I feel like a lot of the issue is that most of the people in power were either never were allowed to or were expected not to take leave (really, speaking as a man, paternity leave was really not an acceptable thing until the mid-80s and in some areas the mid-90s), or simply expect women to slip into a subordinate role since they are primary caregivers, or were for their work lives. I am spending my European parental leave with our family in the US...sadly, we normally cannot afford to live in America. Why? College tuition, health insurance and parental leave. The US is one of the least attractive countries for international, academic parents in the world.
I know this question is for americans, but here's the german version (assuming also most european solutions are more or less similar): maternity leave: 6 weeks before the estimated birth date and 8 weeks after the actual birth - full pay parental leave summed up: both parents can take off till the 3rd birthday of the child and may have their jobs back after that period - no pay BUT parental pay: up to 14 months of 65 % of the salary (min 300 Euros, max 1800 Euros) if both parents take at least 2 months (if the father takes 2 months, the mother can take 12 months; or both take 7 simultaneously). It is also possible to multiply any given number of those 14 months by two to lengthen the paid time, BUT the total amount of paid money won't change, so only 32,5 % of the salary are paid in those months. I think that's a neat solution. Also pregnant women are protected from being fired. Maternal leave after birth is mandatory, the employer is not allowed to let you work during that time.
I'm thinking 6 months including time off before the due date. An extra 3 months worth of half days. And extra time in the event of unexpected pregnancy complications such as a premature birth.
I’m a brand manager for Epilog Laser in Colorado. Our machines start at $8k and we are growing. No maternity leave. I’m 5 months pregnant. 🤬 Hope I heal fast. 🤦🏼♀️🙄
Tehmina Ahmad Apparently you missed the part where she clearly stated it was for men as well! What is needed is paid parental leave, not maternal leave!
GorillaGuerilla parental leave would be much better, of course. But apparently the US is not really ready for it yet. So just start with maternal leave
You definitely need more than you have. First for mother and the baby to recover from childbirth and second for the baby to have time to bond with a parent. First year of baby's life is critical. We've all seen what happens to children that don't get enough one on one boding time as infants when we watched those Romanian orphanages documentaries.
Tehmina Ahmad Yes, you're right - sadly the US fail on so many of the parameters we should measure a modern civilized western country on! My native country in Scandinavia grants 52 weeks of parental leave... Four weeks for the mother starting before birth, then 14 weeks for the mother and 2 weeks for the other primary caregiver - and then 32 weeks they can divide between them, (there is currently plans to make one or two of the 32 weeks for the other primary caregiver, basically to get men to take more responsibility raising their kids, and to remove "stigma" in regards to workplaces)
Almost 50 this year, no kids or partner and I'm just a little gobsmacked right now. Only just learning how much America works, like really is at the office after 5 pm etc. Just thinking about it I need a nanna nap. Love from Australia.
I’m younger, and I’ve always been very interested in American politics- it’s like a warped funhouse mirror of our own. But it really is shocking when you consider all the people who went/go without healthcare because they are disabled or chronically ill, and that was enough to get them turfed off their insurance (which was already way too expensive). The idea of a medical bankruptcy in Australia is basically unheard of. Then there’s the no parental leave, how they find their public schools- local taxes! That’s not gonna work! So even though I’m never happy with our political situation, it does make me feel grateful. Because as a disabled person who has very high medical costs and can’t work- I’d be dead if I lived in America. I’d also not be a parent, because I wouldn’t have been able to afford to have a kid (and this was well before I became disabled). I would have had no choice but to terminate the pregnancy. And yet some Americans think they’re pro life? How does that work? So many of those people support their lack of healthcare and parental leave, and no parental payments- but those are the things that prevent abortions. Because when you know you’ll be able to afford to feed and clothe said kid, makes it far more likely you’ll choose to keep it. Like I said- it’s a funhouse mirror.
Denmark, right to minimum 40 weeks of parental leave, and it can be extended to 52 - 2 of them is for the dad, 18 for the mom, and 32 weeks can be shared between them as they see fit....
