- Laxmi Agarwal is an Indian campaigner with Stop Acid Attacks as her main initiative and also a TV host. She was attacked in 2005 at age 15, by a 32-year-old for rejecting him as a partner. She has also raised her voice against acid attacks and made sure that there was a petition sanctioned to curb acid sales and taking that cause to the Indian Supreme Court.
Laxmi Agarwal is an Indian campaigner with Stop Acid Attacks and a TV host. She is an acid attack survivor and speaks for the rights of acid attack victims. She was attacked in 2005 at age 15, by a 32-year-old man whose advances she had rejected. Her story, among others, was told in a series on acid attack victims by Hindustan Times. She has also advocated against acid attacks through gathering 27,000 signatures for a petition to curb acid sales, and taking that cause to the Indian Supreme Court. Her petition led the Supreme Court to order the central and state governments to regulate the sale of acid, and the Parliament to make prosecutions of acid attacks easier to pursue.
She is the director of Chhanv Foundation, a NGO dedicated to help the survivors of acid attacks in India. Laxmi received a 2014International Women of Courage award by US First Lady Michelle Obama. She was also chosen as the NDTV Indian of the Year.

I just feel like it's more important and will be more effective to change the upbringing of boys and teaching them to respect women since an early age rather than teaching girls how to protect themselves. He shouldn't have harassed her in the first place.

Indian Penal Code ammended to include sec 326A and 326B to provide strict punishment to acid attackers..... But still attacks continues by using acid, petrol etc. Recent incident at Thiruvalla,Kerala is heart breaking the innocent college student was seriously injured by her former classmate, poured patrol on her body and flared up.....Later she was died...... Similiar incident happened many times in Kerala -----the most elegant State in India------earlier. Madam appreciating your will power...Supporting all your bonafide efforts....waiting for the film depicting your epic come back......

That guy, with his shameful act, tried to ruin her dreams. But she didn't only fulfill her dream but also became able to make changes in life of thousands of girls and their families. That is why we are getting to know who she is and what her story is.

This is Laxmi Agarwal. An acid attack survivor. Laxmi was a 15 year old school girl with dreams of becoming a singer. When one of her best friends brother, a 32 year old man claimed to have fallen in love with her. He would constantly stalk her & harass her, even get violent with her on her way to school & back. For almost a month. One day, on the 19th of April 2005, he texts her & says that he is deeply in love with her & wants to marry her. She did not reply to the text. He texts her again says "I need an answer right away ". Once again she ignores his msg & does not reply. Then on the 21st of April, he calls her & says "You really want to make your mom & dad proud & make a name for yourself some day, don't you?" She says "Yes".
Then as she left for work that day (she had taken up a job in the hopes of earning some money so she could save enough for her Singing lessons. She noticed 2 people following her. It was the same guy and along with him was his younger brothers girlfriend. She was constantly staring at her. Before she could even realize, the woman pushed her to the ground & she took out a beer bottle which contained battery acid, and poured it all over her face & ran as Laxmi fainted.
It was the busy Khanmarket area in Delhi. Soon people gathered around her but not one person came forward to help. Finally a man who saw all of this happen pushed the crowd aside and came to her with a large Coke bottle half filled with water & poured it on her face. But as soon as he did that all the acid dripped down to her neck & chest doing more damage. She felt as if her body was on fire.
Finally when they took her to a hospital, the staff there had to pour 20 buckets of water but the acid still kept burning into her skin. When her parents arrived, her mom was inconsolable & when she hugged her father, the acid from her face burnt his shirt. You can imagine how potent the acid actually was. It took her 2 and a half months of hospital stay & treatment before she was home. Treatment was really painful. She had to endure excruciating pain while her eyelids were being sown back without anaesthesia. Her whole face had to be restructured. Finally she arrived home and was curious to see herself in the mirror, in her innocent mind she thought that since she had undergone so many surgeries in the hospital, the doctors might have reconstructed a beautiful face for her. Her parents had removed all mirrors from the house but she still managed to catch a glimpse of herself and she was horrified. She was so depressed she wanted to kill herself. But then she thought to herself what would happen to her parents if she killed herself. All that they had gone through for the past 2 and a half months would be a waste. She remembered her fathers words , that Nothing is impossible.
Meanwhile all of their relatives & friends had deserted them. The guy who perpetrated the crime got out on parole & the first thing he does after coming out is get married!
Laxmi tried to get her life back on track. She took up a beauticians course, a tailoring course. Unfortunately life had yet to deal another blow. Her brother fell seriously ill with TB, and was on his death bed, her father couldn't bear the stress of it all & had a heart attack & passed away. He was also the sole earning member of their family. Now everything came on Laxmi's shoulders. She tried hard to look for a job but was rejected everywhere because of her looks. Somehow she got in touch with one Mr. Alok who started an anti-acid attack campaign & Laxmi got involved with it. She walked ramps, counselled other victims. The foundation now runs a cafe with other acid attack victims. She is full of positivity & confidence. She remembers her fathers words, he said to her after the attack "One day you will fall in love with your face". That has finally come true.
