- The SEGA CD Model 2 is an attachment I have wanted to get for a while now for my collection and today we're going to attempt to fix one from Ebay. The listing claims it's broken and does not power on, so lets see if we can fix it.

I got a Sega CD Model 2 two years ago and I absolutely LOVE the thing. I had always wanted one also and it's so much fun. The Lunar Games, Shining Force CD, Dune, Terminator, Final Fight CD and so on. When you look at everything that wasn't FMV crap the rest of the library is REALLY good.

You need to complete the setup once it's all fixed. SEGA Genesis II, SEGA CD, SEGA 32X, Sonic and Knuckles, and Sonic Carts.
You forgot the Game Genie to complete the tower of power.
The issue with the 32X is people lose the unique AV cable. Luckily, there are remanufactured ones.
@Michael Skinner I don't have it anymore, but I had the JVC X'Eye and the 32X, I did have Game Genie, Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic 1-3 as well as Spinball.

Man I don't care what anyone says, the Sega CD kicked ass for the time. Yeah it was overly expensive but other than that it had a lot of interesting games on it.

I'm still waiting for a new Sewer Shark release. I got all the others already. Whenever they are on sale they only cost two to three dollars, it's great.
A lot of people blow that fuse with a NES AC power supply.
My mom used to blow a fuse when I played Sega all night.
Didn't know that and I had to check psu information out.
Those NES power supplies have ruined quite a few devices in their day.
Fun fact: Sega CD systems are also Karaoke CDG disc players. Can't remember how to access that but it's in the system menu. Saw it on a friend of mines a few years back.
Brings back so many memories. Some friends got this model for Christmas. I was excited for them, but I was also jealous. About a year later I landed an under the table job at 13 years old. My first major purchase was a used Sega CD Model 1. The first game I purchased was Sonic CD. It blew my mind with the opening sequence, and the futuristic dystopian feeling the levels gave. How they implemented the time travel was cool too. While many of the games were blatant full motion video trash there were many hidden gems to discover. Super Nintendo was the king of that era, but Sega earned their place in the history of gaming.

80 euros is 94 usd, so yeah, he saved a couple bucks and got a video out of it.

Not for a segaCD. Especially after the retro video game price inflation over the last 3-5 months.
It is. I bought a working one for 80 usd. Ebay scalpers have been trying to gouge us fixit guys a lot lately.

@@freddyvidz yeah I'm holding off a bit myself. I've branched off into other stuff to collect. I love doing repairs and mods on retro systems for myself, however ebay scalpers and even goodwill now want to charge you what a working console cost last year for a broken one.

On the sega CD (model 1 and 2) blown fuses are quite common failures

Yeah I've got one that's real special to me that I bought 20 years ago in a lot for $75 it had 30 Sega CD games and 25 Genesis games with the Genesis model one inbox and the Sega CD model two was inbox it reminded me of when I was 11 I grew up poor and my family couldn't afford it and I told myself one day I have one and then one turned into six model twos and three model ones

Nice score! My NES needed a bodgewire as someone had cut IRQ and rejoined it with a bodgewire but didn’t realise they cut the next track over. Clean the 72 pin and all good. And all for $AUD8 from a local thrift store 😄

glad I watched this. I didnt know people were buying these yet. I actually have two genesis 1's and CD 2's and tried to sell them like 10 years ago with a starting bid of $50. didnt even sell. One broke one working too

Just curious, have you ever fixed a Sega CDX? It was a genesis and Sega CD in one system. I heard that those things are a pain in the ass to fix.
I remember toys r us selling those and the nomad on clearance and still couldn't sell them for months. Kinda wish I picked one up

I had a nomad for a few years it was really cool but boy did it burn through batteries if you didn't have the special battery packs.
Of course I needed money and ended up selling it, that was definitely a mistake. Of course in my defense it was years if not decades before they came back into style and became highly sought after.
@@JohnDoe-wq5eu I think they had a power brick or power cord u could get for it but I guess that would make it not a portable system. I sold panzer dragoon saga thinking no one would ever pay over $60 for a used game and I was never going to go through it twice. Now I heard it goes for $900

