Wrong! I work in the welfare to work industry and I dont know if you are up on the news, but the outfit she worked for (a4e) were forced into liquidation when they were found to be guilty of massive fraud worth millions of tax payers money. They were forging signitures and claiming money for job seekers that didnt exist. They have the cheek to make a celebrity of this narcissistic idiot calling people scroungers when they have robbed the tax payer of hundreds of millions.

Finally! A show that is responsible enough not just to identify the problem, judge and blame those caught in the vicious cycle, but to actually HELP. I am glad that the HELP is more beneficiary-focused, structured, serious, hands-on / close contact, and practical instead of the system-focused, unstructured, casual, distant, impractical 'shouts' at those caught in the web. I hope the beneficiaries manage to make steady, stable, salaried transitions. It certainly is NOT easy to make changes into the real world of work after years on the dole, given the cumulative effect of psychological and other effects on people. Thank you.
PS: The widespread and devastating Covid-19 effects on jobs should make many MORE people sympathetic about job loss, and appreciative of the existence of economic assistance programs for those affected. NOTE: Not all countries have the benefit of economic support programs like the UK has.

you know that the "economic support program" that you mention that the uk has..........well the uk benefits system is among the most least generous in europe and in some aspects sits at the bottom of the table. a single person earning under £15 per hour in the uk lives in poverty. the minimum wage is £10.42. there are currently around 20% of all households in the uk living in poverty and a third of all people living in poverty are children, this is mainly due to the generous "economic support program"
during the £20 covid uplift, poverty in the uk dropped by almost 2% but went back up when the uplift ended and further up still with the current state of the economy
meanwhile, the top 10% rich in the uk are more wealthy than the top 10% of any other european country, the bottom 20% are only poorer in countries like romania and ukraine for example
i think the entire system is disgusting

@@Katarina23 No one's life is 'free and content' if they owe a lot of money, even if they aren't required to pay interest. A bank that operates in accordance with shari'ah still has to make money and they make it from the customers who have the kind of financial needs that only a bank can fulfil, like the money to buy a house, for example. They are paying a higher than market rate for the property, but, for those who can get it, it's a good deal, and it's a much fairer way to run a financial system. Too many lives are made unbearable by the burden of debt that doesn't get smaller even though repayments are being made, but it's very hard to feel free when you owe someone money, it's still a big responsibility.

This would work not because people are afraid of poverty bit because people generally do want to work if they see it as providing more stability.
The problem is currently the lower finacial position you start in, the more you are going to have to pay in order to get out of poverty, because the system puts people in debt to get an education or to have a laptop which you have no choice to get but costs more than you can save up because if you do save up a little you wont get any benefits and lose your savings to use them to live.

I was up at the crack of dawn, went to bed late at night and was up to my eyeballs in debt. Every person I'd ever owed money to crawled out of the woodwork with their hands outstretched. It was a lot of grief for an extra 15 quid but there was light at the end of the tunnel. It costs us £30 per minute for services like Big Word, or the Language Line so you can imagine what kind of money the interpreters earn. There needs to be a phase out period when they go from benefit to work. When they first get a job they should be able to keep their benefit for a month as well as their wage. This will give them courage as the benefit is reduced by a third each week till the months out. By that time the rug has not been pulled out from under them and they can go forward from a firm foundation. This can only happen to the worker three times so they don't play the system

Agree, and there needs to be staircasing of other benefits so they are not dropped off the deep end. For example, the amount of child care shouldn’t plunge them into the red justbecause they earn 50p over a threshold. Benefits should be that helping hand to get them on their feet again and not make working putting them worse off.

    • @lozzylols

ESA allows something called permitted work, you can do up to 16 hours a week and up to a certain amount of income a week and still get your benefit (all work has to be recorded with job centre) this way if you health/disability that stops you working, doesn't agree with the work, you just go back to the benefit without reapplying. It also tops up for those who can do maybe only 6 or 10 hours a week, the person gets job satisfaction and pride without giving up all the benefits money. Now things are changing over to UC I hope this is something they keep, as it is a big lifeline. When you have had an illness/disability for a long time, it's hard to look towards anything that takes you more towards 'normal' when it is all you have known for so long, and in a way has come to define you!

    • @claireanderson4642
      @claireanderson4642 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

That's a really good idea, actually. One of the hardest parts about coming off of benefits is supporting yourself until your first pay check. Most people have to work a month in hand, so depending when you start, it could be anything up to 6 weeks before you see the fruits of your labour.

the thing is, any child who is raised in povery is more likely to stay in poverty as an adult, more likely to turn to drugs, to turn to crime, to end up in prison - less likely to excel or succeed, less likely to go into further education, get any kind of career.......etc etc etc. its called the poverty trap, you may have heard of it
anyway, whilst we dont know whether the people featured not just in this episode of the show but also others attended any kind of further education past the age of 16 or not, its probably fair to assume that they did not, given their backgrounds, in which case i think the greatest of respect is deserved for them not to just be willing to make an effort to find work in the first place but also be prepared to actually do it when they do find it

I live in France and am (was then) on unemployment benefits. There is a system where if you work temporary mission, they still give you the allowance but deduct what you earned from it. I lost 100€ of allowance working for a restaurant last week and 50€ working in a shop for a one day mission... after deducting pay, that is. It is true that in some cases, working is at your financial detriment. However, if you find full time work and get off the benefits, you do get 150 euros for a few months as incentive.

