    I just watched your spoked and mag wheel video. I was taught at a motorcycle school for mechanics that there is a major difference between the two types of wheels.
    That is how they carry the weight of the motorcycle. A cast wheel carries the weight between the bottom of the rim as it sits on the ground and the axle whereas a spoked wheel carries the weight between the top of the rim and the axle.
    Basically a cast wheel supports the axle and on a spoked wheel the axle is " hung" from the top of the rim.
    What this means for performance or rideability, I don't know. But if you think about it, it is true. Spokes are not strong enough to support the weight of the bike from below.

    • @stimpsonjcat26
      @stimpsonjcat26 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Power shifting is pretty much like regular shifting except you do not let off the throttle when shifting to the next gear. I don't recommend this on a bike. I think it is used more in cars. I could see things going very wrong very quick on a bike.

    • @DenrossSalenga
      @DenrossSalenga 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      up for this!

    • @stimpsonjcat26
      @stimpsonjcat26 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I just explained power shifting. It is not like clutchless shifting or having a quickshifter. Quickshifters and clutchless shiffiting work the same way. They both momentarily cut the throttle at the same time the shift occurs. The only difference is that clutchless shifting requires the an individual to close the throttle while a quickshifter causes the throttle to cut automatically by telling the computer when the shift is happening.
      With power shifting you do NOT let off the throttle when you shift. You keep the throttle wide open and make the shift. This allows the engine to produce more power right when the clutch engages.

    With the potholes of our poor infrastructure, wire wheels have an extra reason for road use. It's so great to see a comparison of the 2 types. I started really liking wire spoke wheels, because of how customizable & personal they are.
    It's easy to replace damaged parts. but it's also easy to change the rim diameter & width, and keep the same hub. I don't have to find some company, to cast & form me, a fully custom wheel, when I want to use different tires. I'm learning how to professionally lace & true wire wheels. It seems very therapeutic.
    Those are my reasons, but I never thought about the extra durability of them. As for light weight. Titanium spokes exist. And at least for bicycles, there are carbonfiber rims. I haven't yet looked up carbonfiber rims for motorcycles. But I know carbonfiber wheels exist, for bicycles, motorcycles, and cars. Very strong & light, just very expressive.

      CF wheels on push bikes are for v. lightweight riders, have a weight limit and I wouldn't go near them. Not nearly as durable as alloy.

    • @0_K_0
      @0_K_0 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sandydennylives1392 , false, cf has been proven to be stronger than steel in most cases and definitely stronger than aluminium rims, all wheels have a weight limit, but cf rims don't have a lower weight limit than aluminium ones so no they are not for very light riders. The main reasons to get cf rims are well, firstly they are a lot lighter and as such improve acceleration, they are stiffer making them corner better and lastly they absorb vibrations better. I can vouch for cf rims as i went from hope tech4 aluminium rims to mavic cf ones, they felt much more responsive and the grip and acceleration was phenomenal. Cons to cf rims are well the obvious high pricing couple that with the fact that in the event of a crash they are more likely to snap in half than bend or buckle but if you're crashing hard enough to break cf rims then you don't deserve them and should stick to aluminium.

    • @sandydennylives1392
      @sandydennylives1392 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@0_K_0 I'm just not in the market for 2K wheels. A CF frame has an MpA rating of a couple of 100, my steel 1200. I simply don't trust it, and my bike shop refused to sell me a CF even though it would be more money for them, when they built up my elite, now stolen, steel; that was 1400 MpA.

    As far as rigidity goes, a wire spoke wheel can do about the same as a good mag. Some flex can help. It will not do too bad in the weight department either if you use a good alloy rim. To get sufficient stiffness you need to run an alloy rim.. Most steel rims flex at the spoke entry allowing the wheel to twist some. I've always seen a pretty drastic improvement when going from steel to alloy rims.

  • @arijit276
    @arijit276 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I like spokes, I have seen lot of cracked alloys on bad roads to be comfortable with them.
    The worst I had with spokes was a bent spoke when I crashed into a ditch. Came back replaced it good to go again.

    In the 1970s Honda used a cross between spokes and solid alloy - Comstar, it was called I believe. It looked more like a cast wheel but had about 4 - 5 " steel spokes. Honda said that they offered the best of both worlds - tubeless rims and the flexibility of steel. I had them on my CX500. Never had a problem with them but apparently they did not look quite right for the customers and were discontinued. Care to comment on them?

I realize they are also heavy after I put 45psi in rear tire. so it means alloys would be more heavier. You also left out that when cast wheels fail, they fail catastrophically most of the time. Especially harder materials like aluminium and magnesium alloys. @@sneakerjoe23 he did say that but it was in reference to the spoked wheels being easier to repair, not that they could be safer when a failure occurs. It is an easy inference to make from his statements, and pretty obvious and self evident. I bet he intentionally didn't specifically say it to avoid offending all the militant crotch rocket squids. Or maybe it's a hot take because it could imply that motorcycle manufacturers are sacrificing (a little) safety for profit.
      Anyway, imo spoked>mag because durability and low maintenance is my prime concern in owning a bike.

