Basically its not modern street food in Indonesia. All u eat are traditional javanese dessert. They called it "jajanan pasar" or a traditional market snacks
Haha serabi notosuman 😋👍🏻 Hunkwee is a type of flour that is made from mungbean. The onde2's filling is also made of bean paste, just different type of bean (usually mungbean). And lol, when you drank kunir asem, it's a herb drink, usually women drink it before and during period. Anyway, great video! Glad you both enjoy the traditional snacks!
onde onde fillings from mung bean and hungkwe is from mungbean scratch ; arem2 from rice with fillibg tofu or chicken or tempeh and lapis is from sticky rice flour and when you said bolu we called it putu ayu my favorites one from many enjoy...
Yummy!! I ended up here after watching "The Hungry Syrian Wanderer" eating Indonesian food! He's Syrian based in Manila vlogging Filipino food as well. Nice content btw
kunir asem is made of tamarind and turmeric as the main ingredients. I like to drink this when I have painful period cramp. Inside the onde2 is mungbean mixed with coconut milk. Serabi Solo is my fav too.
7:58 is healthy drink. it has many benefit for body, prevent smelly bodies, destroying bad fat in body, heal/strong heart/liver, etc. and it's usually for women whom wanna diet healty and healing hurt from menstruation.
nice review, guys. may i add some? the bolum is actually "bolu" which literally means sponge cake. the sponge cake that you held was not baked btw, but steamed. they may use coconut as the substitution of butter/margarine. arem-arem is wrapped rice with coconut milk, filled with chicken and sometimes veggies. the kunir asem drink is turmeric (kunyit) and tamarind (asam/asem) combined with palm sugar. it has many healthy benefit: to avoid menstrual cramps, helps body odor problems, etc as turmeric itself contains antioxidant. you will get more fresh if you drink it everyday. inside the onde-onde, it is also bean paste from mung bean paste. its just that the green skin of the bean is peeled so you only see that it looks yellow can't wait to see your next reviews!
Thank you very much for explaining everything for us. We sure had a nice week in Central Java and we plan to come back to Indonesia next year to make many more videos.
kunir asam is a herbal drink we call 'jamu' made from kunir (root), sugar and tamarind. it is good if u feel sick when menstruation. and kunir is known for antibiotics dan for ulcer
Thank you very much! We sure had a great time and we plan to return to Indonesia again next year. For the time being we have a couple more videos coming out soon.
The Onde-onde that you tried it is siomilar to the dimsum in HK.. In Indonesia the filling usually is mung bean (we call it "kacang hijau"). The Arem2 that you tries it is rice cake filled with chicken and spicy veggies, but in some area the filling can be meat or just veggies. Indonesia traditional dessert mostly is made with coconut (milk or meat).. When you see it white, most of the time it won't be vanilla. I beleive vanilla was imported from abroad though.. and the serabi Notosuman place is one of (if not) the best serabi I've ever tried.. So good job on picking the place... :D
most of the snack that you eat are made from rice flour. Inside the onde onde is actually a sweet green bean paste, which is the same filling that we use for 'bakpia' (if you have ever eat it). and the last one that you drink is one of many kind of "jamu", an Indonesian traditional herbal drink. That is the one with the turmeric (kunir) and tamarind (asem) as the main ingredients :) thank you for visiting Indonesia and reviewing our beloved street food :)
That arem-arem makes me drool. Solo's arem-arem is the best it has smooth great flavour than one from other regions. You can say it's kind of get a go fulfilling snack like onigiri. So yum.
love serabi notosuman. onde-onde are usually stuffed with mashed mung bean (kacang ijo) in indonesia lapis is made of rice flour and sago flour mixture with coconut milk and chocolate flvour the green one is Bolu or actually people call it putu ayu and wow, you tried kunir asem? it's curcuma (or someting) juice with some other herbs. it's good for women when they have PMS pain but the taste is "unique" most of indonesian don't like it, but i do
Samuel and Audrey serabi notosuman is just 400metres from my home...you must try tengkleng solo in klewer traditional market.....welcome in solo..the spirit of java
