you literally just described the majority of the good metal bands. putting down a genre by elevating your favorite band out of it is something a 15 year old with limited experience in the genre would do
IMO he didn't put down metal just expressed that Opeth taps into other genres of music as do many metal bands.... that's one of the beauties of metal@@hazardeur
Always great to watch someones first Opeth and especially Drapery Falls reaction. Oh, and yes they are from Sweden. Other of their songs I recommend: Ghost of Perdition, Harlequin Forest, Windowpane, Burden, The Lotus Eater, Sorceress, Face of Melinda, Allting Tar Slut, and the song §1 from their upcoming album.
Mikael is a baritone, with silky soulful cleans, and a rich and brutal growls. Although Opeth is considered metal, they aren’t the typical metal band as they have many elements to their music (folk, jazz, hard rock, prog rock, death/black) and aren’t reliant on guitar riff based 4/4 tempos. They really are on a genre of their own especially 20-25 years ago where no one was doing this type of music. Now you have many bands that were inspired by them. I would definitely recommend listening to a studio album/song especially if it’s your first exposure to a band to get a feel before jumping into their live performances. You should definitely check out more of their stuff I can tell you would like. Cool review/reaction.
My favorite band🙌 Hope you have time to check out more. They have an insanely epic catalog to explore. Blackwater Park is my fav song, but Harlequin Forest, The Moor, Demon of the Fall...all top choices🤘🧝♂
The whole Red Rocks concert is amazing to view and listen to. That's from 2017, and Mikael's vocals there sound lower and more clear too. I'd be cool to see you react and deconstruct the whole perfomance from different songs. Either Ghost Of Perdition or Heir Apparent for the growl aspect.
I maintain they're one of the best metal intro bands. My mom loved 'em my 14 year old gf loved 'em; all my homies love Opeth. The structures aren't radio cookie cutter, the musicians are all dope, and Mikael Åkerfeldt is big man. Sounds like a demon AND an angel. I'm not [whatever] enough to properly describe it but they just feel I dunno it's very captivating like a story it's not really "gothic" but there's an "operatic" [not the genre, the synonym for extravagant] I guess "atmosphere" that feels kind of frozen in time. It's a specific vibe in a lot of their music and it's not even my _favorite_ "mood" but they do it well enough, like not just fitting it over radio structures but actually exploring it, that it really sticks out. And again when they're that dope it's hard not to love. I lean more into tech-y stuff, but Opeth is, I dunno, a definitive package. They've got a thing, and it's heccing dope. What I'm about to say is objectively wrong on numerous counts; but it's like what if a [dope] 70's guitarist was stuck in a black [like dark black] mansion at 8:39PM in mid fall [so it's like dark sunset like almost black but a dim glow of red on the horizon], but a demon and an angel are fighting in the foyer; and you showed up for a house showing for the place next door or whatever and you stopped by to say hi to the neighbors, but there was a heavy fog and now for some reason you're lightheaded and everything is spinning but slowly like just kind of moving; and you're not sure if the house you walked up to is the scene of a tragic interpersonal quarrel, or perhaps even worse, the moment when yin and yang become something new
Opeth is a marvel. They can do just about anything, and do it well. As a vocal instructor, you will probably be interested in the band Nightwish. Their singer, Floor Jansen is one of the best in the business. The usual introduction to this band is Ghost Love Score, the version live from Wacken 2013. Unlike some other bands, Nightwish excells at live performances. The genre is symphonic metal.
I love how 'The Drapery Falls' comes full circle, ending with the beginning riff. The 'rhythm' guitarist (Fredrik) is actually an insane shredder but also a really tasty player. He does most of the leads on the last few albums. Mikael...the singer, guitarist, and writes pretty much all the music and lyrics is just an incredible all around musician. They are from Stockholm.
Opeth is phenomenal. The music is so brilliant and so much more than metal to quote a fellow reviewer. I saw the band on their current tour two weeks ago and I was beyond impressed. Mikael and company killed it. Wow 🤩
Congrats on discovering this magnificent band, you will not be disappointed. The usual introduction songs are Ghost of Perdition and Harlequin Forest. And yes, they are from Sweden.
I recently saw Amorphis live when they were touring with Dark Tranquillity, one of my favorite metal bands. I was really impressed by Amorphis’ singer’s combination of clean baritone vocals and very strong deep growls. You should check them out.
