  • Chasing bream on fly is one of those fishing challenges that never loses its appeal, in my book. Judging by the number of questions I receive on the topic, I'm guessing I'm not alone! If that challenge appeals to you too, jump on board and join me as we chase bream on the edges of an estuarine lake and I share the ups, the downright frustrating and my best insights into successfully targeting bream on fly.

    Steve,
    Just want to say a huge thanks for what you have taught me over the years. From back in the early IM6 jig-flicker days of FW Fishing mag through to now. I have always found you VERY informative as well as entertaining. Cheers Steve and thank you very much.

    Excellent. Loved the simple natural camera style and the pure focus on the fishing. Casting footage especially was like being there on the boat and had the true feel of the place, the process and the experience. And no high end bloke yodelling.
    so it looks like bream on fly the next challenge.

    I raised my eyebrow when you said you were using a 6 wt. rod. The other one went up when I saw what you were calling a bream. I live in SC, USA and our bream look nothing like that. A 3 or 4 wt. is preferable here. I've learned something here today. Great looking fish!

      Thanks Johnny! Yes, the subject of common fish names in different parts of the world is rather confusing! Here in Australia our "bream" is a member of the same marine and estuarine fish family that contains your porgy and sheepshead. I suspect that your "bream" are sunfish, bluegill, pumpkinseeds, etc?
      Cheers & Tight Lines,

    I'm embarrassed to admit that black bream on fly is my Achilles' heel and out of pure desperation came to TH-cam to try and discover where I'm going wrong. I thought maybe it was my retrieve so wanted to see what the successful anglers use. Having been a Starlo fan for the last 30yrs I was beyond stoked to find this video, but it seems I'm doing literally EVERYTHING the same...tackle, technique, habitat...about the only dif is I'm wading. It's got me stuffed...I'll watch this vid another half dozen times closely looking for detail and keep plugging away, what else can you do. :/ Brilliant seeing you on TH-cam now Steve, some of us hacks need all the help we can get and actual footage adds a whole new dimension over seeing things in print...cheers and please keep the video's coming!

      Thanks for the feedback! Sorry for my slow response but I only just found your comment. Stick with it, you'll crack them. Maybe lengthen your leader up to keep the fly line away from spooky fish in shallow water.

    Beautifully made and presented. Such a lovely location as well. Ilm tanking about starting fly fishing in the shallows for whiting or whatever. I only have my usual 4 wt fly rod and reel, but I'm hoping that if I wash it throughly soon after salt fishing.it weill be OK. What do you advise? I really don't want a third rod just for salt. (I have cute 1 wt for r=tiny waters). Best wishes. :-)

    • @StarloGetsReel
      @StarloGetsReel  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Terry! Yes, that freshwater 4-weight outfit will be fine for lighter saltwater fishing for whiting, bream, flathead, mullet and so on with flies up to about No. 2 hook sizes. As you've identified, you just need to be careful to wash and dry it really well after use in the salt. In particular, I'd recommend stripping the fly line off the reel into a tub of freshwater after use and drying it with a soft cloth as you wind it back on. Tight Lines!

    • @TERRYBIGGENDEN
      @TERRYBIGGENDEN 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks fo that reply and excellent advice. I'll think about it. I want to keep my rod's runners in good nick, but I really want to try fly fishing in my local Sydney/Lane Cove/Hacking River river. I even had an idea of trying a weighted fly (or with a sinker) using a hardline off jetties. :-) I'll check out your other videos as well.

    Hi steve, in your thoughts why is it that catching bream on fly is so much more difficult, most shrimp patterns look fantastic, in my local system catching bream on the surface or on small divers especially if you find the right one on the day can be incredibly easy. I am all set with flies etc but haven’t yet caught one, and I’m just interested in why it’s so challenging ?

    • @gavinhurley8918
      @gavinhurley8918 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not just for me personally but generally speaking

    • @StarloGetsReel
      @StarloGetsReel  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@gavinhurley8918 I've wondered about that a lot myself. I once thought that the flies we used simply weren't as attractive and tempting as the best lures, but there are some great patterns around now that look SO damn good in the water, so it can't be that, or certainly not JUST that... There's got to be more to it. The only conclusion I can draw is that bream are far more "situation aware" than just about anything else we fish for... anywhere. Forget about the wily trout, fickle bonefish, untouchable permit or whatever else. The humble bream is arguably the master of "hook avoidance" and their strengths in this department increase with age and size. I think fat fly lines too close to the fish are death. I didn't start to catch bream on fly with anything even approaching consistency until I went back to a floating fly line and a ridiculously long leader. Separate the deception as far as possible from the delivery vehicle, keep the fly line up out of the bream's world and impart a lift-drop-lift action to the weighted fly that's reminiscent of a jig-rigged soft plastic. Then and only then does fly fishing for them become perhaps half as effective as throwing a lure on modern finesse tackle. Go figure, eh? :)

    • @gavinhurley8918
      @gavinhurley8918 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Starlo Gets Reel partly maybe to casting distance? Or just the fly line landing on the water?
      I am only a new fly fisher but understand bream habitat and lure fishing well enough to know I should be catching them but am not!
      Maybe no wriggly tail or lure action?
      Look forward to hopefully hearing more and maybe seeing more footage in future articles and episodes in the future.

    Here in the States, what you refer to as a bream in actually in the Porgy family and we have one inshore with bars called a sheephead. Our normal porgys like you have there stay offshore in our waters, not inshore like your bream. But our sheephead will stay inshore, as well as some near shore structure. They too are hard to catch them on the fly. The best fly however I've found to catch them is a very small weighted crab on a sinking fly line with small short bumping strips for a retrieve.

    • @StarloGetsReel
      @StarloGetsReel  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, our "bream" are in the same family (Sparidae) as your porgy and sheephead. Crab flies work well on our bream, too!
