This is set in the Roaring Twenties, a few years before the stock market crash.
As the other commentors say its before that, but Idont think you are entirely wrong. Considering he is a kid, this must be in the aftermath of ww1, a sort of depression of its own

This is during the times of the 1920s to 30s. It was sometimes like this.
I love how everything in this short is in muted, solemn colors except Mitzi, who is vibrant and warm, especially compared to a very greyscale-like Atlas. It really helps emphasize how Mitzi is a ray of sunshine in Rocky's rough life. Little touches like this just prove how talented these animators and directors are.
I know he lives with his aunt at one point when he was a child but what about his real parents?

I love the small detail possibly hinting at Mitzi’s husband being dead at 2:12 the fact that he’s completely grey while she’s full of a bunch of color

Love how they're keeping the characters' skeleton sketches. It emphasizes how this setting is a lot more "scraping by" and how not every character is able to pay the bills.
That and it has it in the style of old 1920's-80's hand drawn animation where if you look into animation back then you can sometimes see the Skeleton there.
someone who worked on this actually mentioned that with the way toon boom (their animation program) worked, they couldn’t actually “keep” the sketches, so they actually manually drew them back in on top of the clean lines! the dedication for this show is incredible
there was a scene like that in helluva boss too, idk if it was on purpose or not but it was definitely cool

Full disclosure. The first time I saw that, I thought it was unintentional, but nope. They did it deliberately to emulate the hand drawn feel of the pre-digital age of cartoons.

My favorite part of this teaser is finally seeing a glimpse of (not ghost) Atlas in the animation. He's in the web comic so sparingly too, you know it's a big deal when Tracy puts him into a scene.

Never read the books but if it's supposed to be adapting that then maybe but if not you're at a 99.99% chance of overhyping this show almost exclusively based on the animation quality which seems to be the standard when judging animated media rather then the supporting role it should be (I was talking about TH-cam projects exclusively)

Poor Rocky. I've only known about this boy for a few months and already my heart melts for him. Bless Mitzi for giving him a job.
Lackadaisy inspired me to write my own comic about a young cynical black-footed cat serial killer named Jenni Graves, who's after her father's killer and her more cheerful cheetah partner, Marley Dash. If Lackadaisy is accepting character ideas and submissions, I would be more than happy to give them Jenni and Marley, free of charge! Jenni was inspired by Mordecai whilst Marley was inspired by Rocky.

Jen escapes her orphanage home with Marley Dash and they are now murdering mob bosses on the search for Jenni's father's killer.

As a fan of any truly good animated films, I would LOVE for this show to be as popular as Hazbin Hotel, or The Amazing Digital Circus
It's... honestly kinda surreal to see Rocky with such a placid, not-at-all crazed smile on his face. Really emphasizes just how much his time with Lackadaisy changes him.
Somewhat, from what we see in the comics it does seem like Rocky has been crazed for a while, before working at Lackadaisy and such. It seems more that his craziness is able to flourish a bit more in his current employment, but we‘ll see. Other than the letters to Freckle and some scattered conversations we don’t know much about pre-Lackadaisy Rocky, which makes this even more exciting!
@@FlowerPower0442 I always got the feeling more that Rocky's exuberance was always a side of him he used moreso to hide a lot of sadness. He does actually enjoy working for Lackadaisy but his overly exuberant personality during the comic is moreso cause he knows the buisness isn't doing good and doesn't want it to go away as he really doesn't have anywhere to go.
Rocky's mom is dead, his aunt (Freckles mom) kicked him out of her house and doesn't like him, and his dad is implied to of ran off somewhere and doesn't want him either. Poor dude has literally nowhere to go.
@@WeaverOfStars Oh absolutely! His usual over the top behaviour is certainly a way to hide a lot of complex internal sadness. He‘s had a rough go of life, and Lackadaisy honestly seems like the last thing he has. He clings to it with all he‘s got, and essentially obsesses over Mitzi as the one person who is still giving him a chance (and hasn’t seemed to push him away previously, only accepted him). He‘s been through a lot, so I guess maybe calling him crazy for his covering demeanour wasn’t the best choice of words on my part lol. He‘s just troubled and trying to overcompensate to an extreme degree for it. Well, except until he got his skull cracked by the front bumper of a hearse. He is absolutely nuts after that.
Even as a short animation, the amount of emotions is almost overwhelming.

I know this would be lost in the vast sea of comments, but this series skyrocketed and now almost 1.5 million dollars as of this moment, amazing what great writing and animation can get this to be where it’s at, and let’s not forget about the voice actors and actresses, they made the characters feel more alive and well written and have a great sense of humor, amazing how something like a regular comic stories that was released almost two decades ago and now have a fan base that loves it, I didn’t read any of the comics yet but I am thinking about it but it’s not stopping me from enjoying this beautiful masterpiece of animation, may this series have many more years of success, and let the people who are working on this, thank you, thank you for making all of this happen, and this concludes my opinion, may everyone have a great day or night, and once again, thank you

I’ll be honest I LOVE how you showed Atlas. Even though he’s there, he’s still quiet and looks like he’s hiding a few secrets in him, just as how it’s shown every time in the comic! I love it! Hopefully production goes wonderfully for you all!
I also love how he's still in greyscale even though everything else is in color
Now that you point it out, most of the scenery is greyscale besides Rocky and Mitzi, and some of the lighting. Really makes them stand out.
He also doesn't so much as glance at Rocky, compared to Mitzi giving him her full attention.

