That instrument is called a Kobyz and is native to Dimash's homeland of Kazakhstan. It was Dimash's idea to incorporate it into the composition of this song. This performance as well as many others from Dimash is almost too much for our mere mortal bodies and minds can withstand! Watching Dimash perform is a full body experience!

It is not only the instrument of Kazakhstan .But of the Turkic nation . The jyrau sings with a guttural, raspy timbre, in a style common to many nomadic groups of Central Asia, Mongolia, and Southern Siberia. Although this timbre was in the past associated with shamanic practice, living memory of this has died out but it is returning , and modern jyrau instead interpret the timbre as a vocal imitation of the kobyz itself.

It begins with the shyness and doubt of a stranger who enters a territory totally alien to him (when he plays in piano mode and with sounds surrounded by encouragement), he moves on to the desire to test his strength to achieve a new beginning in music. life. (then when he achieves that magnificent passage through the entire spectrum of his vocal range using very different singing techniques in each register) and finally reaches the power of the victorious hero who not only tried, not only fought but finally defeated him (when he shows us the power of his belt and that super long high note of 20 seconds)! I only marked 3 moments, but they were more because between the choruses there were 2 slightly different moments of narration, but both in their register under the bass-baritone and there was another chorus (in total there were 4 choruses and two parts a little more of the story , all in different dynamics, different tonalities and very different vocal techniques interpreted impeccably from a technical point of view, but also with strong emotional effects in the sense of an impressive and maximum effect on the public that practically listened to the almost entire song hypnotized) ! For me it was the perfect song of the moment and it was a sublime demonstration of how far Dimash Qudaibergen can progress even though he is already far above his contemporaries. In this song he covered from C2 to F6! The special instrument is called kobyz, it is made of a single piece of carved wood, lined with goatskin, with two strings of horse hair. It is a traditional tool for peoples of Turkish origin, such as the Kazakhs, and has been considered a magical tool used by shamans in healing rituals in particular!

Dimash and the composer of this song, Igor Krutoy (at the piano), often use archetypes in their music. This epic piece evokes the journey of soul (wandering in ancient times, haunted by memories, and loves and lives lost ) as it finds itself in an expanded state of awareness (new ground, chance to know who I am, begin again). This bowl-neck lute played with a bow is is an old Turkic stringed instrument and called Kobys, Qobyz or Kylkobyz in Kazakhstan. The Kyrgyz variant, for example, is called the kyl-kyyak.
The Kobys is the oldest string instrument in the world and, according to a German scientist, it spread beyond the borders of the nomadic area of Central Asia and became the mother (prototype) of all European string instruments.

The pianist is Igor Krutoy who composed this piece. If you see Igor at the piano you can be sure that he composed the song for Dimash. Dimash has been training/performing/singing every single day for his entire life! He sings constantly. He has said that if you cut open his head you would find music and if you cut open his heart you will find music. He does 3 hrs of training every day. Swims etc. and that is why his breath control is so incredible.
You can see his hard work is paying off in major ways! 💚

One of the amazing numbers to come out of the collaboration between Dimash and composer Igor Krutoy (the pianist here). You might also remember Igor leading the standing ovation in the audience after Sinful Passion. After Sinful Passion maestro Krutoy came out of retirement to work with Dimash and as you continue exploring the world of Dimash you’ll see more songs he wrote specifically for Dimash’s unique abilities and range.

His family is in the US now. Krutoy came out of retirement to write songs for Dimash. The maestro and Dimash have been working together from time to time since 2018. They are friends and have a father-son relationship.
Dimash said also in an interview about the collaboration with Igor Krutoy that it is important to him that the songs are written in such a way that there is room for variations ... so every performance of a song is a surprise and every Dear can choose his favorite presentation... I can not decide.
The lyrics were written by Mary Sharon Vaughn (*1947, American musician, songwriter and producer. She writes hits for famous singers around the world, including Lara Fabian)