You have some great stuff to look forward to with this band. Harlequin forest from the same gig, Ghost of perdition live at red rocks. Man I envy that you still have your whole Opeth journey ahead of you.
This is the song that got me into the band many years ago. I have now seen them over 30 times live and had beers with them. Let's not forget Lopez's bass playing on this. It's amazing.
Thanks for this. Opeth are amazing, and Mikael has great vocal range across different styles. I always tell people to listen to Windowpane by Opeth to see the sweetness and clarity of his clean vocals; everything builds on that. And there is a lot of build!
Windowpane and Hope Leaves are two of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard a rock band produce. 20 years later and Hope Leaves can still pierce my heart like it's the first time I heard it. Pure magic.
Opeth is a "1 of 1" type of band. i've been an avid listener since 2002. you can't really compare between the albums. their discography is one that demands a full listen through. they've grown, matured, experimented, changed styles (and got A LOT of backlash from it). never stopped being true to their own artistic choices. today their new album came out and it's a doozy. really combines all of their career of ~30 years
Both guitarists play lead. Mikael (the lead vocalist) plays the more melodic solos, but in songs where there's serious shredding, then he leaves it to Freddie, the other guitarist. Although you couldn't see from the footage, I'm pretty sure it was keyboardist Per doing the harmony vocals, although Freddie also does harmonies as well. They are from Stockholm, Sweden, and their catalogue is vast and varied in sound. New album out November 2024.
Seen Opeth a couple times and they're some of my most memorable shows because besides the music being obviously great, Mikael is just so freaking CHARMING lol Had something come up in my playlist today you might like for this channel Poppy - No Way Out Female cleans and screams
Idk if you take recommendations here, but if you do. And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope - Ne Obliviscarus Two singers, a great dichotomy in vocals. Cleans and growls.
Cool😎i am a Renegade but also an Opeth fan. Have seen them live many times and got ticket to see them next year 😁🤓🤘Mikael is great vocalist but also so funny.
I would highly recommend that you listen to the new single that was released a few weeks ago called §1. That means, Chapter 1. Preferably the studio recording. You will be pleasently surprised 🙂
Opeth's discography is vast! The Baying of the Hounds is an epic song to check out. Also, for interesting metal vocals to analyze, check out The Contortionist. Their album Language and the title tracks are quite unique.
I really liked your reaction, not only focusing on singing technique but also pointing out what's make them great : odd times signatures, unorthodox chord progressions, and those huge dynamics supported by all those diffrent vocal styles which Mickael is mastering. With so much elements and complexity in their music it's a miracle that Opeth is so much listeanable. As already suggested in another comment, you must react to Devin Townsend: incredible vocals and unique songwriting. Start with Deadhead, then go on with Higher, By Your Command, Deep Peace... pick the live versions from either Plovdiv or Albert Hall.
Ghost of Perdition Live, Sorceress Live, Reverie/Harlequin Forest, Bleak, Deliverance, Baying of the Hounds, Voice of Treason, Faith in Others, man there's so many great Opeth songs to react to. Have fun, and I hope they didn't scare you off. And yes, they have these weird chord changes everywhere, it's stereotypical Opeth tbh. Just amazing chord progressions all around. If you're looking for another band, might I suggest giving TesseracT a shot. Especially the song Legion. They're a great progmetal band, actually atm arguably amongst the greatest imo, and their singer is... Something else for sure. As a vocal coach, you absolutely will find him very interesting. Also, Our vocal legend: Devin Townsend. Man can do anything with his voice.
Also, if you're interested, one popular modern metal band that's very clearly influenced by Opeth is Jinjer. 'Pisces' is generally considered to be a good place to start ◡̈
You will definitely love their another stuff! Unpredictable dynamic shifts, jazzy guitar parts, fascinating chord progressions, beasts drumming, harmonizing vocals, long compositions like a symphony, timid clean and severe growl vocals - I adore them for these things And probably not popular thought - I can hear honesty in his voice, that brings something special into all he sings Here's the keyboard player harmonizing at the end of the song. But solo guitarist also doing it in some other songs
Thanks for the great reaction. And for not doing “Ghost of Perdition”, don’t get me wrong Ghost of Perdition is an absolute masterpiece, but youtubers have done it to death.
Mikael Åkerfeldt is not only the lead guitarist and singer, but primary songwriter for the band. He's also self taught, which likely explains some of the odd chords, though metal does use a lot of chords and chord progressions not often heard in pop. This song features a hell of a lot of tritones, even for a metal song.