With the “strength” of th Sega CD library, unlikely to have burned out the laser!
Nice that it was such a simple fix! The metal plate that attaches to the bottom of the genesis when it's attached to a sega cd is a useful thing to have though, without it the Genesis will be a little unstable...
Nice. My system had the exact same issue back in the day, and I replaced the fuse... although with a much kludgier way at the time, sort of clamping it down onto the old fuse. I should probably open it up and fix it properly... but it's also been rolling for 20 years, so go figure!
Also, my experience with the Sega CD (at least the Model 2, never had a Model 1!) and the Saturn are that the lasers are really, really good - far better than the PlayStation, especially with burned media.
How about the virtual boy. I hear the eye piece can disconnect leaving a cycloptic mess.
I beleve there's a ribbon cable inside that becomes disconnected from a board (some type of adhesive that breaks down). I bought two broken VBs years ago. Each had one bad cable. Now I have one working and one with two bad cables. 😁
Mine have that problem. I have to find the courage to attempt a repair.
@@marie-franceFortin Years ago, I found someone that would do the repairs for $30 or so, but I just never got around to sending mine off. Look on Reddit and other similar places.
Ugh I bought 2 just to find out that the link cable to play two players would never release. Luckily I heard u can get the link cable now for Mario tennis. I think u have to do something though to get the game to activate it
I've heard that the gameplay can cause real life health side effects and so I never even wanted to emulate the games. Obviously playing Mario Tennis on a TV is different than playing it on Virtual Boy, but I didn't want to give the console the time of day.
I did the exact same thing this year added a mega cd to my collection it’s big but it looks so good having it next to my other consoles definitely if you are into console collecting a mega cd is a fine addition to anyone’s collection
Just looking at that Sega CD gave me chills. The release of that system was a formative time in my life, and I loved it even though I had to rent it because my family couldn't actually afford one
Shoulda sent you mine but I gutted it and left my mega SG attached to it with the everdrive pro because it still looks badass. Not using the exact power adapter causes so many issues. CD Skipping, games not loading, desync, battery issues and blown fuse. Can’t use any genesis or 32X adapter, has to be the right one for the right model.

Awesome video I've done some sega repair myself I have a Gen 2 but I lost a couple of the screws and I can't seem to find the right ones at the hardware store or ebay any suggestions?
The lasers always work in the model 2 consoles. The issue is the spindle slides down on the shaft and causes the laser to go out of focus or the disc will actually hit the housing and make horrible noises. The model 1 it's usually just the belt that causes the laser to not read a disc because the draw mechanism can't bring the laser head up to the disc to read it properly. Also the capacitors in the model 1 systems and a huge issue. But thankfully they're easy to replace.
I took a gamble with a Sega CD model 1 on Ebay earlier this year. And it worked right off the bat. The auction said untested, so it was a crap shoot. And a while back I got a Sega CDX for less than $200 that the seller said wouldn't play a Genesis cartridge or read discs. Well after cleaning with a q-tip and alcohol. It worked just fine and they go for pretty good money. lol

so, i had TWO sega CD's ; I got one new on clearance for $100, my buddy gave me his old broken one for spare parts after his brother spilled something on his. Played great, played it for about 7 or 8 years, sold it on Ebay WITH the broken one for parts for about $70- in the original box, manuals, purchase reciept...my how things have gone up in value
But yeah, if you find a no-power SegaCD, easiest fix on the planet. Slap a new fuse in and enjoy that puppy.
You should get the game “Adventures of Willy Beamish” definitely worth it on the Sega CD

6:39 just for future videos, change your ISO on your camera so we can actually see in black on black/dark areas like underneath the CD lid. There wasnt enough contrast of colors/better lighting to see comfortably.
Yeah at first I thought I just had my settings too low, turned up my brightness to maximum still awful.

Dracula unleashed is one of my favorite point and click/FMV games!! The ending scene/battle has the best music/score in a game of its type. Enjoy!!!! Great Vid btw......

I just ordered a sega cd yesterday. I hope it works, though it did say it was in working condition. If it doesn’t, I’ll look back at this video to see if that’s the case. This was really cool btw
Since then I finally got a fully assembled tower of power with a 3bp modded model 2 genesis & it looks great on my zenith CRT. I’m currently trying to fix a Sony PVM so that I can use my Scart cable for it, along with my newly acquired North American Sega Saturn. It’s unfortunate how not many people have checked the Saturn library because it’s quite enjoyable

I'm a big fan of resurrecting dead Segas from eBay - I hate seeing any dead electronic, especially ones I love.

I love the model 2 Sega CD. I have the extended that attaches to it so you can hook up the Model 1 Genesis to it, which is my preferred setup for this combo. Gen 2 isnt the premiere system in terms of visuals and sound.
it's specifically the early Model 2s and even late Model 1s that have the bad sound.
I also bought one on eBay not working but I hooked it up and it worked just fine. Turns out the seller didn’t know it had a separate power supply to the main system 😂

