my goodness your colour work is FASCINATING. i haven’t seen someone able to capture in image such a whimsical energy quite like you do in your pieces. the blue section with the comet-esque shapes in the bottom left of this painting is some of your best atmospheric work ever. well done!

Hi Tails! As an MSU art student (I graduate in spring 2025!), it was nice to hear your experience. Also, I remember that I saw your portrait of Geraldine in the Kresge Art Center back when you used to attend. It was fantastic! You have a great sense of color and light in your work. Happy to see that you are finding fulfillment in your life and work post dropping out!

What amazes me the most is your refreshing viewpoint on life and art in general. You do have a healthy mindset and you are realistic about bills and finances but manage to keep the creativity packed into your work. I really admire that. I love the way you perceive art and how you transform it. It got me thinking about whether or not I am giving my own art the love it deserves. Thank you for your content! You have a bright future!

My teacher bough a painting from me. Some people just have what it takes, like you. I only went 2 years but it was not a university level of art. I went to galleries very early and they took some of my paintings as a test and i sold 3/4. They thought i hade gone 5 years on the art school haha. But i was a total rookie. I was about 20 years old when i started to paint. In some cases in the art world they want all those fancy merits on paper that you went to that popular art school. But in the end i think the quality of the paintings speak for itself. A good thing about being in school is that we can learn to know many good friends that is similar to ourselves and we may find friends for life.

This is an amazing painting! Such a crazy interplay of light and colour and some really dynamic ideas. I would just say that anyone who wants to make a living off of their art has to paint and work at their craft as much as they can obsessively. I was a little thrown back when Tails said this at 19:21 because holding your own level of art as an agreed upon standard of a high level of art is a little crazy. And I know he prefaced what he said as not intending to be discouraging but I think it could be definitely taken that way. Tails is amazing at what he does but at the end of the day, skill and talent is in the eye of the beholder so I would remind everyone watching who have the instinct to compare their own work to Tails’ work, to take a step back and realize that you have the exact artistic potential as anyone else given you put in the time and effort.

    • @tailsjekel_art
      @tailsjekel_art  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

You know what I think I am trying to discourage people. Not from creating, I think as many people should create as possible. However, I see a lot of people take overambitious steps to pursue art when their work isn't at the level it needs to be. That doesn't mean that they should stop creating, or that they will never make it, however I don't want to spread the idea that everyone can make it if they "just work hard enough" because I don't believe that to be true with the art business.
And I used my art as a gauge because I am only valid speaking from my own experience. To begin working full time, I don't think my art was at the level it needed to be until about 2 years ago. My old work was not getting recognized, and it was not selling because I don't think it was good enough (or at least I wasn't creating anything interesting enough). Im so happy I made those pieces, and I would do nothing differently in my journey. Your art needs to be there, and the breakthrough to my success tells me where that line is (For my work, specifically).

    • @samwarner6024
      @samwarner6024 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@tailsjekel_art I appreciate your clarification. You worded things better here than in the video and I understand where you are coming from. I also get that you are talking from your own experience. I’m talking from mine (as someone who is building their portfolio to one day sell my work).
I know you didn’t intend to sound discouraging but I said people could interpret it that way because of the way you put yourself as an example (from your clarification I now understand what you were trying to get across). I was speaking for those artists who don’t pursue a career in art because they simply compare themselves to everyone else who may be deemed better than them, and that in itself is a battle that many artists face day to day. I know I face it, and here I am, persevering.
Then again, I don’t really think there is such a thing as being overambitious when pursuing a career in art (maybe in the sense that you rush into things without having learnt enough, but I wouldn’t call that overambition, I’d call that lack of focus and patience) At the end of the day, every step you take towards making art and learning about the industry counts. And ambition has to come with action.
So i disagree, I think most people can make a career in art (granted you have the time, money, resources, and want…) It really depends on how focused you are about it, and to me, ambition and perseverance is key. And in today’s day and age the word “art” is becoming more and more illusive, plagued with gimmicky tropes, shortcuts and trends that make a lot of money. So in a way, now is the best time to try and stand out.
But ultimately I agree with you, an artist knows when their work is good enough when it starts getting recognized, being sold, and making an impact, as yours does! :)

Thank God 4 years of art school in Ukraine cost near 4000 USD - slightly less than 1000 USD every year (still pretty decent sum for my country but not as nearly "decent" as education bills on the West). One of the very few good things about living in my country is (relatively) affordable education.