@Zuma Zuma True, and we are working on making more of it exclusive for the father/other primary caregiver.... More men is starting to take more weeks, but to help fathers, we need to legislate, so it is easier for employers to accept Tha of course the father need to take parental leave as well... Aside for how it affects the income gap, it also play a role in the bonding with the child...
2:15 Two weeks?!? I would have been physically unable to attend work *eight* weeks after birth - and I'm the father! Thank god I'm also norwegian. *phew*
I‘m on parental leave in Germany, getting full sallary 6 weeks prior to giving birth and 8 weeks after, while not working. After that it’s 1.800€ a month till the baby‘s 1st birthday. I could take 3 years off but would only be payed for 1 year. Cannot imagine how women in the US do it...
I did it, first as a single mother. Then married with my second child. Had to apply for welfare both times as my husband was fired from his job for taking a few day off to help with the baby while I recovered. Doing alright now, but I don't know how we made it through even though we lived it.
Very sad that that new parents have to go through that instead of being able to getting to know their child and care for them without the financial pressure and women also finding time to caring for themselves after pregnancy. You shouldnt have had to fight so hard
My husband was fired from his job just after our son was born 27 years ago. They claimed he took too much time off to help out caring for our child, even though he then came in extra days to make up the time.
Don't understand why people hit the thumbs down on videos like this. She talks about nothing but good things. Things people should be able to do just in principle, if nothing else.
12 weeks of parental leave for Federal employees is a very small percentage of people. Please note that Ivanka Trump is currently a federal employee for some strange reason. So she was able to pass a law that will benefit her and not most Americans.
Thank you for caring for your employees. BTW, for Canada, the leave time can be split between the parents, not just for the one who gave birth. It's also for the adoption of a child not just for birthing.
A friend of mine was back at work 3 days after giving birth. It was not a physically strenuous job, but it is still a horrible thing to do to a new mother.
I had a couple of coworkers come back to work within a week of giving birth because they couldn't afford the unpaid leave. One told me she was still bleeding and in pain....

And BTW...Samuel only responds this way because his Mom didn't get enough time to bond with him as an infant....it's all part of his insecurities to lash out inappropriately at people he doesn't know if they have a sense of humor.
My workplace just recently expanded parental leave for all employees... and by that I mean they signed everyone up for extended leave insurance that comes out of the employees' paychecks, whether they use it or not. So I've got that going for me...
I would also argue that people who make the deliberate decision to NOT have children get a couple of extra weeks off now and then - give a chance to spend a small portion of the carbon footprint that they saved by virtue of their decision.
Samantha your descriptions of the beautiful and wondrous gift of childbirth was sickening and characterized childbirth in a less pleasant and magical way.... Thank you, childbirth is not magical it is a process that is necessary and provides us with children that most of us will love unconditionally, and the children make the process worth it for sure... but giving birth is not magical it takes months for women to recover from growing a human being and then pushing them out of their body through a birth canal that is too small for women who have abnormally large birth canals, much less the rest of the female population, the recovery is long and painful and for some the only relief they get is the support of their Significant other, the love they feel towards the child, and for those in practically every other country in the world it is the relief of stress about their continued employment while they are recovering from a process that destroys their body...
It's crazy this situation in the US. In my country a mother gets optionally UP TO 63 days paid medical leave before birth and 63 days MANDATORY paid medical leave after birth. Then one of the parents(either the man or the woman) can get up to 24 months paid Child Raising leave or 36 months for children with disabilities. During this time they get paid each month 85% of the average salary of the last 12 months. Of course there is a lower limit if the person earns the minumum wage or less and also there is a maximum amount they get. Also your job is reserved for when they get back.
I encourage you to learn more about American policies because it sounds like you think American women get no time off which is absurd. Most American employers offer very generous parental leave policies; Samantha's video is explaining how this is not mandated by the government.

You nailed it Samantha!! Women need the time for themselves and their families. The result is a better society!

Apparently you missed the part where she clearly stated it was for men as well!
Tehmina Ahmad
Yes, you're right - sadly the US fail on so many of the parameters we should measure a modern civilized western country on!
GorillaGuerilla the Scandinavian countries are good in many fields and so are the Germans. And l feel blessed to be living here.
Bravo 👏 Ms. Bee! Bravo!!!
