    First-- Heather, thank you for your terrific, informative and insightful videos. You've become not just my favorite source for general info, but my last stop barometer before making photography decisions. I'm a beginning vlogger, and I've made 3 big decisions. I'm hoping you, or other people here, will be generous in giving me a "Yay" or a "Nay" on them. I'm currently using 2 Neewer 660 bicolors for key and fill, and an assortment of Ivisii G2s, a cheap ring light and a Viltrox L116T for background, eyes and hair:
    1) I want to get a Godox ML60bi with a 90 cm soft box. The main reason is that the ML60bi, especially with the big soft box, seems dummy-proof. I'm 62 years old. Bad lights can be unbelievably unflattering, and at my skill level I can definitely screw up the lights. It seems relatively easy to make your subject (me) look good with the ML60bi-- I'll continue to use one of the 660s, or an Ivisii G2 for a fill light (if I need a fill light at all). And I'll chuck the cheap ring light, as I understand the ML60bi will give me an eye catchlight.
    2) I'm going to re-configure my studio. I'm in a small 15' x 6' ft room that opens up into a T at one end that's 10 feet wide and 6 feet deep. The subject (me) is currently sitting in the wider T-section of the room, with the key and fill lights 3 feet from me in the narrow portion of the room. This allows for the key light to be at a 45 degree angle, about 3 feet from the subject.
    I'm going to switch that, and put the ML60bi with the 90 cm soft box in the room's wide base (the soft box wouldn't have fit in the narrow section of the room)-- Now the subject will sit in the narrow portion of the room. I'll use a Neewer 660, or an Ivisii G2, as a fill light, if I need it. .
    3) Currently, I'm sitting directly in front of a window, with the window behind me-- but the window is obscured by my backdrop. By switching position, I'll be facing the window directly, giving me a fair amount of sunlight at a flush angle.
    I know this is a lot. But, without experience or expertise, I'm flying pretty blind here, and it seems to me that this is a huge decision in terms of making my videos watchable. I'd be very, very grateful if you, or other people on the site, would offer your thoughts. It''s time to stop obsessing over lighting and start shooting. Thank you again, Mike

    • @FellowFilmmaker
      @FellowFilmmaker  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey :D Let's see if I can help you out a bit
      1. Yes, the ML60bi would be a great place to start with a good Keylight that lasts you awhile. Keep in mind, you'll need full control of the room for best results. What that means is you don't want to compete with sunlight as this is only a 60w light. It being bi-color also means it can't be as bright as the daylight only ML60. Helpful to know, so just tossing it out there.
      2. Without a visual I'm not sure I have a comment here, as I like see a visible floor plan of sorts to understand things. But in short, if the keylight has a 90cm softbox and is within about 3ft of the subject around a 45 degree angle it should look good :D
      3. Like I mentioned a window is hard to compete with. The color temp is constantly changing throughout the day, the sunlight could pour into the space directly, it could bounce off tress outside and give a green cast that you'll have to compete with. All things to keep in mind. I prefer closing a window if it's not crucial to the scene, especially if it's not visible. If the window is an absolute must, consider using ND gels on it or even thick sheer curtains across it to help control it a bit.
      Hope that helps!

    • @mikeb2644
      @mikeb2644 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FellowFilmmaker Hey Heather. Wow. Thank you for the thoughtful response. Especially thank you for focusing on the sunlight issue. At my skill level, I think this is a ‘six of one, half-dozen of the other’ problem. Absolutely, I’m not capable of eye-balling the sunlight and matching the lights with it. On top of that, I’ve had trouble with the m50’s custom white balance. I plan to put a translucent drape over the window to soften the light, but I don’t know if that’ll help with temperature. On the other hand, right now, I’ve got shadows in my background that I can’t figure out how to get rid of, so even in warm light, my set always looks like nighttime (not the end of the world with what I’m doing, but I’d prefer to have more control).
      I hope you don’t mind if I make a suggestion. Have you ever thought about creating a curriculum on lighting? People could watch a handful short instructional videos, and do some lighting assignments that you commented on. Maybe also have a specific, limited number of their own questions they could ask while they’re taking the course. Just a thought, but it’s something I’d be delighted to pay for, and I imagine I’m not alone.
      Anyway, thank you again for your thoughtful reply. I’ve been watching so many of your videos I’ve become a fan, so getting the first personal reply from you was kind of like getting an autographed photo in the mail, back when kids wrote their favorite baseball players for autographed pictures. (My picture was from a first baseman named Boog Powell. Him and George Bush who sent me an autographed picture in response to, as I remember, my letter suggesting that he resign from office. Weird.)
      Thank you again. You’re very generous. Mike

      I love the ML for sure! It's a great keylight. You will need the adapter if you choose to use it as a Keylight.
      I recommend a quick setup 90cm softbox. You can find what I use and recommend on my kit: kit.co/fellowfilmmaker
      You might consider the Amaran 60d as a keylight, you won't need an adapter and it's great as well. No quiet fans tho.
      I have a comparison of the Godox to Amaran if you check the channel further

    • @JoeMurphysGuitarlessons
      @JoeMurphysGuitarlessons ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FellowFilmmaker Heather, first of all, would like to thank you for your very quick response. I think your videos are really good and to the point and if any of my community are looking for and info on the type of things you cover I will certainly be pointing them to you. Thanks for the links to your set up that was also helpful. I also like the Amaran, my only concern is fan noise, having said that, I'm sure there are many users of similar lights, yet you never hear that fan noise ? Your videos included, why can't I hear the fans ? The other thing I wanted to ask was when a light is "Bi" what exactly is that ? Given that I use my iPhone to shoot my videos, light is something that I may have overlooked, it may help if you have a quick look at my channel, you will see sometimes the lighting is ok, other times not too great, my aim is to make it more consistent and my thinking is that I have at least one decent light it may help me achieve this ? I don't know if you do private consultations, but if you do I would be interested in getting your feedback on how I can improve my YT look, if that makes sense. Anyways, thanks again..

