I have been banging my head against a wall with a finicky reverse gear on my 96 sportsman. I've done all the adjustments on the reverse shifter rods and periodically I can't get into reverse without a bunch of finaggling the shifter. Now I will take the shifter apart and see if maybe I have the same situation or a bent rod in there. Hope this puts this issue to bed. Thanks.

Great video, I just wish you showed the shifter going back together. I’m about to change my boot and I thought I’d give it a service while I’m at it. Is the housing supposed to be full of oil? My manual says it’s lightly greased.

I took mine apart and it was packed with grease, I have a 2000 Polaris 500. I like the grease versus oil, simply because of the gaskets and o-rings that leak. grease stays.

Well guess I commented a little too soon. You called it a caliper at the end. Woops. Wish mine was that easy. Looking like maybe the bores in the shifter box. Worn oval. The shafts are moving sideways making too much space between them. Then shifter just jamming it all up. Have to take it off and look a little closer

I have the same shifter box as you, but i can’t get it back in reverse. It says R on the speedometer, but it’s in neutral! Any thoughts?

In the service repair manual that says fill the selector box with Polaris 0w 40 All Season synthetic motor oil approximately 1 oz do not overfill too much oil could cause the selector to hydraulic lock be sure the selector box is level when adding oil