    One thing that wasn´t mentioned is that when a tube punctures, it pops like a balloon, letting all the air out at once, something very dangerous needless to say. This happened to me on the freeway last year on my bike that runs wire wheels with an inner tube. My rear tire suddenly went completely flat. How I didn´t lose control of the bike I have no idea. I was able to stop gradually using only the front brake. But if I had lost it, I would have gone down hard. For that reason I stay away from tubed wire wheels now.

    The Kineo spoked wheel to the left of you has a solid rim, no seals necessary, and is therefore tubeless. It prbably wont give as much as a normal spoked rim because of rhe added thickness to the rim which means it is likely less durable and more rigid. It would be nice if you could have mentioned the properties of this wheel design as it lies somewhere in between. Great vid :)

      In normal spark plugs Copper conducts better and is generally used in higher-performance/modified engines.
      Iridium and platinum plugs are chosen for their longevity only. You shouldn't gap iridiums because of potential damage to the tips. For that reason and their inferior conductivity, they aren't used in modified engines. Keep in mind their price, as well.

    How often do spoke wheels need to be adjusted or trued? To the spokes come loose?

    I've never felt a handling advantage from cast wheels and once they get some serious miles usually the opposite. Other things, even changing the fork oil, make a much bigger difference in feel.

    Surely this vid missed the essential difference between the two. One type is easy to clean, the other is a pain, and you end up with rust in places you'd rather not have it.

    do a video next please on engine designs and lay outs :) 1 vs 2 vs 3 vs 4 cylinders and how it affects powerband torque rev limit etc etc
    always been curious why certain manufacturers choose different engine set ups for the same class of bikes with the same or similar cc/hp

    I daily a motocross bike. Spoke wheels are all fun and shiny and most importantly way better looking than alloy wheels we can all agree on this.
    But they’re giving me a really bard time as they require some sort of extra care and maintenance. I’ve been thinking about going for a sumo conversion (17” front and back, instead of 21/18) on one hand the price is the only thing holding me back and I’m considering a pair of alloy wheels instead. What do you guys think ?
    That if if anyone ever sees this comment, and thank you in advance.

    I have these Kineo wheels. They are excellent. Build quality is superbe and they are so light than the stock wheels that I had. Very well balanced as well. They made my XJR 1300 2016 feel so nimble and reactive. They look sick as well.

    Thanks guys for another proper video. In my case, Speed Triple R 2016, the spoke wheels are 1.5kg heavier than the stock alloy wheels. And that does affect the riding and launching mode vastly. It is still sweet and powerful, but not like with the stock wheels. On the other hand, the bike feels much more smoother on uneven terrain and in places like my city, Bogota, that's a treat you can say no to! so very happy my spoke wheels. It all depends on what you are after: Cool Look or sweet performance.

    Mag wheels plus point: they are much quicker to clean. Spokes take a lot more time to clean individually. Good video, thanks.

    Flex, strength, and rigidity can be somewhat controlled in wire wheels during the building process. For example, close to 100% of motorcycle wheels are built with a 2 cross pattern. This is to give some flex which would be totally absent if it was built with a radial pattern. But this needn't be a limitation, higher cross patterns can be used, limited by the number of spokes, and the diameters of rim and hub. Four cross patterns were routinely used in competitive road bicycles back in the days of 36 hole rims with low flange hubs. These wheels could take a lot of punishment. About 30 years ago I stripped a comstar wheel and spun up a couple of discs to carry the spokes. I fitted a 40 hole rim using a 3 cross with 8 gauge spokes for a front wheel. I've only ever tuned that wheel once during that time. It is extremely strong while still delivering a very forgiving ride as far as the rim is concerned. The main limitation in using heavy spokes is the strength of the rim (they can develop longitudinal cracks from the holes if insufficient), and that enough meat is on the flanges of the hub (insufficient meat can cause breakage, probably only involving a single spoke). For motorcycles, it is important that the rims are "blistered" where the spokes enter, and that these are accurately drilled for the desired cross pattern. For anyone contemplating taking this route, I would highly recommend an insistence that the spoke threads be greased, preferably with moly grease. For some unfathomable reason, most builders do it dry. Probably because they are either stupid or lazy, maybe because they like doing rebuilds when the nipples are all frozen.

    Out of the usual box, I pull a trailer when I camp, and we totally thrash the mountains when we go. I got sick of breaking rear spokes on my much-modded Harley, so put Fatboy wheels on my Heritage. Solved the problem, but those babies NEED the stage 2 engine: they weigh 36lbs apiece!