Glad to hear you are interested in hearing more Opeth because they have a LOT of albums! You can really hear how the band has evolved from a more straight black metal sound to their current very progressive metal approach if you go all the way back to their early albums like Orchid or Morningrise. Opeth is one of my favorite bands, because I love a band that evolves their sound between albums and doesn't pigeonhole themselves to a specific genre.
🔥🔥❤Opeth❤🔥🔥 There are so many to recommend, but I'll start with: Coil/Heir Apparent. (without a pause until a bit after Heir Apparent). Definitely subscribing for more Opeth.
Here from your other channel. Been loving your Ren stuff. Buuuut - Opeth are one of my first loves. Absolute S-tier band.Incredible live. I am not going to make any suggestions, as I'm fine with any Opeth you react to... it's a journey. And also gotta mention that I know people have been mentioning Jinger. Absolutely worthwhile, brilliant band.
Check out Add Reality by Dan Swano. Another great Swede. Very nice growls in the main part of the song and then the last couple of minutes he switches to beautiful cleans
Oh and if you like Opeth, Devin Townsend is a short throw away - that's a rabbit hole that will drop your jaw. Deadhead @ the Albert Hall is just next-level, vocally speaking
subbed after 5 minutes, didn't need the whole video but i still watched it, love Opeth and and this channel i just found! EDIT: I have a question... It's pretty clear you know your game when it comes to vocals but regarding growls... you know how it works because it is intuitive to you? It seems that way to me but also because somehow i have a hard time imagining someone at a school training that, they don't right? Or do they?
They're from Sweden, also both guitarists do lead at points, I think most consider Fredrik to be the Lead player too. Also, Ghost of Perdition and Sorceress at Red Rocks is a great watch and listen.
Mendez the bassist is the best thing about this song, I'm a drummer, the rhythm is actually the lead but mikael can also lead, one of the best songs off the greatest album ever!!! Just stumbled on your channel very good 👍
Im relatively new to opeth. But they have quickly rised to my 2nd fave band.. There music just has so much feeling and depth, and there intros and outros are 2nd to none.. The mighty TOOL are and will always be my fave tho.. Good day
.. Nice.. Enjoy the ride.. Maynards vocals are something else. Especially in there earlier stuff.. And Danny Carey.. Well im biased.. But best drummer i have ever seen..
I'd love to see a reaction to Foe by Leprous. I've never seen a reaction to that song before, and I'd love to hear a pro musician's take on it. It's a masterclass in using dissonance right from the first chord. Finding this channel that's brand new and already this high quality is the perfect opportunity, since it's not the usual Leprous recommendation. Rock on!
Yes, Alex Terrible is amazing! I love this band and this song was even better live than the studio recording, in my humble opinion. ❤🎉🤘 Yes, Opeth are Swedes.
when you said about the growling that it's like "yawning" for the deep growls, and thinking about it high screams are are like sneezing 😂😂 never really thought about the "why & how" of making these vocals I just experimented with it decades ago. IMO it's easier than clean singing
I believe this song is about addiction, which is interesting because the last line of the song says "and lapse into the ways of misery", and the song ends exactly how it starts. This album in particular (Blackwater Park) is not a conceptual album in the sense that it follows a storyline, but it does explore dark concepts like addiction (in this song) or suicide in "Dirge for November". They do have conceptual albums that follow a story, like "Still Life" and "My arms, your hearse".
@@treygc3291 Really? I kind of fell off when they went full retro-prog. Not really my thing and all the videos I had seen for quite a few years were honestly hard to watch with how bad his growls got. I really noped out when the Bloodbath Over Bloodstock DVD dropped. It made me really sad. Glad to hear that's not the case.
@ nah man his growls are really good still almost better than ever maybe his age is adding to the sound. Check out the video I posted, I will post more small clips I recorded there are also a few other recordings just search “Opeth the Filmore New Orleans “
@@syntheticsleephe massively improved since that, thankfully. I agree that Bloodbath performance looked like the sad end of an era, but he's gotten consistently back into form in the past half decade or so.
Welcome to the rabbit hole that is Opeth! You will enjoy going through it! Check also Tesseract - Legion for a captivating vocal performance. As the lead singer mentioned (Dan Tompkins) this song was written with the vocal melody first.
Sorry, I'm only interested in opeth reactions ) but you provide so much great info here, will look forward for more opeth from you. Wish you a ton views!