The way Mitzi reached out to Rocky. I think that’s one of the reasons why he developed feelings (in his own way) for her.
During this time period you have to be lucky enough to get a job because in The Great Depression getting a job is extremely difficult.

@@lexusdriver1963the great depression hadn't started yet, but now that i think about it things are certainly gonna keep getting worse for those characters, the succession of prohibition, depression, and ww2 sounds like a terrible combo, let's hope they make it to the 50's alive.
She was probably the first person in a long time to speak with encouragement and appreciation to him and wilfully use his services, so no wonder he became attached and devoted to her - plus, she was pretty hot, so that's another reason.
the art style, the soundtrack, the coloring, all of this combines very well the atmosphere of the moment in which the characters find themselves. Lackadaisy has a very promising future, with a unique and striking style. I'm happy to see what a simple comic that started in 2006 is becoming.
To be honest, I'm glad that enough attention will be paid to Rocky and his backstory will be told to us, because I myself was in some way looking for a better life. Show Rocky's optimism, how he does not give up no matter what, and even if he is kicked out of the next shelter with a powerful kick, he gets up, smiles and goes forward. How does he do it? How does he have the strength to smile despite what happened to him? It should be a good story!

Looks like we're really gonna see Rocky's backstory proper, the depth of his character and it looks like his relationship with Mitzi is A LOT deeper than originally expected. Seems she's one of the two mother figures in his life after his own mother's unfortunate passing: his aunt Nina being the more stern one teaching him responsibility (if he's even capable of learning any) and Mitzi being the warmer one providing him with support. Also, the animation continues to be AMAZING. Keep it up Tracy, Fable, Michael, Ashe, SungWon, Bel, Lisa, everyone!
Whatever happened to make Mina kick him out, it must have been BAD when you consider the amount of patience it must have taken to raise him. Perhaps it had something to do with Freckle's father...
I hope we get a reunion between Rocky and Freckle, the first meeting between Ivy and Rocky, and how Rocky ended up stepping in to fill Mordecai's shoes.
Also I wonder how old Rocky is in this trailer? 19?
I'm not sure she's a mother figure. I think Rocky is absolutely, head over heels, completely in love with her.

It also makes sense that he'd be a little crazy -- he was clearly a manic child in a time when people frowned upon anyone outside of cultural norms -- and after finally getting a one-in-a-million chance to pursue his dreams, only to find that chance slip away with the Speakeasy, must have been maddening. So he ends up bootlegging -- even though he's not good at it -- which makes him even more crazy because he has to desperately cling to that dream and it's putting his life in danger.
He's way more complex than at first glance.
The pilot set the bar pretty high. Here's to hoping it lives up to the hype! 🍻

The tone differences between this calm teaser and the pilot's chaotic energy kinda shows how much range this show would have.
It's such a cute detail that there was no sun before that, but as soon as Mitzi approached Rocky, the sun appeared, and the sad colors became brighter. It looks so inspiring and beautiful, like a very small detail, but how it warms the heart 💕

@@FoxGoesSquee You don't have to immediately "get" the metaphors/symbolism if you want to become an animator :) details tend to become more apparent after watching it more than once anyway
@@FoxGoesSqueeoh, don't think it like that, usually only people that have trained eyes (and by trained, I mean really trained) can notice those details on the first watches. I mean, I have been studying animation for like 2 years, and I didn't notice that detail as well, so, really, no reason to think that.

Disney, & all that it owns stocks on, are dying dinosaurs who're commiting the seppuku that is wokeness & political correctness.
Plus, the truth about them being involved with sex/child trafficking, the C_A's Operation Monarch project, and subliminal occultic messaging is coming to light more so than ever.
At this point in time, Lackadaisies animation is an absolute breath of fresh air for independent animation in total. I look forward to viewing how this'll unfold.
Also has the potential to be a lot more mature and adult-oriented than anything by Disney (there is blood shown, people (cats?) can die on screen, there are guns) while still having a style similar to Disney. All done 100% independently without a studio canning it for no reason or interfering to make it more in line with the trends or demographic. This is gonna be gold.

@@thepoleontheroadhing is, in my mind it shouldn't be in line with the current demographic or trends. We're talking about the 1920's, a VERY different time compared to now, and as such it should be in line with how things were back then.
@CipherRage-tp5ql yeah it seems Disney has gone down hill in the last couple of years but at least we have creators who are willing to still make these kind of original things.
I don't have money to give to the project but I really hope they meet their goal. Lackadaisy is so good.

Absolutely breathtaking, you can just feel the pre-great depression atmosphere, with rocky still holding onto his hope. We saw that alot in the pilot. Its been a long time coming, so glad to see lackadaisy getting the respect and admiration it deserved long ago!!

I've rewatched this several times, and I always wonder how Rocky managed to get kicked out of the car so quickly. My best guess so far is that he poetically referred to himself as the f slur in order to humbly call himself a burden on whoever was driving them in a bit of an antiquated way. The driver did not interpret this as the archaic meaning of the word, the driver interpreted this as the f slur.