Your country is literally on fire though, so...
@@katherinemorelle7115 although I am not pro-life I still see the backwards-ness, thanks. Love from Canada
@@whychoooseausername4763 While yours is only burning metaphorically?
Yeah even with all the junk Australia is going through it seems to be light years better
*I'm wheezing from that popeyes olive oil joke* 🤣
You rock, Sam. This is such an important issue, thanks for talking about it.
Denmark, right to minimum 40 weeks of parental leave, and it can be extended to 52 - 2 of them is for the dad, 18 for the mom, and 32 weeks can be shared between them as they see fit....
@Zuma Zuma
True, and we are working on making more of it exclusive for the father/other primary caregiver....
I was fired while I was giving birth to my first child because I was absent from work too long.
You should get a gun. That'll protect you.
My husband was fired from his job just after our son was born 27 years ago. They claimed he took too much time off to help out caring for our child, even though he then came in extra days to make up the time.
Not to be shallow, but Sam's yellow jacket and shirt is an awesome look
I'd like her what ever she wears.... Yes, im shalliw as well
imagiccion like a bee!!
Don't understand why people hit the thumbs down on videos like this. She talks about nothing but good things. Things people should be able to do just in principle, if nothing else.
Only Sam can give provoke such simultaneous righteous anger and laughter to tears. ❤❤❤
12 weeks of parental leave for Federal employees is a very small percentage of people. Please note that Ivanka Trump is currently a federal employee for some strange reason. So she was able to pass a law that will benefit her and not most Americans.
I'm a man, and I haven't recovered from my last child's birth... and that was 11 years ago.
I love your comments.
New Message
And you won't for at least 7-9 years more.....
Every business should follow your lead!
You are a hero amongst comedians!
Thank you for caring for your employees.
BTW, for Canada, the leave time can be split between the parents, not just for the one who gave birth. It's also for the adoption of a child not just for birthing.
Completely agree!! Let parents bond with their kids and protect their jobs. It’s the right thing to do.
Sam B just put all the other late night hosts to SHAME! Gauntlet thrown!
Jeez, I love this woman! Thanks for fighting for the American family! Go Bernie!! Sam Bee For V.P.!

My extensive Rule 34 research confirms this assertion.
Toxic masculinity has a stranglehold on this country. Until that goes away, I don’t think we can expect much in the “respect humanity” department. Warren 2020
Keep telling those on the right that we have to catch up to the rest of the world in care and policies that are human, and right to do. Instead we fall..to 32nd on infant mortality(something this show remarked about), 64th on how we treat our disabled elderly, and now 31st(down from 28th) in how safe our overall drinking water is.
You don't even want to know what the republican 'voucher programs' have done to our educational rankings! But oddly enough, we've fallen behind in several categories than those sh*$hole countries trump was talking about..and was that the plan?
Yeah but we have the greatest military ever so that's all that matters, Right?
@@ciaranosullivan9352 , and if you look at recent trump tweets twitter.com/realdonaldtrump/status/1213689342272659456?lang=en ,he is bragging about the $2TRILLIONS dollars of taxpayers money spent that was added..just think of the health ins. that would buy? That popeye joke was awesome 🔥🔥🔥🔥
That is fantastic news. Go Samantha, its nice to see a progressive policies being implemented without the government forcing them too.
The US considers "privileges" to be earned a lot of things which a majority of countries view as basic worker's rights: leave, medical...
As long as abortion is legal, pregnancy is a choice. If you can't afford to take time off to have kids, you can't afford to have kids.
That's pretty great. How many people can afford to live without income for even six weeks? I make a comfortable salary, but if I had to go without it for six weeks, I'd be homeless.
@@beatleboy07 That's what your husband's income is for.
the olive oil joke was top notch
It's so funny how the "greatest country in the world" doesn't have these benefits. They are so determined to enforce prolife and yet they don't offer practically help to new mothers.
Only 12wks....for government workers?!!!
We have paid paternal leave in Australia....
With both of our kids my wife got 3 months off, with no pay and she was fired when she was ready to return to work.
