days ago on the MSC. the food was inconsistent and drink stations were diluted or empty. Yes, hot dogs and hamburgers were given to much range as a selection. Unfortunately, I became sick as well, which was uncomfortable to say the least. I'm sorry you got sick and spent to days in your room.
I forgot about how the roping off food stations like a magic trick, leaving less food available and freshness with remaining open food stations (of course my opinion).
Over booking is pretty normal in the travel industry - hotels, flights, cruises, etc.. It's a calculated risk because a certain percentage cancel or don't show up. It doesn't always work out.
Now they should pay up even more for the additional inconvenience of not doing the right thing from the beginning. Add on the lawyer fees and emotional pain and suffering.
How can something that is computerized get overbooked? I don't understand how airlines and cruises can overbook with the technology that we have today. Not very good for people who pay their money and then may not get all their money back. BAD BUSINESS.
@@maggiegarber246 this exactly. They want to leave full, so they overbook based on previous experience with cancellations. But it's coming round to bite them in the butt. The last flight I had out of Miami in January was TWELVE seats overbooked. They were trying to get people to agree to take another flight, but there was only one flight a day to my destination and an ice storm was coming in. So then they just started kicking people off the flight. It's not right.

I agree - they should have gotten a full refund! Sounds like they are having major financial problems though! That Wonder offer was amazing! Good for you!

My mum and I were on Wonder of the seas from Barcelona in Sept 2022 and they ran out of Savignon Blanc, one bar didn't have any white wine at all, I do feel however that we may have contributed more than others to the shortage so couldn't be too mad😁
My friends went on a small ship to a Alaska in the summer. The food was sparse and in question. They saw crew shopping in a port, they were hoping it was food but it was for trivia!
I could understand overbooking if the venue didn’t have reserved spots, but your cabin is assigned when you book. Unless the cabins they are overselling are the ones where the passenger lets the cruiseline pick. Even so, the room is booked.
How about Norwegian cutting 16 hours of port time from what was sold to customers for their "sustainability program" (ie- your money in their pockets) AFTER you've made final payment?
Is there an insurance expert out there? How do the cancellations work from the insurance point-of-view? Do the cruise companies get insurance money too, obviously? Are insurance companies paying passengers for cancelled cruises and paying for their extra flights? If not then that means insurance is only travel health insurance, but l am sure somewhere on the policy it states they will pay for unforeseen circunstances and travel 'disruptions?' Is that correct? Perhaps ONLY when the cruise company doesn't sort it, but they're insured too so they're not paying for refunds since the insurance companies cover that? So what is their problem? Anyone?
Most people make arrangements for time off work, travel, hotel etc when they book, so canceling like that completely ruins their chance of a vacation. Also, if I'm on a cruise, and they run out of food or something they can actually control, I for sure wouldn't be wanting to cruise with them again.
Oooh Royal Caribbean better not tell me the cruise is over booked when I took leave to go on the cruise 😡! I WORK and have a life! I do like they give you a free cruise and your money back to make it right but I would be mad because of the rescheduling. I also never heard of a cruise running out of food. I have asked that question in my head though 😅. “Like, yo what will happen if too many people over eats 🤔? Will we run out towards the end??” Seriously, all of this can be avoided because everything is computerized. It’s actually crazy hearing this!
I was SERIOUSLY considering splurging on taking my family on a cruise. Not anymore. We will get an Airbnb, and DRIVE where they have bottles of water, restaurants, grocery stores and freedom
Great video Don! What a contrast - Royal Caribbean is giving people great choices on refunds/other cruises/FCCs and TUI is stiffing its customers. I'm not surprised there is a class action lawsuit. Good way to insure those people never sail with you again.
We were on the anthem of the seas a few years ago when it had to turn around and returned to port about halfway through the cruise due to propulsion issues. Among the number of options available, we took the full refund and 100% value on another cruise at a later date. So basically we got 2 1/2 cruises for free.
Unfortunately the problem cruise ships being overbooked has to do with the deposit handling of the cabins. Because you're not just dealing with Royal Caribbean you're dealing with several travel agencies. Which leads to the main computer overbooking due to confirmation delays or mishandling usually on behalf of the travel agency. What's going to have to be done in the future is to require the deposit to have to be made with one company overseeing the deposit. Guaranteeing the booking placement hold. While also offering a standby class. Which would mean offering a cabin at a discounted rate booking it as a standby in the event that someone cancels. Which would not be guaranteed. Hence the discount booking. However it would guarantee that the money would be returned if there are no cabins available. This way a cruise line can ensure that the ship remains fully booked. And leaves room for adjustment. Airlines book tickets on standby. However cruise lines usually only book standby if the person resides near the port. So that airline tickets and other travel expenses don't have to be reimbursed or even be required.
Got the overbooked email for my October 2022, Navigator sailing. Chose to ignore the email because I couldn't reschedule (traveling with friends) and I got the cruise for "free" as a Casino comp. Never heard anything more. Just excited that RC is filling ships which means they are making money. I could happen because past algorithms say a certain % of people cancel and less people are canceling.
Why are your dms off? Cape carnival had medical emergency yesterday. I was on the msc and the magic returned before we left about 5. What gives? Probably a drunken spring breaker!

