Earlier this morning in India, I received an email from someone telling me about a man named Joseph, who feeds 6,000 birds every single day on his rooftop in Chennai, India.
As we were heading to Chennai to conclude our 10-day India road trip, our first stop upon arrival was Joseph's house, where I made this spontaneous video about his life story.
In 2004, the state of Tamil Nadu was crushed by a massive tsunami that killed 230,000 people in total. In the aftermath of this natural disaster, a few parakeets showed up on Joseph's rooftop. He would feed them white rice, and they would keep coming back every day. Word spread among the bird community, and now thousands show up every morning & evening to get fed.
Joseph pays $35 USD out of pocket every day to buy 75 kilograms of rice, which he carefully lays out in small piles for the birds to eat. He hasn't missed a day in 15 years. Now that's what I call dedication!
This man truly has a heart of gold. I can only imagine how many more parakeets will be there the next time I stop by :)

What an incredibly kind hearted person he is! When I visited India, I was amazed by the kindness and generosity of the average Indian, compared to the average european. Even though the average Indian doesn’t have much, they still give with an open-heart. It’s things like these that make me fall in love with India. Thank you for sharing, Drew! My Mother also taught me to feed Birds,Cows and Dogs everyday. Eventhough we do not have any pets but we still feed around 40 birds,10 cows and 4 dogs everyday .

We have the same birds in germany 😁 They like it here because of the mild weather in some citys near lakes. Every day two parrots come to our garden to eat with the other birds 😊

Although it's nothing in comparison to what he is doing, I feed 10 - 20 birds per day myself. He is an incredible man and I am in love with what he is doing, but what is this baffling camera technician job he has that let's him earn roughly Rs 20 lakhs a year! 🤯🤪😱

I think it's because pigeons can carry diseases . And to prevent the spread of a disease, feeding pigeons is not allowed. (I do it sometimes tho lol)