First time watching your content and really enjoying it! I love how you analyse not just the vocals but the rest of the music too. Liked it within the first minute of your analysis ◡̈ I think you'd love these other tracks by Opeth, in my personal order of priority: The Leper Affinity, Bleak, Ghost of Perdition.
Thanks for checking out Opeth. Mikael is an amazing growler, it's best heard on album versions tbh. Over the years he learnt some more vocal trickery, their new song S1 (paragraph 1) is a great example of that. They're prog metal so long intro/outtros are kind of staple for them there's a ton of clean-only albums, more prog rock of them too. What describes their music most? Sorrow.... There's a lot of themes like that. Not sure if you ever checked out Devin Townsend? He's an amazingly versatile metal singer. Vocal coaches like checking Kingdom at EMGTv but there's so much to choose from. My favorite is the Death of Music at the Royal Albert Hall.
You will surely be impressed by how Mikael sounds in this if you've never heard Opeth before, but I believe he was actually having a hard time with his voice when this was filmed. He was lacking some depth and got raspier on the "higher" scream sounds. There's a clear difference in the studio version.
I REALLY recommend you to do their song Demon of the Fall (live at the roundhouse tapes) from 2006 I think. It´s peak screams from Mikael, some of the best I´ve ever heard. I know everyone will recommend The Red Rocks concert but the vocal performance there is nothing compared to the Roundhouse Tapes.
Yup. I'd say Fredrik plays first lead and Mikael second. This being an older track (before Fredrik was in the band) makes it a place for Mikael to shine a bit 😊
His growls were already on the way down in quality by this time Recommend checking out the song Bleak from The Roundhouse Tapes which is 4 years earlier or Shepherd's Bush Empire for something even older but in decent quality.
You know what's absolutely wild? The growls in this performance are actually pretty mid for this guy. I might even go so far as to say kind of bad, actually. And he's still in the top tier. They had an earlier live album called the Roundhouse Tapes, if you want the good stuff go to that one and check out Blackwater Park. No clean vocals on that track, much MUCH heavier, but a fantastic showcase for what he can pull off. He's incredible and Opeth are legendary. If you want a different side of his harsh vocals, check out the crazy overlooked Katatonia album Brave Murder Day. Imagine if the Cure and My Bloody Valentine had a black metal baby. The whole thing is a recommend, but for content purposes the tracks Brave, Murder and Rainroom are all exceptional. I've been listening to that record since it came out in like 1997 (I think?) and it still gets better every single time I put it on.
it's unfortunate that he picked this particular live version where Mikael's growls were at their worst. He didn't get to experience the demon himself first hand
@@fafolaw ANYTHING from the Roundhouse Tapes. I saw them a bunch of times (maybe 20-ish) and that particular tour was EPIC. Going from hanging out Mikael at the merch table on the BWP tour, with like 15 people at the venue to a packed house with an absolutely feral audience was a pretty incredible journey.
Opeth is epic 🇸🇪. You have to react to more songs like Deliverance (live at the red rocks amphitheatre). Pls just don’t rip the masterpieces apart. Do the pauses in sections instead. This one made me loose much of the feeling of the whole song and for me thats the most important thing when you experience music together. What you said though was interesting and joyful 😊
Opeth is SOOOO much more than metal. Beauty and sorrow and rage woven into dark melodies of genius.
This is a very accurate, sweet description.
Accurate 🤘
you literally just described the majority of the good metal bands. putting down a genre by elevating your favorite band out of it is something a 15 year old with limited experience in the genre would do

Either Ghost of Perdition or Sorceress from their live at Red Rocks show are great and worth a watch.
Awesome, thanks.
Very much agreed!!! Can't go wrong with either ❤
Yes, they're great performances. I ended up seeing Opeth live in London a couple years ago and they were great then too.
They are a Swedish band. The harmonies you hear are sung by the keyboardist. Dude has a beautiful voice.
Per Wiberg's voice was the best match for Mikael's. Blended together effortlessly.
When you like this one, you've got an awfull lot to experience by these guys. Congratulations.

Premium example of how waltz can be woven into metal. Extremely rare skill.
Yes I love this, Igorrr is another band that does this well (start on their most recent album as their genre goes all over the place).
where is the waltz part?

