I worked for Valve a long time ago on Day of Defeat and they responded to us level designers the same as Linus describes how they responded to his (and others) issues. They really are a great company. It's Gabe Newell more than anything else. When he leaves, I hope his spirit remains.

Valve has always been very open with their audience and accepting of criticisms other hardware and software devs would shy back from. Point of interest - Streaming to the steam deck is fine but using the computer to setup (ie installing the game, booting the PC if its off ect) would be cheating. You should be able to control your PC's steam install from the deck.

Regarding the fast update cycle, it's important to consider that unlike other "firmware", SteamOS consists of many different parts developed by different teams all across the world. Even just Proton itself is a collection of several projects developed and updated independently - some with Valve's involvement, most without. More than 1800 individual developers contributed to Proton over the last 28 years. And the open source nature of the thing means that there are always individuals working on bits and bops they personally care about, that ultimately benefit the whole project in some way, but would probably never be high priority in a centralized development model.

30% cut on steam is only until some number of games sold. I can't remember the numbers but it's 30, then something (18?) , then 12% so on par with epic. What I find remarkable is Valve’s commitment to hardware development. I have primarily thought of them as a software company, game developer & portal for buying other peoples games. Sure there’s been the Steam controller, Steam link, Valve Index, but those were mostly niche products. With the Steam Deck they’re going head on into mass consumer electronics. The competition now is Nintendo, Sony & XBox, but with the confidence that they have differentiated themselves sufficiently to succeed in the marketplace. So far the sales are confirming their bet. Bravo!

Look at all the USELESS features companies like google, facebook and microsoft add to their product, like youtube removing dislikes or moving the description for no reason?
Its because theyre trying to please shareholders with random actions no one wants showing them that theyre actually working on stuff when its nothing of substance.
Open source is different because, well, why fix whats not broken? why waste anyones time doing something that will only make the software worse/different?
Theres no point, no incentive to do anything like that, the incentive is to be efficient as possible while ensuring the product is liked and fills its needs.

Huh? Nintendo is a company garnered towards children. Their target demographic is 8 to 12 year olds (not a knock, go read Nintendo's mission statement). Nintendo is a closed ecosystem in which you must buy their hardware to play their software. They make dedicated software for their hardware on top of third party games. Nintendo is valued at $95 billion vs Valve's $12 billion. The switch alone has sold more than 103 million units. Steam only has 120 million users (that includes dead/double accounts). Nintendo hasn't missed the boat on anything gaming related since the late '80s early '90s lol. They know exactly what they're doing. What people don't seem to understand is that Nintendo does not compete with Valve, Sony, or Microsoft. Same way as horror movies don't directly compete with children's films. What I really like about the Steam Deck is that I can pick up and go, so like play on my desktop PC, finish with that and pick up on the go on the Steam Deck, for me I don't think that's ever been done before and mainly because of the games library being the same on the PC and the Steam Deck, all other mobile platforms tend to have it where you have to buy the game again, assuming the game is even on both platforms, with the Deck, that's not an issue, the library is the same at home and on the Deck.
Longer term it gets even better, imagine as the Steam Deck 2 and 3 are released, unlike other consoles where you tend to start with nothing, the Steam Deck you have access to all the games you've bought on the first Deck or on the PC and better yet, unlike consoles where when you get a remaster, they tend to charge you for it, as new Decks are released with better specs, most games are enhanced for it because of how games are designed to scale on the PC, it's like getting a remaster of a lot of games as the hardware specs get better with each Steam Decks and it's free.
In value terms, the Steam Deck wipes the floor with other platforms and longer term that could be more the case as you take your library with you as you upgrade.
With that said, there are a few things Valve needs to work on, the polish of SteamOS, ease of use, especially with auto config settings for games to appeal to console gamers and they also need to get most games to just work on it, if they do all that, the Steam Deck could be a game changer for PC and console gamers.

Having your steam library on the go in such a portable form factor is already amazing - and then adding on top of that the ability to retain progress between your PC and Deck via cloud save, down to the exact moment in time you quit playing? @@prodj.mixapeofficial6431 Microsoft needs to be afraid because PC gaming is half the reason their OS is still alive. Once the Steam Deck shows Linux to be outperforming Windows, performance wise, gamers are going to switch. Even if only 20% of gamers switched to Linux, imagine the level of panic Microsoft will have. Let’s not forget that when Valve announced their intents to support Linux, Microsoft employees showed up at Valve headquarters the next day.
With the emergence of Windows 11, the increased requirements for PC hardware is nothing insignificant. Linux only requires a fraction to run.
My point is that if Valve can make Linux, at the very least for gaming, a viable option, people are going to switch. It won’t be all at once. May start as 5%, 10%, then 20%, etc. Lots of people switch to a Linux OS for a lot of different reasons; but they all eventually came to the same conclusion; they don’t like Windows and wouldn’t use it “if they could play games”. A lot of Linux users, today, would love to abandon Windows, but games. Put game compatibility into the Linux experience and watch the number of people changing.

