I just bought the game, and I’m excited to play. Your instructions have been the most complete. Excellent job, thanks

Thank you so much! That’s super nice to hear. It’s definitely a monster (of course the pun is intended) of a game. I hope you enjoy it!

LOVE the Teaching Tips. I feel like this is something that sets you apart from other board game channels. I don’t know that I’ve seen that anywhere else. And it’s super helpful, in particular for someone like myself and so many others I’m sure, who have kids and a spouse who aren’t gamers and need to be taught carefully otherwise they get frustrated easily and walk away from the table saying it’s too complicated! Thank you again.

Well thanks! I have been off my video game for quite a while.... digital teaching middle school math was a nightmare....
I didn't see too much feed back (pro or con) for the teaching tips until your comment -- but I'm glad you like them! I honestly kinda forgot I did that.... but I think I'll try to include them on the more complicated games, and not so much the more simple games..... maybe that's a good compromise, since they're a little extra work.... Thanks Franz!

    Thanks, Tom!
I like the teaching tips. I think it's a great addition and definitely on brand for your channel. I also think that having them during the playthrough is more helpful, as we are able to have a clear and immediate point of reference, than some of your earlier videos devoted to just the teach by itself.
On to the game. Yes. Dripping with theme! For my regular game group, we are a macabre lot, it was an amazing experience each of the two times we've played so far. (We kept the body parts in piles allowing ourselves to be surprised by the art on the 'skin' side of the tile we chose.)
For sure the length is long and I see how folks could tend towards losing momentum and interest as the game wears on. Our plays were about 2.5 hours at two player including teach and 3.5 hours at three players including teach. I need to set up a couple more playthroughs to try the official Igor variant and the semi-official BGG PnP Prometheus variant to see if either of those hit that elusive sweet spot for game length vs. interest.
One thing you didn't bring up, which I have seen elsewhere but didn't personally think was a problem, was the luck from dice rolls when trying to animate body parts. The one thing about both of the variants is their attempt to lesson the impact of this which I'd be hesitant to implement. I think having to work at and plan for poor dice rolls is integral to the game strategy. This isn't your area of expertise, after all, and through experimentation you're bound to make mistakes. Perfectly on theme!
Again. Thank you so much for the playthrough. Your hard work is very much appreciated!

I'm glad you liked the tips! That feels like a good compromise for me between what I WANT to do, and what I currently CAN do.
And absolutely -- there are tons of players and groups that won't even be phased by the length of the game. I did print out and have read the rules to speed things up a little bit -- but haven't tried them out. I probably should though!
And thanks so much for watching and writing such a nice comment -- I always love hearing from you!

Hi Tom. A great teach indeed. I know a lot of people hate games that hit the 3 hour mark, but that never bothers my friend and I. We play well over that and really enjoy the games. Its truly a gaming day when we get together.
I love your videos and the info and flow is excellent. Never put yourself down with negative comments as your runthroughs are second to none, they are VERY good. Well done sir!!!

Well dang! Thanks so much Steve! What an awesomely nice comment. I appreciate it a lot.
And for sure - different feelings about long games. For some people those are even more exciting because there is usually an awesome pay off for the investment. My attention span is probably shorter than other people.... that’s likely the millennial in me....

Awesome overview and playthrough. For some reason I am just crazy about this game right now. I just got it yesterday, soaking up all the videos I could find about it, looking forward to getting it to the table. I’m trying to find a solo Playthrough , have you found one? I don’t think my little kids can play this one just yet. I love that it’s similar to Lords of Waterdeep, so it seems fairly straightforward in terms of rules and gameplay. But man is it thematic! Hilariously horrifying! Thanks as always and keep up the great work.

It is definitely such a cool game! I"m kind of mad at my own brain because, as I described in the end, I kind of had a "vision" for how I might stream line things AND make it more thematic.... so I haven't really been able to let go of that.
I know it's gross, but I just WISH the bodies would show up and you could pick the parts off of the bodies and really make your own monster.... rather than picking up blood and muscles etc....

Did you find the solo? The publisher has made both a solo mode, as well as a short game setup. You'll find plenty of videos now for those.

Just watching this now, as I purchased the game on the theme, as well. Glad the publisher has added solo, and fast game modes to it. Does seem it will take some playthroughs to get all the upkeep down. Usually, this highly annoys me, yet I find the theme unique enough that I do want to dive into flavor text. We'll see if it has staying power or not.

Thank you!!! And yeah, one of the more thematic games I’ve very played. AND it’s a cool theme. So that makes it extra fun.

I know this is 2 years later but did you ever just get to play the game with someone else. I think it's a good game but is a lot of record keeping when trying to play as 2 people and video. And the game would flow better if you were just playing with others. Just wondering if you ever got the chance.

    • @TomTeachesGames
      @TomTeachesGames  3 ปีที่แล้ว

I never did..... I just ended up selling it. Any time I had other people around, it was just way too long to grab anyone's attention.... so I just figured I'd give it a better home than I could provide it.
BUT, I appreciate what you're saying. I do need to keep that in perspective (that playing alone, as two players, while recording) can definitely distort my perception of flow and time, etc.

I've been under the weather lately, so I didn't keep notes on mistakes on the way through - which saves me a lot of typing at this point. Mostly just things with numbers of cubes (there were a couple of times in the final turn where you said "four cubes" and actually picked up three, or someone had 13 bones for a while) and I'm not sure you twiddled the dials and applied the consequences correctly every time, but I'm not inclined to go back and check either - it does come across as a lot of book-keeping for the theme.
Overall, "thematic, but a bit fiddly" seems like a fair summary...

I’m so sorry to hear you haven’t been feeling well! Your presence has definitely been missed....
And I can only imagine how many cube mistakes I was making. Those things drive me CRAZY. But welcome back! So glad to hear from you and I’m glad you’re doing well!

Great tutorial. I've played through the game once but the rulebook seemed vague. I'm not sure if it would work well but perhaps by just completing the build a part side and omitting the other side of the card would cut back on the lengthy game time, after all I'm sure we all bought the game to create LIFE !!!! IT'S ALIVE... ALIVE!!!!!

What a monster! And that's just the run time.
Same as you, I really love the theme and the look of it all. So tempted just to get it to play with my partner (who loves cemeteries and Paris), but I think your final thoughts were a good summary of why that might not be best. Both the fiddly cubes and the sparse narrative (not quite sure how many cards there are, but you would seem to learn what most of the options are pretty quickly) are a concern. Still, will consider.
The way things turned out was interesting. I guess just going for maximum monster has its downsides.
As for the teaching tips, I wasn't so invested in them. One thing I noticed was that they (by design), come up on screen when you are explaining something. That makes it hard to take both the explanation and the tip in at once (whereas most of your annotations fit neatly into the flow). Then again, those who needed them could just pause if necessary.

      Thanks for your comment!
And yeah, that game is a lot longer than my friends would be willing to spend... I know there’s an official variant to shorten it, but I’m not currently feeling super psyched to try it out.
And thanks about what you said about the teaching tips. What you said is 100% something I’m concerned about. If someone is trying to learn the game I imagine it’s super annoying.

@@TomTeachesGames We tried the short version last night -- it still lasted a while, but ended 10 minutes before fireworks, so that worked out. Basically it has four less turns, but you start with an arm and a leg (also a couple more rules like extra rerolls). Can't really compare yet, but I liked it.
