@@NavieD Listening to his music for more than 20 years now? So that would put you at, what, -3 years old when you first heard his music? 😂 Always thought you were mid-twenties at most. If you’re an old man then I’m close to death.
I know you’re not one to ‘toot your own horn’ but these videos are super helpful for inspiring me to do something different instead of what I usually do.
Love The Alchemist. I remember I first heard his stuff through my older cousins cassette tapes (Back in the 90's when I was a snotty nosed kid). Then later I got into Dilated Peoples, and I would say, him and Dre as well as a lot of 90's producers/beat makers like you said, Dilla etc. all deeply influenced my love for Hip-Hop. You broke a lot of the things I notice in Alchs production method down very nicely and it's incredible how much this can improve modern producers methods in keeping one very important thing strong, and you point it out quite vividly. That is, to accomplish the same goal but switch it up with more uniqueness. This very aspect in production is what I believe is at the heart of all hip-hop from that period. And Alch shows it in his beat making methods, in which you point out very well and guide us through like a real boss. Thanks Nav, you are a producers delight.
dude all the beats you put together for these explainer videos are always sooooo smooth. I really hope to be able to make stuff like this one day. Cheers man.
Usually when someone makes videos about guys like ALC, I cringe because ppl are so extra with the commentary. You not only made a beat that if I didn’t know you made it, I would’ve thought it was an actual ALC beat, but your commentary on the beat breakdown is professional as hell. Salute man.
Man you have turned me on to so many amazing producers. Always been somewhat a fan of Dilla, but never listened to much of The Alchemist or Madlib and stuff. Studying their music has helped me so much, and then on top of that you drop knowledge like this really breaking it down? Thank you Navie, my man! 🙏
@@NavieD Haha right?! I've definitely heard of them over the years, but for some reason never checked them out. Been using pandora again to find amazing artists that I've heard of but never given the chance, instead of just reaching for what I'm used to. The Freddie Gibbs × Madlib project has been amazing!

You are a very dope producer. You are definitive dopeness and extremely versatile. Some people have that ear for music and you definitely do have an amazing sound selection especially for hip hop.
I could’ve bet he was going to mention alchemist’s use of sound effects and how most of them aren’t repetitive as other producers’ transitions or fx. But the adsr tip was really helpful. Appreciate you man! Gonna like and keep and learning from your tutorials.
The constant sample playing is tonal and actually has a lot in common with pedal tones from musical composition. This was something I've done unconsciously up until now, but thanks to this video I now have a new technique in the ol' foot locker.
Youre delivery and explanation is very calm and concise. I like that you promote originality and detail simple ways to create your own mark on a beat...keep up the good work peace!
that first technique was pretty nice the first time i heard it, i didnt notice this single pad sound, but it really adds to the beat (subconscious sounds are great)
The Alchemist is one of my favourites as well! I haven't consciously seeked to emulate his style or anything, but after watching this I noticed I have done these things pretty naturally in my music as well.
Well that's because it's not his style! Alchemist is a hiphop student and makes hiphop the way artist's from the 90's made thier tracks. It's just hiphop and people that don't know shit about hiphop look too much into it! This guy is like the teachers you see in schools today teaching "hip hop dance" to kids smh
Such a great video. I often find that out of convenience, time, etc. that I just use the same sounds over and over and my beats sound repetitive. But now my scope has been broadened. I need to practice playing around more with the adsr to really shape sounds to fit the idea that I have in mind rather than just saying fuck it and completely going away from my original plan. As always, very thorough Navie. Much love to everyone.

Great video with lots of useful tips! I'm definitely going to use them! One thing I loved with alchemist this thing of ours (which is sooooooo good) is that his beats sometimes don't even feature drums but still have a very strong sence of rhythm!
Another dime! Iv felt that using unique sounds for transitions/and or just fx in general, its much more interesting to use stuff people don’t expect to give it some nuance. Gonna definitely put that envelope to use now. Thanks man!
@@NavieD Prefer the old currently bc you truly have to build the sounds and create effects manually (I don't have the effects on mine), plus its just something about older equipment with the sound and authenticity. New models are smaller and more portable so may get one in the near future.