When the goals for the Steam Deck day 1 launch was announced, I knew that they were some lofty goals. I figured they wouldn't reach all of the goals, because a lot of it is in the hands of another company (i.e. game devs and game publishers working with Valve on their anti-cheat). So, to that end, I thought the SD would wind up being considered a bust. However, it looks like they (as individuals and as a company) really do care about what they're trying to accomplish with the SD.
Also, I have another perspective when it comes to games. You will never be able to play X console on Y console. With the SD, on the other hand, it sounds like Valve/Steam aren't just going to throw their hands up and stop at wherever the current playable games state is. Which means that games that aren't playable, or are barely playable, will hopefully be very playable at some point.
Depending on how well SD does, I'm sure they're will be other iterations in the years to come. However, that's just dealing with the hardware side of things. Games are something where the state of playability (SoP) can evolve and change over the coarse of time. Even if we're into an era of SD Gen 3, the SoP of games will still be changing, making the current SD relevant for years to come. Other consoles are only relevant until maybe a year into their successors release.

Honestly, the fact that I can use Steam Play if I just want to play a game like Elden Ring or Forza from my bed makes the Steam Deck worth it.
Yes.. it would be cheaper just using my phone and buying a Razer Kishii (or whatever it’s called) but the fact that it’s also a Computer means I can comfortably play games NATIVELY on the Device so long as it’s supported… it’s a win/win in my opinion.
Steam Deck is to PCs what Quest 2 is for VR Headsets, it’s a product laser focused on brining in more users into the entire space while also still being a great, affordable and easy to use product… for so long Valve has been sitting doing nothing for so long but it’s clear why that was, they’re preparing change the PC Marketplace and bring fierce competition.

On my Dell Inspiron i5 gaming I used to be able to play Dragon Age and Doom. Close the lid. It goes to sleep. Come back 1 or 2 days later and open it up and continue playing after about 3 to 4 seconds of wait time. Subsequent updates made the game crash but for a little while i was in the future.

It's be nice if the Steam Link could be used as a dock for the Steam Deck, but I guess charging would not be an option without power pass-through, but I guess we could plug in charger and just cast to the Steam Link.

Linus while i respect your decision to use the steam deck as your only PC. It is not really for that, it uses a rather newish technology (that being immutability) to make sure that the software that comes from valve itself is controlled. It makes it harder to install traditional packages on your own so that it is less prone to breaking. Instead it uses flatpaks which are much more sandboxed and can't break your system. Personally i would be fine with it but not sure about anyone else.

I just got a steam deck and I gotta say, yes, I have an amazing gaming PC at home but the ability to bring the steam deck to my friends house, plug it into their TV and just be good to go... Is unrivaled. I guess I coooould take my desktop over there, or spend 2000 on a gaming laptop worth a couple cents, but having this steam deck is great. I LOVE bringing it to my non PC gaming friends house and playing split screen games. COD zombies, unraveled 2, it takes two, chicken horse, great games to play with friends and they all run great. I'm so happy with my purchase. The steam deck is by far the most interesting piece of hardware I own and I have a lot of gear. I am just so impressed with it's functionality. I also have emulators installed and lots of Nintendo games on the deck.

Currently experiencing issues playing two player games on the emulators but that could a simple settings issue. I have two Xbox controllers paired via Bluetooth but for some reason only one controller controls both characters. It's odd. Haven't looked into it too much yet.

I haven't been able to get/try a steam deck however I think the main advantage of it is the game selection and quality. To this day I regret buying a switch not only is the price not justified for the performance (especially compared to the Deck) but the selection outside of the Nintendo titles absolutely suck not to mention sales are non existent.

I can't wait to get one of those, and then install a few VR games on it, and stream directly to my Quest 2 headset. It really feels like it's going to be a game changer, using those 2 together. For $1000 you would literally be able to play *thousands* of VR games without wires. Sure the Deck has to be somewhere around you, but it's still PCVR "without a PC". 2 portable devices, connected to a single wifi, gives you so much possibilities. Can you imagine, portable HalfLife: Alyx? Holy shit.

I'll absolutely, 100% use the remote play feature of the Steam Deck every now and then. I mean, I'll most likely even use Stadia to play Destiny, as that is a free title, or possibly even buy other games on Stadia, as the video decoding of a stream ought to use far less battery than native rendering.
I've already got an Nvidia shield, and in-network streaming is *fantastic* nowadays. It's *almost* indistinguishable from native gameplay. Cloud gaming is 'ok', but Stadia in particular suffers from an incredibly poor bitrate - but at 720 or 800p, I really don't think it'll degrade the experience by that much.
I'm a Q1 order, and I'm waiting patiently, wishing that I'll be in this Mondays allotment, but either way I'll have mine soon™