Good day
Haha cool. I come from the opposite direction. Had Opeth as my favorite band for 20+ years, and have just started to explore Tool xD
.. Nice.. Enjoy the ride.. Maynards vocals are something else. Especially in there earlier stuff.. And Danny Carey.. Well im biased.. But best drummer i have ever seen..
@@shaunholden9363 Thank you, I'll check out their earlier stuff then :)
Rock on!
The entire of the coal album is a masterclass
Definitely watch live at shepherd's bush empire. I would recommend Master’s Apprentices.
Yes, Alex Terrible is amazing!
I love this band and this song was even better live than the studio recording, in my humble opinion. ❤🎉🤘
Yes, Opeth are Swedes.
when you said about the growling that it's like "yawning" for the deep growls, and thinking about it high screams are are like sneezing 😂😂
never really thought about the "why & how" of making these vocals I just experimented with it decades ago.
IMO it's easier than clean singing
Many feel that way. The grit can be a comfy mask for the voice.
He is the best growl vocalist...IMHO
I believe this song is about addiction, which is interesting because the last line of the song says "and lapse into the ways of misery", and the song ends exactly how it starts.
This album in particular (Blackwater Park) is not a conceptual album in the sense that it follows a storyline, but it does explore dark concepts like addiction (in this song) or suicide in "Dirge for November".
They do have conceptual albums that follow a story, like "Still Life" and "My arms, your hearse".
I’m not even gonna lie, this is not Mikael’s best guttural vocals he is sooooooooo good at gutturals.
Yeah, these are mid at best.
@ yeah, the concert I went to a few months ago was a small ass concert in New Orleans and it sounded way better than this.
Tim, you're in for a musickal journey!
The guitar solos are SOOO tasty!
This is a live show too, they sound even better on the album.
Sorry, I'm only interested in opeth reactions ) but you provide so much great info here, will look forward for more opeth from you. Wish you a ton views!
Love opeth.
Cheers, added!

They're Swedish. Great reaction.
You have an incredible journey ahead digging into Opeth! Try Melissa Bonny for another great singer who can bring the Devil…!🥰😈🤘
He is not the lead guitarr player. The other guy is the shredder but Mikael does some leads here and writes basically all music
Yup. I'd say Fredrik plays first lead and Mikael second. This being an older track (before Fredrik was in the band) makes it a place for Mikael to shine a bit 😊
This is great, but I think his growls used to be a bit better, check out Opeth - Demon of The Fall (The Roundhouse Tapes Live)
Welcome to the rabbit hole of Opeth, you have no idea the journey you'll have.
The Baying of the Hounds
Now go watch Ghost Of Perdition live at Red Rocks. You'll appreciate the harmonies and contrast.
His growls were already on the way down in quality by this time
Recommend checking out the song Bleak from The Roundhouse Tapes which is 4 years earlier or Shepherd's Bush Empire for something even older but in decent quality.
Hey Tim!
I'd love to se you do a video of Opeth album 'Still Life'' from start to finish without longer interoperation, you think you can fix that?
The Lotus eater would be a great tune next
Guitarist Fredrik does sing a little bit, but harmonies are always(?) by keyboard player Joakim.
I agree, he should check out Demon of The Fall (The Roundhouse Tapes Live)
@@fafolaw ANYTHING from the Roundhouse Tapes. I saw them a bunch of times (maybe 20-ish) and that particular tour was EPIC. Going from hanging out Mikael at the merch table on the BWP tour, with like 15 people at the venue to a packed house with an absolutely feral audience was a pretty incredible journey.
Let’s go!!!
This song is insane.
You should check out Eddie Berg from immience vocal playthroughs!
Ghost of Perdition @ Red Rocks next
The best live Opeth concerts are The Roundhouse Tapes & live at Royal Albert Hall. Best growls.
Just me or does anyone else hear a bit of a Jethro Tull flavour??
I think you’d dig some Death dude!
I saw "Opeth' and clicked immediately.
Listen to Bleak please.
Subbed.
Check out Jinjer if you haven’t already.
He said Mikael was a guy with a high voice. I giggled
although yes in this song he sings in a somewhat higher pitch
Amazing. Check out Steven Wilson.
🤘💥
Welcome to Opeth's rabbit hole...
Sweden I believe
It would be lovely a start from the studio version first. And this is not The best live. Many hugs.
Says he prefers to hear the song through.
Proceeds to stop every 5 seconds. 😂
Well, its time for Tool hahah
Oh man... another victim of excellency