I miss my country after I saw your video. Lapis cake that you ate is made from rice flour and food coloring and they steam it, they steam it layer by layer and quite takes time to make it. Lapis it means Layer. you should try other snack from other island as every island have own snack and dish.
Thank you for the replay. I like Padang food (nasi padang, sate padang), Palembang (pempek) Makassar (Es Pisang ijo , Es Palu Butung, coto makasar), Bogor (Toge Goreng, Laksa Bogor), Jogja (Tongseng, sate kambing), Papua (Papeda). There's only few food that I like most, there are so many food and snack in Indonesia. Hope you will have time to try it, also I hope I can go back to Indonesia soon to eat that food again. :)
Haha, just found out your channel. All that food is everyday meal to me, because my sister, she has a little store sell those food in front of our house every morning. By the way, I'm from Surabaya, come visit here someday. I would love to show you guys some culinary here. Nice to know you guys !
Hey! Thanks for checking out our channel Ryan :) That is so cool to hear! We're hopefully coming back to Indonesia again next year and we'd love to visit there.
AWESOME! Pls come to the Philippines next! But the street food culture is not as well developed here as maybe Indonesia or Thailand but there's lots of interesting food to be discovered in the proper local restaurants here!!!😉
Samuel & Audrey I tried out a new restaurant in the Asian area where I'm from and they had them. Then I started going to the Asian market to get them 😛
Hi Sam and Audrey, I envy you both having great snacks in Solo. anyway, those arem-arem, people usually bring it when they're travelling. It's simple to pack yet really good to make the tummy full. Haha... You know, Indonesian will never say they've had lunch before they get some rice. So arem-arem is just perfect dish: you get carbo and protein (from the chicken inside, sometimes chicken's liver or tofu with potato stew, and the egg to wrap the rice,), and fiber from the banana leaf if you do not hesitate to eat (just kidding..do not do that). Ahhh..your video makes me hungry right now....good video!!
Indonesian traditional snack often use coconut milk instead of milk. That's why it has some coconut taste. Inside that onde is green bean paste *sorry for my bad grammar*
Karlstendahlberg ah yes it's mung bean, thank you for the correction. I said it green bean because i didn't know that kacang(bean) hijau(green) called mung bean in english :v
We have an Asian grocery store here that sells these fresh made sesame balls. It's just a ball made from coconut flakes inside. Quite good if it's still warm, but heavy in your stomach due to all the fat.
Hi, guys i enjoyed your video and i started to be your subscriber. I'm from Indonesia live in Bandung, West Java. You guys need to come over here and try "sundanese foods". Btw, r u staying in Indonesia or just come for vacation? Good to know you both!
Thank you very much! We really appreciate that. We're hoping to visit Indonesia again next year. Thanks for the suggestion of Bandung. I hope we can make it there.
the orange bottle for "Kunir Asem" drink is made from tumeric and tamarind juice....guys.... its healthy beverage for women while in period or menstruation. good job... lovely content Video !!! thumbs up!!!
woa Putu Ayu and Lapis are my favorite, and yes, on top of putu ayu is coconut. Inside of Onde onde that you eat shall be mung bean, it can be varied actually. are you in Indonesia atm? hope you enjoy it guys :D
Oh, that is really cool to hear! Thank you. Ah, mung bean! Not at the moment but we still have some more videos coming out from Indonesia and we plan to revisit again next year :)
the last one is actually a turmeric mixed with tamarind drink and the reason why it tasted like herbal because it is a traditional herbal drink/jamu haha
That Lapis looks fascinating. Remind me when I was a child, I eat that layer by layer. Usually I called that "kue pepe" and it has other tasted in "pandan" that has green colour. From what I know, Lapis made of rice flour so it has chewy texture. And the Kunir Asem/ Kunyit Asem is a kind of "Jamu" and usually drink as healthy drink consist of curcuma and it kinda have healing effect for menstrual cramps. That arem-arem is made of rice and some meat or vegetables. It also called "Lontong isi" and other varian of it called "Lemper". Hope you'll enjoy your visit in Indonesia :D
