    This is more of a question on what someone else did when they recovered or cloned my data. My original drive was starting to fail, so I had a computer shop save my data on an SSD. The system could no longer do a normal startup without the machine freezing so I attempted to do it in the recovery mode startup. The drive didn't show up as a bootable image but I figured it was because it wasn't formatted to do that. Now curious, I looked at it inside the disk utility. Strangely, I couldn't modify the drive at all so I gave up and bought a new internal SSD and manually reinstalled everything.
    Now that I have a working system, I've been attempting to get at the recovered data. However, when I plug it in and open the volume, it shows up as empty. No files, no applications, no mountable disk image. But when I open up disk utility, I can see that 1/2 of the drive is being utilized... so something is there? At first I thought it was because I'm running Mojave 10.14.6 and it was formatted with APFS. That's just barely skimming by as working OS. But that doesn't seem to be the problem because even when I plug it into my Mac pro at work, which is running the latest OS, it still shows up as empty.
    Should I try to mount it, restore, image from? And there are three levels to the container. Which one am I supposed to be messing with? I no longer need a system restoration, l'm just trying to retrieve the old files. I've been digging around for a solution for months but I can't find a similar situation. Tried the apple forums and tech communities on discord but no one has a clue. Are there any other resources out there I should be looking into? Any advice is appreciated 😞

    I have a 2015 air. I want to be able to swap the SSD for the faster NVMe type. I have the adapter to make new ssd fit old slot. but I seem to be only able to clone if I put new ssd inside the mac and boot from old ssd via usb, format new ssd with APFS (osx journaled don't work because mac won't see it if connected by usb), then power off, restart in recovery mode, select diskutil, select recover, then diskutil shows 2 HD'S Internal and 2 external. I assume one of each is the boot and other is the data. then during the copy diskutil changed the new ssd name to match the source clones name.

But the restoration to my external usb HDD did not work yet. At the very end of the process i got a warning message that something failed with the partitioning the ext. disk, and that the restoration was not succesful. The ext. disk was erased first. Maybe it is the system disk's APFS filesystem? Maybe i will give a try with an ordinary flash drive instead of the ext. HDD.

    Why is the new disk not bootable? When I insert a new disk in place of the old one - the computer gives information that this disk is not bootable, but when I leave the old disk in the computer and the new one in USB, when I start the computer and select which disk to load the system from, I select the new USB disk - then the system loads properly. Do I need to make changes to the BIOS or do something else to make the new disk bootable?

    Hey Teresa, after installing BigSur on my macbook with a clean install, using a usb bootable stick, with my standard apps i would like to create a disk image and use it to restore it if i want a clean install without having to install everything again. Is that possible with a bootable stick?

    • @morgonaut
      @morgonaut  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it's a good question, but because even known software developers of for example Carbon Copy Cloner have problems with Big Sur I would not give it much chances. But you can always try it yourself and then let people know

    Yeah! Unfortunately these steps are not correct!! The option to create an image from your current drive is actually grayed out according to the steps that she gave. You need to be in recovery mode for this to work. She never showed that!! Be careful of what you see on TH-cam. Everyone is a genious!🙄

      @@morgonaut That might be true on Intel-based Macs without T2 chip, M1-based Macs I am not so sure, but you can worst case use Time Machine (included preinstall) to backup EVERYTHING and restore from RecoveryOS (preinstalled-I think in NVRAM iBoot bios firmware interestingly)!
