This is without a doubt among the most beautiful compositions I have ever had the privilege to hear. One of the finest renditions. One of the planet's most gifted artists. Splendid.
There are not ENOUGH "Likes" on TH-cam to honor this Musician. There should be "LOVES" to give this Man! This Genius! - and This POET of Sound! At the end of the day - The TRUE Musicians are Humble, and don't call attention to THEMSELVES! They are in the Service of Something "Higher", and more Sublime than the pool of crassness, and vulgarity This "World" swims in. Ralph Towner is G.O.A.T!
Well, life is worth living if you get a good deck of cards and know how to play them, but many people are born with horrible diseases and into poverty, war, etc. They aren’t given the chance to make the most of their lives. Sometimes it’s just meaningless suffering. But yeah, this song is heavenly indeed.
I get so engrossed in Ralph Towner's music that I sometimes forget to leave a positive rating --- but seeing 99 thumbs up with 0 thumbs down beckoned me to make it 100!
Ralph Towner is an amazing artist. His album Solstice is one of the best records I ever bought, and I have about 1400 . Everyone should own a copy of that album.
Solstice was the first Towner album I ever bought (first ECM as well), back when it was first released, totally on a whim based on the back cover photos -- four musicians equipped with a 12-string acoustic guitar, a tiny soprano sax in a J-shape instead of straight, the first solid-body upright bass I'd ever seen and a drum kit... I had to hear what this sounded like. I'm not exaggerating to say that record reset most of what I'd thought about music before then. The compositions, the musicianship, the sonic atmosphere were and still are stunning. 45 years on, and I still listen to the entire album frequently.
@@aka.Mr.French Yes. Those early ECM records were noticeably better sounding than albums recorded in the states and that music is just as meaningful now as it was back then.
If I had to take just 1 ECM Record with me to a deserted island, or ...a Forest - it would be THAT "Solstice" album. It DEFINES the ECM ethos like no other!
Ralph the master Guitarplayer From Oregon ! I always loved this guys playing so musical and expressive , with a lot of of original idears. One of the greatest in this style of guitar playing of all time.
Gad what fingers, when I look at my comparative claws I want to give up. His album with Gary Burton (slide show) it what started my on Ralph Towner years ago.
Maestro Ralph Towner is such a prolific artist gifted and such a talent to behold in concert.I saw his group Oregon play this at Yoshis in Oakland Ca. and it was pure magic. The audience was in a hushed moment when finished. He lives in Paloma Itaiy and i would like to see him or Oregon again but we have to wait till the pandemic returns back to where it came from or we adjust to a new norm.Blessing to Maestro Towner.Shalom.
Thank you for the reply. He had a heart attack while doing a jazz tribute fell off the stage and rushed to the hospital where he was in remission. He is getting older and sadly we are losing our elder musicians. I really doubt that we will see Oregon perform again due to many reasons. I wish him many blessings.
There are a lot of great, underappreciated guitarists of which Ralph Towner is one. In my personal opinion, I also think that Al DiMeola should be included in this conversation when you listen to this style of playing. Pure genius as well.
Indeed no comparison … Al admires Ralph it’s true, but he also plays a Towner piece during the acoustic part of his set and doesn’t acknowledge him, leading the audience to believe the beautiful piece they just heard was written by DiMeola … it’s a douchey move
@orlandoguitarist Yes I think I want something similar, mainly for jazz/bossa nova, maybe some classical. I live 30 minutes north of NYC and I assume there are a lot of places I can go to in the city.
@FantomOfFear I would recommend finding an experienced guitarist to help you select a guitar in your price range by playing and listening to as many as possible. Unfortunately, your geographic location is a big factor in finding a large variety of instruments. What state to you live in? Are you looking for a classical/nylon-string guitar like what Ralph Towner mainly plays? Good luck!
@alvega66 Ralph Towner uses classical guitars built by Jeffrey Elliott almost exclusively. He has a long waiting list of orders and his prices are quite "up there!"
Can someone tell me the makes and models of guitars used by Ralph Towner, both in this video and in general? I'm particularly interested in 6 string nylon models. Thank you.
I met Ralph in the 80's here in NYC. He had at the time a beautiful Ramirez. He states it's long gone now, regrettably. He has two Elliotts, a Jim Redgate; a Giovanni Garofalo made in Palermo; and a Aldo Illota. Also two Guilds from 1976 made for him. Other than the Ramirez, I got the info from an interview with him. Hope that helps.
Actually it's not too bad. His sheet music lays it out quite nicely. The improv bits, of course, take quite a bit of ingenuity. I'm not great at it....
Who is Page? Jimmy Page? If you meant him, he's a great guitarist for what he plays (blues and rock), but he's not even remotely close to being as talented in terms of composition, musicality, or even technique as Towner. Granted, they play different styles, but take a look at, for instance, Mevlana Etude, Nardis, Spirit Lake, Nimbus, etc. There's just no way Jimmy Page is playing any of that.
Page has some acoustic tunes like the 12 string “Braun-yr-aur”, which actually would fit right in on a playlist with this tune. It’s definitely sloppier and there’s overdubs, but he wasn’t a slouch on an acoustic. But yeah, I agree with your overall assessment.
This is without a doubt among the most beautiful compositions I have ever had the privilege to hear. One of the finest renditions. One of the planet's most gifted artists. Splendid.
Couldn't Express it better, Dude