I’m mainly a portrait artist with watercolor and acrylics together. But knowing you use so many mediums in a piece gives me the encouragement to sell my sculptures and novels eventually. I find that when I use a different medium, I’m a different artist! Like with portraits I’m realistic and with sculptures bc I’m a nursing student, I sculpt anatomical figures or more dark, majestic pieces. When I write novels I’m more free and illogical. Or I’m just illogical to begin with, but either way, you’ve really gave me a boost of confidence. 😊

really appreciate how candid you are with just about everything. i feel like main character syndrome often makes people react super negatively to others sharing their success stories and to a point i get it - it's frustrating when a path isn't available to you due to your circumstances. at the same time some people need to realize when something isn't about them lol i don't mean to be insensitive but in the year 2024 any artist's success should be a victory for all of us. honestly, to me it's so inspiring just seeing another young artist "make it" on the scene at all. this sense that there might be a space for us, you know?

I found this video as a girl who went to a small Michigan community college and got an associate's in arts, but I wanted to go to art school. Even just commuting and living at home my tuition bill was still 9k a semester. Now I am feeling that odd feeling wishing I could keep up with my friends and be in school. I really like your style and engery in your paintings, they have a lot of soul and really draw me in to them (the ones I've seen) keep up the good work my young friend.
oh and you inspired me to drop out of college. HAH, nah man I did that a looong time ago 865,315 years ago to be precise. I did not know what I wanted to do and shifted between programming (this was in the days of main frames), architecture and accounting. cutting to chase, I dropped out and joined Air Force. fast forward to now, I just retired from 23 years automation and started learning digital art as a hobby. I have never taken any art classes nor talent. The program I use is called Rebelle, it simulates "real" oils and watercolor art. I am lazy and like the digital aspect because when I am ready to stop for day I just save it and don't hafta clean brushes LOL.
oh yeah, one of the things digital art tutorials say to do is to mirror the image from time to time in order to get a fresh perspective of your drawing/painting BUT not to over do it otherwise you get used to seeing it that way and any abnormality in your work might not jump out at you