They're not over booking they're giving them to higher bidders.
Phooey on TUI!!!!!
Good Afternoon Don
I guess customers comes first has run out 😢
New Sub here. I can’t believe this, how awful it ran out of food and people were sent home the hard way….
I would be expected to be made whole for my cruise and my non-refundable airfare if they put me on land anywhere other than my final port on the scheduled date of arrival.
That cruise ship running out of food is definitely on the cruise ship company.
I agree - they should have gotten a full refund! Sounds like they are having major financial problems though! That Wonder offer was amazing! Good for you!
You’re right, they should get a full refund and a 100% FCC plus something additional for the inconvenience for travel back home. Thanks for all the info you give us, really enjoy and appreciate.
Don I like your videos and your presentation mostly because you give us a large portion of your contents and then you offer people who have not yet subscribed to please do so if they are enjoying your videos. 🙂
TUI is German based cruiseline. It is joint venture with Royal Caribbean and German Tourism Board.
Wow that’s awful
I've been on Oasis at full capacity with a lot of kids. Really not thrilling. I'd be all over the total cancellation and FCC.
The problem is people with kids have to cruise when school is out.
RCL oversold Rapsody last September out of Haifa. We took the deal. Also computer glitch
I agree with you. Full refund.
If not then that means insurance is only travel health insurance, but l am sure somewhere on the policy it states they will pay for unforeseen circunstances and travel 'disruptions?'
Is that correct? Perhaps ONLY when the cruise company doesn't sort it, but they're insured too so they're not paying for refunds since the insurance companies cover that? So what is their problem?
Anyone?
Sounds like the cruise line is in trouble!!!
Most people make arrangements for time off work, travel, hotel etc when they book, so canceling like that completely ruins their chance of a vacation. Also, if I'm on a cruise, and they run out of food or something they can actually control, I for sure wouldn't be wanting to cruise with them again.
And the cruise that ran out of food should explain to the passengers why it happened.
Sounds good Don i usually always agree w you anyway!
I was SERIOUSLY considering splurging on taking my family on a cruise. Not anymore. We will get an Airbnb, and DRIVE where they have bottles of water, restaurants, grocery stores and freedom
Full refund for TUI passengers plus monetary compensation to cover for flights and insurance would be in order.
Tuition should refund the entire cruise plus issue a credit
Great video Don! What a contrast - Royal Caribbean is giving people great choices on refunds/other cruises/FCCs and TUI is stiffing its customers. I'm not surprised there is a class action lawsuit. Good way to insure those people never sail with you again.
I’ve been on the explorer of the seas and it’s good but nothing at all like one of the new fancy ships
I’m with you Don. I would jump all over that offer for Wonder.
Yes, the cruise line should give them a full refund and more.
Makes me say nah baby nah on that line
Why are your dms off? Cape carnival had medical emergency yesterday. I was on the msc and the magic returned before we left about 5. What gives? Probably a drunken spring breaker!
The only thing I like about RCCL the the stock price.
That would make me so mad to run out of food
7000 passengers? The smaller ship offer is really outstanding
