I'm pretty convinced that Valve is only able to deliver quality like this because they're a private company. No shareholders to please, no strict profit goals to meet. They are content to deliver high quality even if it shaves down on their own margins a little bit. Had they been a public company, this would be nowhere near as good as it is. Good job Valve.

@@UNSCPILOT Well, since Steam Deck is a PC and most emulators have native Linux versions, the device can emulate almost every Nintendo platform from NES, SNES, N64, GameCube, Wii, GameBoy, GBC, GBA, DS, 3DS and finally the Switch. That's almost every console/handheld generation for the past 3 decades. CEMU, which is a Wii U emulator, is going open-source so the chances of a Linux version is very high. Because of that, the Steam Deck now has the very potential to emulate all Nintendo platforms, and that's not even including PlayStation, Sega, Atari and even Xbox. I think including the Switch in the size/weight comparison would have been REALLY helpful. Yes, I know it's not a 'competitor' to the Deck to the same extent that the other consoles are (although as you said in the LTT video, even their comparison as competitors is limited).
But as a handheld gaming device, the Switch is far more ubiquitous. The Switch is something that I (and many others) have a tangible, real understanding of its size and weight; hence comparing it would be far more useful in helping us visualise the size/weight of the Deck. Rather than just comparing it to a bunch of things which most people have also never held/seen IRL.

There's a sub-category of portability that the Switch finally tapped into. All of the previous consoles like the PSP/Vita and xDS were designed for leaving your house. They were truly miniature and could all easily fit into a pocket. When the Switch came along, it felt big and clunky at first but it appealed to people who just wanted the ease of an instant-on gaming device that they could carry from room to room. And, if they felt like it, they could also stuff it into a backpack and take it on a trip.

It's a mix. The shoulder buttons are Xbox and so are the ABXY buttons on the right. The joysticks are a mix of PS and Xbox since neither of them have both sticks up high. PS has the sticks equal to each other (but lower) while Xbox has its left thumbstick up high, which is why I called it a mix. Honestly pretty smart move by Valve I think everyone will feel at home with the layout.
It obviously has some Steam Controller influence as well for moving the mouse.

    * For remote play, going to bed while your PC does the work could be much better than with a phone.

@@deadering I'm hoping :) although I see there being an end goal that we are not aware of. Each one of these hardware releases from Valve, is simply a proof of concept to a far grander plan. I just wonder, why not both? My expectoration is that there will not be a steam deck 2.0, even if it is just updating the hardware.

@@Flashfake I think the reason why Valve has not made a V2 of the Steam Controller is because they lost a patent lawsuit which contributed to the eventual discontinuation of the Steam Controller, though it was discontinued before the lawsuit.

It's a no brainer for people like myself who want to upgrade from iPad gaming but don't own a TV , computer or want a big desktop in their room. As a 50 year old that was impressed by the LED battery operated hand held gaming gadgets of the eighties . I feel like i have time travelled . It's on the same level as hoverboards.

Look, it isn't a laughable ripoff that could literally buy you a pre-built computer.