Samantha Bee is a boss Queen and that was a power move ❤
FREAKING AWESOME SAM!! Hopefully your contemporaries follow your fantastic example. Looking forward to the next ALS challenge, but instead of ice, you dump amniotic fluid on your head for charity. And also they give their workers time off.
Samantha saying it like it is!
Hi PeeBee! I appreciated the Popeye joke! Olive Oyl 🤣 I love old school television programming.
this competition samantha bee has with other late night talk shows is the best thing to happen to capitalism since costco pizza.
I love her but we all know John Oliver will probably win... Just look at Bob Murray and Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow... John leaves no survivors...
Also yeah that pizza is seriously good for the price and the fact it's a warehouse store...
Children are important to the future. Unless they cost too much, apparently.
How awesome of Sam Bee- well done!!
America, you really ought to stop telling people youre the greatest nation on earth because freedom.
Republican women love not having parental leave, so the best way it to have it, is only for democrats...
So your not interfering with their "traditional values".
You're an idiot
Oh, Samuel is SO wrong. You're a flipping genius. I love it. It's a win-win. And BTW...Samuel only responds this way because his Mom didn't get enough time to bond with him as an infant....it's all part of his insecurities to lash out inappropriately at people he doesn't know if they have a sense of humor.
Birth is insane on your body. Insane. To have to go back after two weeks is cruel.
My friend was just fired from her job for being pregnant. Now she's in danger of losing her home and her children.
I'm crying foul on this. That type of thing is entirely illegal in America.
I watch Sam Bee clips for the raunchy Popeye jokes.

Olive oil...🤣🤣😂😂
YAY! Finally something REAL and Good THANK YOU!!
Love it- way to set the bar!
This shouldn't be optional for companies.
Most countries at a minimum mandate 3 months paid leave.
I just read FULL FRONTAL and clicked on the video🤣🤣
I didn't know she was on the daily show. Great!
My workplace just recently expanded parental leave for all employees... and by that I mean they signed everyone up for extended leave insurance that comes out of the employees' paychecks, whether they use it or not. So I've got that going for me...
1:27, that’s cause Popeye was a real man who cared. 👍🤘
I would also argue that people who make the deliberate decision to NOT have children get a couple of extra weeks off now and then - give a chance to spend a small portion of the carbon footprint that they saved by virtue of their decision.
Where I work recently started offering 4 weeks paid to new mothers and fathers. Even 4 weeks was incredibly helpful.
Tell it like you know something and you do. You go girl!
Hear, hear!
Well done Sam.
She slammed the other late night hosts so hard 😂
"Show me chicken" haha
OLIVE OIL!
Isn't Lily Singh a late night host now? Not the only woman - it's a great thing! Would love if you both lifted each other up :)
Reason Sam is Best Late Night Show Host no 241
Here in Brazil it's 4 months, actually. Not 3.
“BuT SoCiAlIsM”
Especially, Al Sharpton🤣🤪🤣🤪🤣
It's crazy this situation in the US. In my country a mother gets optionally UP TO 63 days paid medical leave before birth and 63 days MANDATORY paid medical leave after birth.
Then one of the parents(either the man or the woman) can get up to 24 months paid Child Raising leave or 36 months for children with
disabilities.
4:10 Shout out to Valerio Zeno en Dennis Storm for making it to the US!
The Netherlands represent 😎
Bernie Sanders wants paid parental leave too
Correction: Suriname does have parental leave. We get several weeks off before giving birth and months after.
We should have strengthened paid family leave long ago.
It's just plain cruel not having paid parental leave. It's torture
SHE'S GREAT I LOVE HER NEW POLICY
Good on you!!!
My tiny company has no policy. I have to quit my job if I want to have a kid. I'm 32. You all hiring any writers over at FullFrontal??
And I thought we were pretty bad in Switzerland with 14 weeks at 80% pay (capped at $200 a day) ... and compared to the rest of Europe indeed we are.
So are all of Full Frontal episodes going to be censored now? Is this cause of the changes in youtube?
Correction! Suriname now has 12 weeks paid parental leave for women and as of this year men will receive 1 week.
A shining example of Gen X cleaning up the mess & selfishness of Baby Boomers. Thank you S Bee!
