The thing that bothers me is the materials they are using. We don't use this type of wood because it will rot very soon, we have found within 5 years or less, and this is an expensive dock. This builder reminds me of many that I have came across in my career as a dock builder. AND in answer to many on here that are concerned about the piling's, your concerns are valid. We drive piles, it is harder to do but it is much more secure and lasts a lot longer. Even with the pneumatic hammer that we use it is still difficult to find square but well worth it! This guy seems like a general contractor gone dock builder to get in on the money. He probably doesn't know that he is building a dock out of poor materials. I would not build this as a deck on dry land let alone in the water. He needs to learn more about his materials.
What type of wood should I use? I am wanting to build a ramp or some wide stairs to help my dogs get in and out of the water. Whatever I install will just get painted the same color as the dock. Is it a matter of just getting any pressure-treated wood or should I be looking into certain species?
I'm assuming those concrete footings are four feet or more down under the sand under the water??? I bet after one year the lower deck heaved. I see it all the time. The ice pushes anything in the water straight up and out.

Hey guys, this looks like a great idea for my cottage...just wondering what you do to protect your support in winter...you would have to use a bubble system or something would you? I assume there is no/minimal ice movement at this location during spring thaw?

Love the 6 - 8 - 10 ft triangle to check to see if it's square. I was taught 3 - 4 - 5 ft. but I think it's the same thing. Great video! Gave me the nerve and the information to give this a try ourselves!
Same! While all of us (that went to school) know it as a 3-4-5 triangle, I had never thought to apply it this way!
And extending it to 6-8-10 provides more accuracy.
On bigger builds you can use any multiple of the 3,4,5

Wow! just place cement deck block for footing? lol. It won't last one flood season where I live. I did like the way he squared the framing though - 6',8',10' method, so my time was not wasted watching this video.

If you have enough money to afford a house next to a river then it probably doesn't matter how much it costs. Besides cost will change drastically depending on location and materials
Where was this lake? Other then BC I don't know of any lake in Canada that wouldn't freeze and destroy that dock. Also you can drop concrete deck blocks or poured concrete in any lakes in Ontario.

I would love to have something like that bridging from the creek bank to the water but what do I do when it floods a couple times at year and downed trees are sailing through the water and hit the dock. Hinge and winch system??

when building a dock should you use any kind of stain or sealant to make it last longer or use any specific wood like cedar or treated wood?
You skipped over the part that concerns me with this type of build. How do you place the underwater footings? Looks like you just placed the concrete pad right on the floor of the lake, did you have to dig down to the rock bed?

I have a place on a lake in Maine, this would be gone by next Spring :P
I opted to build a long floating dock with bicycle wheels on the end and I use a simple hand winch to pull it up the steep grade, and store it in the basement over the Winter.

ottawadigs They pull out the prefab decks during winter, they aren't attached with any permanent hardware because they have to move up and down with the water.
Exactly what I wondered
I live in MA. Our docks come out in winter. I don't know if any dock will survive ice. Water expands 9 to 10 I believe. That means 9 gallons of water is equal to about 10 gallons of ice. Think how much a 30 foot dock would have to expand to keep up. Not happening. There are special designed docks but they are very expensive.

I’m not certain, but I think they just referred to a “3,4,5” right triangle. Builders use it a lot and it’s scalable- 6,8,10 is also a right triangle.

How do you build the dock onto the deck with stable foundation for the rise and drop of the lake level?
MRrwmac It floats! just allow it to float up and down the lower deck, which i agree could be weird with high water. Trip hazard?

I don't understand! A set square or right angle will show whether two pieces of wood are perpendicular no matter how long it is! Unless of course its wonky in the middle! And you should really put it on a raised and solid concrete base with drainage to stop it from rotting right?
Nathaniel Struselis Its not that it wont make it perpendicular, but if you are off by just a fraction of a degree, it can wreak havoc on the rest of the build. Using the tape just makes it that degree or two more accurate. PS, if you do this a lot, Fastcap makes a tape measure that is specifically designed to help measure boards square. I think it is called the procarpenter square one tape measure