Thank you very much for explaining these for us! Indeed, the kunir-asem really tasted healthy ;) Maybe if we tried it a few more times we'd enjoy it more but aside from that we loved all of the tasty snacks we got to try. We're really excited because we plan to return to Indonesia again next year with a plan to eat a lot more street food :)
You're welcome :D. Try to come to other island, like in sumantra, bali, lombok, borneo, celebes, etc or other province. Usually each island/province have their own food varieties. Eventhough I'm Indonesian, I havent tried all the food here. hehe.
See the way you guys eating, make me want to go back to solo again.. that serabi is really tasty. Nice choice 😅😅 You should try Bakso Remaja at Veteran Street. Its really good too. 😊
kunir asem is jamu, kind of herbal drink, it's taste even better when served cold. But mostly i hate those kind of "branded" jamu (the kind you drink, with plastic bottle). Most of them are too sweet and you can taste the preservative quite strong. So the best way to get it is to buy it from traditional market vendor, they usually sold it in big glass bottle alongwith another kind of jamu concoction. kunir asem and/or kunyit asem is great for everyone but specifically female will benefited most from it. It's kinda great for female reproductive organ. It eased period pain, and believed to be able to "clean" the uterus.
Thank you for such a detailed explanation! Yes, it most certainly does taste healthy ;) We hope to return to Indonesia again soon to eat more street food.
the inside is mung/mong bean hahaha you have to try the drinks as well like "susu kacang hijau". but maybe I can give you an idea for the drinks hahaha Try: es doger, es teler, es campur, susu kacang hijau, es cendol, es cincau. Those are super easy to be found. My super favourite drink is es cincau. You can google how it looks like hahahha The texture is like a jelly but actually it made from a leaf (which I forgot the name) hahaha
Now that's traditional snacks... You did it right what other youtubers doing it wrong.... What they did is go to the minimarket, buy snacks that aren't traditionally come from there and called it indonesian snacks...that just so wrong...
Looks like banana leaves. I've found that sweets in countries other than the US and Canada aren't quite as sweet. Was it true of those sweets in Indonesia? I rather prefer the less sweet desserts.
That is a really good point Bill. Yeah, these desserts are more naturally sweetened as opposed to having a bunch of sugar added. I agree with you on that totally.
I cringed when you ate the kuah lapis from the side... It's the equivalent of eating Kitkat by biting it directly as opposed to breaking it off one by one... I mean... there's nothing wrong with it, I'm just used to eating it by peeling it one by one... Btw, fyi, The hunkue and kueh lapis were made by coconut milk and rice flour. And the "mystery ingredient" inside the onde-onde is mung bean paste :)
Basically its not modern street food in Indonesia. All u eat are traditional javanese dessert. They called it "jajanan pasar" or a traditional market snacks
Oh, thanks for letting us know about that. We'll have to try more street food when we come back to Indonesia again next year.

i hope you happy
Thanks for coming to Indonesia ,

God Bless you all
when I was a kid, I always eat the lapis by peeling each layer and eating them one by one.
Oh wow! That takes a lot of patience :)
wkwk sama 😂
Geofanny Yohanes i still do that now haha. to think of it i dont think i ever eat it with big bite. i always peel lol

that kunir asam was made from turmeric, tamarind and boiled with brown/white sugar. so, the weird after taste maybe come from the turmeric :)
Oh, thanks for explaining that. We enjoyed those snacks :)
Most of indonesian pastries are coconut and rice flour based with pandan leaf, from which that somewhat artificial-looking green color comes from.
Thanks for letting us know! We love almost anything with coconut :)

Thank you! They are the perfect snack to bring on a trip! I would have never thought of that until you mentioned it :)

Onde onde are small green balls coated in coconut.
The lapis literally means layer, u can pull each layer apart to eat, looking forward for you Malaysian travel!!

dFruitzig a oh, thanks for info.
Thanks for letting us know!
We'll be back in KL really soon! So excited :)
Thanks for letting us know. Makes more sense to peel it as you suggest.
nice video
Thank you very much!
