It does indeed look professional and those splices will NEVER come apart.

Thanks for another great video. I am an electrician, few people know about the seam in the connectors and how to properly put them in the crimping tool. Great tip

Thank Nick, I did same thing a year after getting my 66. When I started going through what someone before me did, they twisted wires together. Real bad..

That's a great looking transition point at the splice Nick!
I've seen, and done some pretty horrible looking splice jobs! Lol

Yeah, I think we have all done things that we didnt want to write home about. I know Ive got a few under my belt. But more good looking than the splice is the wires them selves. They sure make the engine look better. Thanks Alvin.

As usual very helpful. I just re watched your video about the accessories on the engine from the T&L car I believe. I might call you and send some pics just to get your expertise. Tavi in Denver

Thanks for the tuneup hints and suggestions! As to wiring: when exactly did Ford go from cloth insulation to plastic/vinyl insulation? It looks like the '58 you're working on has some original wiring, and it looks like the insulation on that wiring is plastic. My impression is that they changed about the time they went from 6 volt to 12 volt, but I don't know if it was EXACTLY at the same time they did that.
I completely rewired my '54 Ranch Wagon a couple of years ago as it had original wiring with cloth insulation...scary stuff on an original car. I hate to admit it, but I went too long without addressing the old wiring. Some of the insulation had peeled off over several inches in a couple places. I just painted it with several coats of liquid electrical tape! It worked, but I eventually avoided that risky approach and replaced all the wiring with a good quality properly insulated kit/harness. It wasn't original looking but oh well. They have cloth insulated wiring that has plastic/vinyl under the cloth but it was far too expensive for me. My rewire job is still working but I'm certainly no expert, so I appreciate the hints. That was the only car I ever rewired.

Hey Kaye Nine Two, I dont really know when they made the change. The 58 is just like the square bird, even the replacement suspension parts are the same. All the wiring is basically the same. I had to rewire the Thelma and Louise car, only car I had to do that on. Thanks.

Nick is always I enjoy your videos, I would like to get the pricing on the three wire set up but I want to run the wires from the sending units and that that being the coil to a small tachometer / oil pressure set-unit and coolant temperature setting unit mounted in the center console where the ashtray is so I need longer wires
I am also in need of the hollow bullets that you’re using for connectors that you sweated with solder, and the L shaped rubber capped connectors.
I also really want to replace my dash instrumentation lights with LEDs. They currently don’t work at all and I’ve ordered a new light reastat signals headlights brake lights back up, light all those dash lights. All your thoughts are great if you could do a video addressing some of the stuff I have a 62 Ford Thunderbird roadster convertible, obviously red white top Minneapolis, I am pounding through the list but your advice and expertise is always greatly appreciated enjoyable to watch and a huge help.
Please send me the cost of the wires and the L shaped caps to go to the different units in the vehicle and the new sending gauges that I’m going to install if you have a preference on the gauges let me know that too OK thank you Michael Vonsmith

Hey Michael, the 3 wires are $20 and the shipping is $10. I didnt know what you meant by the new sending gauges? Please explain.

@@vintagethunderbirdrepair9426 new sending units is at the temp and oil or basically idiot gauges on the dash of this car and I’m gonna put real gauges in the center consul and the ashtray/cigarette lighter is and so I want to have an accurate sending unit for the oil temperature and pressure and coolant temperature versus just the idiot gauges that Ford gives you on their dash can I put those units sending units and the existing holes are there other holes on the 390 inch and I need to be aware of
I really do like your wire work and how you did it. I think it looks super. You also have pictures of a crumpled by tool connector that you said was for sale for wire and a looks like a brass ring that goes on the wire and then in a sleeve to go over a sending unit
The length of the wire that I want would be about three wires 15 feet long could that be done with the L-shaped connector on each end? So two connectors per wire?
      Thx Michael

@@vintagethunderbirdrepair9426 hey I would definitely like to know if the wire is copper and tender copper wire and what is the coding of the sleeve of that tin copper wire if that’s the case and I only want to do this once as you know, and so those are important things to me. Also, any references on where to get the actual sending units of selves the new ones that screw into the block.

Hello Nick. You say every 60s Tbird will probably need these wires replaced? Guess I'll need to look mine over. I don't remember them being brittle or hard, but we will see.

Hey George, Just about every Thunderbird I see, these wires have taken a hit in one way or the other. There are some original cars out there where they have not been damaged but that is very rare. I have always preached that the wiring in the engine compartment is old and baked and I always recommend to people to change their engine compartment wiring. You can get brand new looms. I realize that some people just cant afford it or do not have the skills to replace it. Its unfortunate. But the sending unit wires, the alternator wires and battery cables take the biggest hit usually. Thats another thing, every car that comes through here has bad battery cables. I dont understand it. They are cheap to buy and easy to replace. Thats my rant for the day. Thanks.

Hey Pieter, yes I think so. I say in the video that 58-60 Thunderbirds have a blue with yellow stripe coil wire. My reproduction coil wire is red with a green stripe but what does it matter if your not building a 100 point show car. So these will work well on your car. Thanks.
