@@carultch "You have a right to ignore my opinion" is the point. You can express your opinion but any shreds of a democracy we've got left depend pretty much on whether you can get laws enacted that make it illegal to ignore you. If you don't share/know her experience and you biologically CAN'T share/know her experience you have no moral right to call for laws that deny her ownership of her body. You can express such an opinion but your invasion of her privacy is immoral. Calling for your opinions to be made into decrees is an attack against democracy.
It seems glaringly obvious to me that what Ingrid meant, and what you chose not to see, was: "When a man can bear a child, he can [morally] have an opinion." She obviously meant, and you chose not to see, that your ability to form an opinion doesn't give you any moral right to advocate the overthrow of her rights, her personhood, or what's left of our democracy.

@@motherteresa8418 next time you get on your high horse and fall into the typical "atheist are sociopathic" stupidity...keep in mind practically every single one of these bills in the United States is being sponsored by profoundly "religious" people. I say "religious" because nearly every "Christian" I know violates the compassion and acceptance that Jesus espoused on a daily basis. Keep in mind that Ireland made abortion illegal for decades on the basis that Catholic policy said it was sinful.
Yes, some Atheist are anti-social jerks. But guess what: The vast majority or "religious" people are judgemental troglodytes who refuse to think that other people deserve the same amount of self-governance and control over their bodies we give them.
I hope falling off that high horse didn't hurt too much. Bruised hubris is always the worst.

    • @torbjornlekberg7756
      @torbjornlekberg7756 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@motherteresa8418 First of all, the bible is not everything that is christianity. Scripture and practice are not the same, whatever you may think. Some inconvenient parts of the book are ignored, and some practices and ideas have no basis in scripture. None the less it is all part of the religion in some capacity. Things that, for the average believer, dont need an explanation, evidence, justification or even make any sense. That it is part of the religion, making it the "will of God" is somehow enough, even if it was based ideas from medieval Europe, or written in the Middle East to fit the conditions of the bronze age society of the time.
Secondly, why would religion and its teachings be necessary for compassion? The science is clear on this issue; religion is mainly irrelevant concerning compassion. In fact, religion have often been used as an excuse for people to ignore their moral compass and tech others to do the same. The crusades and inquisition are probably the clearest examples of this, but many more exist. So blaming lack of care for others on atheism is simply not right.

A zygote, embryo, or fetus is not an infant or baby, much less a child.
98% of abortions are performed before 20 weeks: 2/3 before 8 weeks, and 90% before 12 weeks. The 2% of those performed after 20 weeks are almost entirely to abort a dead or severely deformed/critically ill fetus which will not live long after birth and also with great pointless suffering, or to save the mother's health or life due to severe pregnancy complications.
1 in 4 women have an abortion (and most who do are married and already have kids), so of course many are republican, and you know many women who have had one. 70%+ of the population supports abortion rights, meaning many republicans.
Outlawing abortions doesn't decrease their frequency, but limiting the right of females to affordable birth control, which the repubs have done in recent years by supporting the "right" of companies to refuse to cover employee birth control because of "religious/moral beliefs", does increase the need for abortions.
Moreover, abortion is morally permissible (study the ethics of abortion as examined by ethical philosophers*, that is, people that use logic, reason, evidence, and critical conceptual analysis instead of emotion, fallacies, disinformation, and chronically ambiguous scripture when analyzing ethical matters...even the church didn't have a problem with abortion until the late 1800's).
A zygote, embryo, or fetus does not have personhood, therefore it is not a person, therefore it has no rights or moral standing and can not, by definition, be murdered (a being has no rights just because it is a member of the human species...to claim this is arbitrary speciesism).
    It's a choice, not a child.
*For instance, in this recent classic work: "The Ethics of Killing: Problems at the Margins of Life
    " Jeff McMahan global.oup.com/academic/product/the-ethics-of-killing-9780195169829

Honestly I'm not sure that argument stands morally, fact is so long as the fetus depends on the mother it's 100% up to her what to do with them. This isn't about making them less human, this is one human vs another, and since you can't communicate or reason with the fetus the mother gets the choice.

Its because every dictatorship in history started by controlling women's rights and reproduction. Did you know Canada never allowed slavery? Weve had healthcare for 60+ years? Civil rights are federal law in Canada Nationally its not even debated not even in politics, its solved. This is solved in modern nations. Did you know drugs are not even tested on female mice only male mice? to test them on females would double the cost of testing, but men and women metabolize drugs differently, ambien is one example they had to lower the dose for women. Were going to need a next generation of antibiotics, superbugs are common in the public now, no warning noone cares nothings in development.

As a Canadian I feel obligated to point out we've had our own share of issues. Ever heard of those places the catholic church sent unmarried pregnant women to, cut off from the outside world and abused physically and mentally by being put to work, malnourished etc as punishment for being pregnant outside of marriage? Most people probably know them from Ireland but Canada had those too. It's a big part of why French Canadians swear in blasphemy.
More currently there's also been a rise of people trying to pass laws restricting abortion in Canada. Canada's abortion rights mainly rely on a court ruling about the charter's protection of timely and effective healthcare, so now that someone's had the audacity to use the notwithstanding clause to pass a bill going against said charter, we run the risk of another politician trying the same to pass a law restricting abortion in a similar manner. There's also a fair bit of racist and xenohpobic stuff that's gone on in Canadian history people don't hear much about because they're too busy talking about the US and stereotyping Canada as some utopic society that has done no wrong. Turns out positive stereotypes can be harmful too.

That black lady makes her point so succinctly. Not everyone is in the same situation. Humans are cruel and the world is unjust. Enough kids are out there struggling and suffering unseen but people are campaigning for the rights of cells??? What about those children born into undesirable situations by parents who don’t want them? Even planned children are struggling. The human race is not in danger of extinction but it is in danger of becoming even more morally bankrupt.

20:00 Total mischaracterisation. The question directed at Sanders was whether he believed abortion should be an option UP UNTIL the moment of birth, not AT the moment of birth. For instance, should abortion be an option at 7, 8 or 9 months, before the baby is born? The question was not when the woman is giving birth, should abortion be an option then, which as correctly pointed out is ridiculous. Sanders' answer was actually correct because this is a woman's health issue not a political one.

While I’m pro-choice all the way, I prefer that women consider adoption over abortion. Not because “its a life...” but because there are so many couples (not just women, not just straight couples) that want but can’t have a baby. I still don’t hold this over a woman’s head when she does make the decision to have an abortion because at the end of the day, it’s not my body, it’s not my decision. It’s not everyone else’s body, including other women, so it’s not their decision either. What it is, however, is an individual decision and so I don’t understand why people who are against abortions are trying to force other women to live by their views - if you don’t want an abortion, don’t have one...