A Sega CD was given to us by a friend, & it had a problem turning on. It got like that from being slammed on all the time by that friend. One of the games we tried was The Terminator. Eventually, after many tries, it turned on. But that was it. It just happened to turn on that time. Guess it was like a hit-&-miss kind of thing. Really like your shirt by the way! 👍🙂
I love the SEGA CD version of The Terminator but the game is hard, I died multiple times because I keep getting killed by the HK-Tank.
Other than getting killed by the HK-Tank multiple times in the game I love the cutscenes and the music.
Brasso wadding works great on glossy plastic as long as the scratches aren't too deep.
Also with the save battery you can leave the system on for a few hours and it'll recharge it after a while. But you can also buy a new rechargeable battery for it.
Sometimes a blown fuse can be a blessing. The fuse blows in 1994 and someone puts its in storage for 26yrs waiting for us to come by
I still have my OG sega 2 and sega CD my family got when i was a kid. Still works great.
Recently purchased a JVC X-EYE console. It powers on and genesis side works fine but the disc side doesn't spin. Only shudders slightly when turned on. Would you be interested in doing a teardown/ repair for your podcast?
bought a sega cd a couple months ago which unfortunately also had a dead fuse. Mine was the more common board that had the fuse on the bottom rather than a through hole like yours, luckily I was able to replace it and got power again on it. Then I had another issue with the limit switch, unfortunately it was bent backwards so the laser would never know when it was in the center. Fortunately I was able to fix this by stuffing a heat shrinking tube behind it which keeps it in place. with all that work I was finally able to get it working normally, If you ever plan on getting a sega cd make sure you at least have some basic soldering experience. These guys are fragile units.

Have a gen 1. Took a few minutes to get working after not being used for many years. Seemed like it needed to warm up or something. Managed to play Lunar on it.
I bought a clean N64 from Ebay and it would give me a black screen about half the time I would turn it on. Turns out the jumper pack was going bad I got a replacement and it now works great.
Soldering has been good to me with retro console fixing... this honestly seems doable! I was thinking it would be much more in depth

you can buy them anywhere... local hardware store or automative store, local "radioshack like" store, ebay, amazon....lots of places
You can find them anywhere, what you’re looking for depends on what you’re looking to repair. If it’s through hole like this board, then you’re looking at something in the 25-90w range. Many repairers recommend a station, I’ve found a standard plug in iron and stand has done me well. (Been a service tech) You want a 1-3mm tip, conical is ok, but a flat angled one wll give you better contact. The bent tip ones are also useful. Anything bigger just makes it hard to access. And too some of the small ones 1mm end can be a bit fine for the bigger jobs. Pays to have a range of tips, 2-3 they don’t cost a lot. Solder sucker, solder wick, .7mm solder with rosen flux core. A stand for it so you don’t burn stuff. And tip cleaner, the steel wool ones are good, so are the wet sponge. If you’re getting into surface mount stuff then you’ll need decent flux as well. Out of China you’re looking at about $40-50USD as a basic starting point. The power of the iron will dictater what you can do with it, lower powered is find for most situations, if you have to get a heat sink off, then it can be a bit of a hassle.

I often find the contacts give me the most issues, some IPA and cotton swabs usually get me up and running.
If that's an early full-board model 2 Genny, you should do the mega amp mod.
Just wondering how you captured the sega cd . I have mine hooked up to an elgato hd and it doesn’t want to work .
I bought a "broken" Sega CD as well, the only thing wrong with it was the 4 rubber shock mounts was basically mush which caused the CD to rub against the case.
I sold my megadrive 2 with 12 cartridge games and two sega mega cd II's for $15 in 2009. Now just the megadrive 2 console is $80 by itself.
Question for you. Hoping you or someone might be able to help. I just got back a Model 2 Sega Cd back from a mod/repair guy and he got everything up and running through capacitor replacement, cleaning, and even replaced the drive. I am only running into one issues since getting it back. All my games work on the system except one odd exception. Terminator won’t play the in game music. Just the Sound Effects. I have no idea why this is. The disk is in great shape. It works and plays on my Model 1 Sega Cd with both the Model 1 Genesis and a Mega SG. I tried both the Model 1 Genesis and the Mega SG with the Model 2 Sega Cd and it will not play the music from Terminator. If anyone knows why this might be, the help would be great.
Hey! I have a JVC ex-eye, the sega cd part doesn't spin the disk. The sega genesis part works, but I believe the spinner motor is dead. Do you know what I could do to fix it? When I put the CD in, it says put a disk in the tray
What capture method did you use on your computer?
The piece that holds the disc keeps falling off on mine. I have to be careful with it and keep opening and closing it to get the disc to spin without hitting.
I managed to get a Sega 32x for my SMDII in the UK I loved the Star Wars game I had and Virtual Fighter. I did have a boxing game for it as well that was it but didn't get the chance to buy Sega CD

I absolutely love these videos and they always interest me. While I am a tech guy, I never got into soddering or anything like that, I was always to afraid to permanently break something, but I these videos are just nice relaxing things to watch while always learning a thing or two.
How did you get the screen to show up on a laptop or is that a flat screen tv with a keyboard in front of it?