    • @FellowFilmmaker
      @FellowFilmmaker  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Joe :D
      When it comes to fan noise, it really depends on what you're doing with a microphone and how close it is to where your lights are and if you have a good room for acoustics.
      When it comes to your question of what does "bi" mean it's short for bi-color. Which means the light is variable in color temperature. Many lights that have the letter "d" in the name stand for daylight. This means the light will have a set color temperature of around 5600K (K is for Kelvin, the unit of measuring the temperature of light). A bi-color light could do a range of colors from, say, 2700K (that's a very warm color like at sunset) to 7000K (that would be very cool or even blue looking like late at night).
      Hope that helped!
      And I took a quick look at your channel, well done first of all on the size of the channel and many views you get on each video. :)
      I do private consults, yes. I'd be happy to chat more to you about that if you like. You are most welcome to email me, it's in the about section of my channel.

    Hi Heather. Thanks for this helpful overview. I have been shooting videos for my wife’s TH-cam channel, often outside, and need something to fill but from a bit of a distance at times. The Litra Pro I have is useful at close range, but I am wondering if you have covered using this light portably outdoors, and what sort of distance you can use it with?
    Thanks for the great content. As always.

    • @FellowFilmmaker
      @FellowFilmmaker  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've not used it outside much myself, so I can't really say. I know there was a video out there by Brandon Li who showed it being used outdoors a bit, might be helpful.
      I'd say if you are going to use this light any further than 3ft from the subject, you'll need something brighter - especially outdoors.

    Thanks for the video. The light looks good. . i am currently using a couple of budget bi-color led panels with an umbrella for diffusion. The setup does a decent job, Always been curious.... How much would upgrading improve my lighting? Lights or mostly used for lighting myself when on camera. Seems like i would probably get a similar result, but I not really sure. Its tempting to try to upgrade my lighting setup... Just not sure how much benefit i would get.

    • @FellowFilmmaker
      @FellowFilmmaker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Glad you enjoyed the video! It depends on what you feel your needs are, or what you feel is lacking in what you currently have.
      I like the ability to easily shape a light so its one reason I do like a COB light versus a panel light. This little light I believe is most worthwhile if you constantly are on the go, in small spaces, and still want that control over the lighting. It's got good quality. I was more than pleased with it as a key light, rim light, and any other light I used it as. The adapter I feel is a must as it will allow that full control if you want this to do many things (be paired with a snoot, a projection unit, barndoors, etc.). Otherwise, if you have no intention of shaping light, then panels will be fine enough. But I find what makes a youtube set look professional is the ability to have several lights with control so you can contour and shape the lights into interesting patterns, angles, and dimensions.
      In short, I can't tell you what to do or when to upgrade. But if you know what you want and what you don't like about your current setup, then its easier to figure out what fits the needs.

    Hi again! I finally got a ML60 bi light for some corporate interviews I have this week coming up (I already have a couple of Neewer LED panels which have been very useful)- but for the ML60bi I couldn't get a softbox-The AS-S60S seems to be popular for this light and so I need to find a way to improvise a bit and soften this light so that I can use it a keylight but be a nice soft light...I know I need a softbox but since I don't have one, what would you do to soften the light and make it suitable for interviews? Use umbrellas? I could get one but would it mount on the light as is? I don't want to bother with adapters. Or Just use diffusing gels? the paper type? Nothing compares to having a softbox but I need help!! I hope you have some hacks pls! Thanks so much for your awesome videos...PS what other Godox mount softbox would your recommend? The 60S looks very portable

      I've got a video for DIY solution that is really simple to do with a shower curtain. In general you could get the $25 bowens mount adapter for the light and put any softbox you want on it, it's what I do. Hey! Amazing review, thank you very much! very cinematic, love it! ... I've just bought the ML60bi which I think it's amazing for its portability (so small!) and also, instead of buying the 60cm parabolic, I went for the next size which is the 85cm (AD-S85S I think). And, I've got an impression here that made me doubt about the ML. I didn't feel the light bright enough? I was using the grid too which it's kind of perfect for interview situations. Do you think the 85cm parabolic is diffusing the light maybe too much? I've seen you used a 95mm on this video and I wanted to ask you if you've also used the big parabolic with this tiny light as key light for interviews, your youtube videos, etc? ... Thanks in advance for your help, please let me know your thoughts! and keep it up :)

      I've used the ML60 for youtube keylight with a 90cm softbox dome and it's been fine. I only do one layer of diffusion material for my softboxes. So if you're doing two layers, that could be what's happening
