Hit doors using the space bar, and wait. If a zombie is inside, or near they will move toward you, and beat on any doors or windows in the way. Its not to loud, but will let you know if any zombies are in the nearby rooms.

Do you use many mods? Look into Craft Helper Continued, Common Sense, Recipes+, Backpack Borders, Combat Text, Show Skill Xp Gain, and Weapon Condition Indicator. I have a bunch of other recommendations if you're interested. These are mostly quality of life mods. I have other that make the game much harder. But since your rather new to the game, Ill save them for later. LOL