Argh it’s so frustrating when they churn out the old ‘foreigners taking all the jobs’. There’s been several cases and even a documentary series where they took a cross section of unemployed people with such beliefs and then got them jobs where the majority of the workforce was made up of immigrants/migrant workers and virtually all of them were either late, complained the work was too hard or the other workers were too fast in some cases(!). It was quite shocking really how almost all were happy to go back on the dole despite their previous complaints. And that’s what it boiled down to everyone had complaints and no one had the will.

It's not enough but the government feels there's not much point to pour loads of money into unemployment and I don't blame them as I wouldn't want to spend money on those who aren't contributing to society. This one really hit home. I'm not on benefits (yet) but I would be if I didn't have parents who let me live at home as an adult. Dean and Maxine started a family which needed their own space but they were struggling to provide for their family as they were young and inexperienced with work. They both had such a positive attitude towards getting their work experience and they obviously want a better life. We shouldn't ostracise people like this because they clearly just need help.
I am a 23 year old graduate and my first job out of university was in a kitchen because I couldn't secure a job anywhere relevant to my field. The working world is so difficult to navigate and there needs to be more help for people to get a job because it is ruthless and disheartening. I'm always on the stance of that it's not what you know but who you know. In my first ever job, while I was a student, my manager hired her younger, less experienced daughter for a higher paid role than me.
It's all about connections and it's how the cycle continues. Social mobility is rare.

I have a friend who insisted that people should look at her inner values instead of her outside looks. She went to job interviews with this mindset. Coundn't get a job. She was terribly upset when I told her that she was required to dress up, because that went against her personal values and she had a degree and with that shouldn't be required to dress up for anybody. Well. She got a job once she started to dress up.
No, it's not nice that even in IT you can't go to a job interview in old leggins and comfy T-Shirt. But if another applicant with similar competences as you comes better dressed then they will get the job, not you. As much as I admire her steadyfastness on that she doesn't judge people by their looks (she really doesn't), that is unfortunately not the reality of society. You either conform or you lose.

According to Hayley's calculations at the beginning of this video this young couple were receiving the same amount on benefits as many people receive for doing a decent day's work. If this is true then one cannot blame them for staying at home and not applying for jobs. The system is at fault here because as long as people receive this amount in social benefits then there is no incentive whatever to go to work. On the other hand however having a job gives a person self respect even if it is not particularly well paid and their day has a certain amount of structure. It is all too easy, as seen on this video, for people who are unemployed to get into bad habits, such as getting up late and sitting around all day doing nothing. The young couple shown here were extremely likeable, even the skinhead Dean and I really hope that they both succeed in life.

The problem is not what people get in benefit payments, but that wages for basic unskilled but essential jobs are so low. The longer you are on benefits, the poorer you get. I find that the people who think living on benefits is the life of Riley, have never had to claim benefits themselves.

Absolutely happy for dean. Young man who’s stuck with his mrs and kid (as he should) hasn’t ran away and thrown in the towel, to say and now he’s found a job that can actually help him take care of his family. This is great, man. Also, dean, you’ve got a full crown of hair, I’m glad you’ve decided to start growing it in! 😂

They need a system like here in Australia. You continue getting your benefits when you aren’t earning enough, then once you’re earning more than the threshold, you continue reporting every fortnight for 6 fortnight’s before you get cut off. If that makes sense.

@@BookloverFantasy92 Stuff like the amount of money for one would go down if the other got work so overall they would probably not be that much better off. It's difficult to succinctly explain. They also are entitled to not pay certain things like council tax if both are on benefits that would then come out of the working persons wage.

I absolutely love this woman, but people may say different. What you see is what you get, and she's doing the right thing. People on benefits yes in some cases it's needed. Others well you see it for yourself. Some of these documentaries filmed in the UK will bring you sick to your stomach including people claiming for money to pay for their huge houses in EU countries and on film even thanking the British government for being so easy.. let's get to the point this woman is an absolute godsend she don't take rubbish no excuses and that's the best way if you don't work you don't get paid end of.

That horrible money lender! Is that legal? Are there no laws against charging exorbitant "interest" rates? This man and whoever he is working with has apparently been preying on these ignorant, struggling people. This should not be allowed.

    • @sophiefoster1311

I’d assume he works for a ‘payday loans’ type company. Which is legal as are high interest rates.
Loan sharks who don’t pay tax/use violence are illegal. Lenders who pay tax and use the courts/Bayliffs are legal.