I feel like this video is so important for me.
Please do forgive me since my head is a mess, and I am opening up to you some deep things that still to this day I am dealing with. Besides, English is not my first language.
For context: I live in Spain. Fine arts degree at university is around 1k a year. I know for you in the US might be a blessing, but here in Spain is not as easy for middle class family. I had to go out of town which rised the prices. This is to bring context to what I am about to say, not make any comparison such us: "uuuh I had it worse" or anything like that. Not at all!!
So I was 18 when I knew I wanted to go back to art. I realised what I was truly passioante is about art. And I still am to this day. Before, I did economics high school, and I was in another era. My materialistic bitch era in a way. (Gosh I am embarrassed. But I do still like economics and marketing up to this day)
So at 18 in 2018 I started learning on my own. TH-cam videos all the time, drawing, painting, watercolour, digital art, etc. etc.
I knew I wanted to bring back my dream to study fine arts. It was seeeriously a dream of mine when I was a kid. I remember vividly those nights looking through the window, wishing the stars to study fine arts.
So I applied and I almost got out. But magically, I entered. It was one of the most "I am in the right path" moments for me.
So I entered in fall 2019... I was enjoying it, having fun with friends, I LOVED to experiment with different mediums. Everything my teachers gave me, I sucked it like a sponge.
March 2020.... Covid. I ran home because I knew it was not 2 weeks and it ain't no way I was gonna tolerate the bitches of my flatmates in a quarantine!
I think, it was the worst that I did. I went back home where I am not safe. I am discriminated, I don't have the space. I felt in depression, I was like a literal zombie. Clinically depressed.
Point is, I suspended 5 out of 10 subjects that I needed to pass. I repeated year with those 5 that were left for me and meanwhile I was still learning fundamentals and digital art. At this point I did digital art because I didn't have the physical space for mixed media painting. Meanwhile my friends were a year ahead, my new classmates were horrible. They believed they were smart because they got good grades. When, in fact, the teachers gave it to them.(It's long to prove this to a foreigner who doesn't know about the system here. But it is true, I guess you'll have to trust me on that)
So I finally finished finally the first year. But it felt very bad for me.
2021-2022 Were years in Europe where inflation was all over the roof. Finantially looked very bad for me. I started to hate the city. I missed the sea I grew up with. The fine arts degree seemed pointless to me because at this point, I wanted to learn to paint. Physically, digitally, whatever but paint. Not sculpture, not performance, no conceptual. Paint.
So I dropped out and came back to my parents' home.
Bad idea. I was back to depression, to being discriminated. All meanwhile I was learning some online courses at schoolism. Best choice I did besides the mess.
So after that my parent's forced me to enter a school of arts in my hometown. Which honestly, it sounded like a good idea.
But it was not, I was once again, being manipulaated by my parents who forced me to study something at some school or else they would kick me out.
    So I complied.
Between 2022 and 2024 I was struggling to get a degree that I really can not put my heart into. It was the worst years of my life besides in middle school and high school. It was far more work than at uni and my heart was not into it. The school is corrupted, the teachers are absolutely useless. It's just... so nasty.
But I knew that I had an excuse to be apart from my parents house, at a very affordable education and meanwhile on my free time I could do my own studies of art.
(Okay I am starting to cry. I hope to reach the end making sense so that you see why I write this comment. I am sorry if it looks lame)
Okay so. Fast forward to this summer. I feel acomplished, proud of myself for finally finish something in my life.
Over these years I grew a sense that I am imbecile and I will never be enough to have a degree. You see, I grew up believing that education and learning is the upmost important. And me being such dark academia library rat. I wanted to do B.A., Master and doctorate. I wanted to teach the new generations of artists at university. It was not really in my plan to be an artist. Because my passion was in learning art, exploring mediums, learning technicalities, and even therical stuff.
So fuck it, I did it. I did finish it and I am fucking proud of myself.
This summer for once in my life I am super happy. I could spend 1 month and a half to do art every single day. Enjoy my craft, be in peace in my room exploring my technique and my medium.
But my heart shatters whenever I think of fine arts degree and all that meant for me. My partner is a doctorate in archeology. He got there because he was good and conections, not necessarilly passion. I am proud of him but it feels a little hit sad how unfair it is sometimes life.
    POINT is:
Hearing you talk about your experience. However different is from mine. since you clearly have better level and more real world experience. For me is healing, just to hear someone else speak their experience a little bit similar to mine is healing.
So THANK YOU❤ Thank you for helping me not feel lonely in what I considered to be the worst mistake I ever made in my life. Thank you for being so open about it❤ Thank you.
This comment is more for me to self express, as I face all my inner turmoils.
You probably don't care and don't have time to read this. You know, I get it, I don't blame you. I just wanted to say and deep heart-felt hones Thank you❤

Paying that much for a degree is a scam. There are many countries around the world proving it. I did go to a private uni in Poland and it was soooooo much cheaper. I loved my experience. Now I plan to go to a public art school to get my third degree :D because life changed, I've changed my plans and now I want to make art. If I would have loans to pay I wouldn't have a freedom to do that. So my question is... do people who have to pay so much for education and health care are really free or is freedom something people have to pay for? Because if it's the latter than it raises some questions.