Beautiful music, thank you Ralph Towner for the many years of pleasure I have had listening to your music.
Thanks Ralph for 40 years of music that lifted my spirit.
when you take a piece of heaven in music form and play it hear on earth, in all its beauty, life really is worth living...👍

Amazing tune.. Saw this tour when I was younger sat right in front of Ralph was incredible. Great moment in my life!
You can feel his inner balance, that gives me courage and peace at the same time. Thanks for posting.
👍🏼✨
Wow, such a bright tone and clean playing, and the arrangement is gorgeous.
Signature, necessity, evocative. Beauty is beyond words.
Always a very good taste to compose. I'm a big fan of Ralph.
One of the greatest and under-recognized musicians of our day. Truly an artist of broad and probing genius.
Dang these are some ancient comments. Wonder if it will notify you.
Always a favorite ... thank you!
I saw him many years ago. He blew us away with stuff like this for over an hour. Then he took a break and returned to do the same thing on the piano.
I was at this concert...May 1998 Osnabrück Stadthalle / Germany / Open Strings Guitar Festival...remember every note... what a wonderful memory !!
🙂👍🏼
This piece, along with Andrew York’s Home are some of my favorite pieces.
i respect him as a guitar player and composer.
Один из моих любимых музыкантов. Волшебник!!!
Speechless. ♥️
Gad what fingers, when I look at my comparative claws I want to give up. His album with Gary Burton (slide show) it what started my on Ralph Towner years ago.

Ralph married an Italian lady, and initially lived in PALERMO, Sicily. I believe they now live in Rome.

I just wish he and Nick Drake had gotten together to describe a spell for the moment. Maybe the best guitarist and best lyricist together at one time.
Excellent!
love the reverb on the guitar
Maravilloso!!! Saludos desde chile!!!!!
Great song thanks for sharing!!!
Gorgeous!
I wish to have this guy talent...
Federico Rossi don't we all

simpley beauitful yet simple
Melodically related to "If"? Equally beautiful, in any case.
hermosamente simple...gracias
I think this was originally done in the studio as an Oregon piece, on an album called Beyond Words (1995 or so)
Indeed it was, and performed Live At Yoshi's as well. Both performances PREMIUM!

Actually it first appeared on Ralph's wonderful solo album Ana

from what I've heard he now uses a guitar made in Australia
MUY HERMOSO.

George. If you ever read this... this was what I played.
Actually it's not too bad. His sheet music lays it out quite nicely.

@orlandoguitarist What guitar do you recommend to start out with for around $500
Yep, Yamaha.
Alahambra 2c

Hes a lot more technical then Page, lol, but thanks god he is not Jimi Page and also the contrary
