Should've come to see us in person! Our restaurant and bar are open 7 days a week. Thanks for visiting our wonderful airfield and yes we are the largest gliding club in the world with over 700 members and 250 aircraft on site. Come for a flight! There's plenty of nice walks up to Herriard from our front door.
Up until the early seventies the Staravia aircraft scrapyard was across the road from the gliding club, a place of wonder to me as a schoolboy, where military aircraft were broken up. Very nearby, on the Basingstoke to Alton light railway, the late twenties film 'The Wrecker' which contains the most spectacular steam locomotive crash in British film history, was filmed. It was based on a play written by Arnold Ridley 'Godfrey' in Dads Army.
Scrapyards were a mecca for kids but an aviation scrapyard that's top notch 🙂 I've also made a video from Cliddesden where I talk about the Wrecker and also my favourite old film " Oh Mr Porter". Thanks for your great memories.
It’s a shame you didn’t mention Lasham’s association with the Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE), later Aerospace. The airfield was home to many of the RAE’s Space Departments, who’s main work was carried out at the RAE’s main site in Farnborough. As a ground receiving station, Lasham made a considerable contribution to the UK’s space R&D, which in turn massively contributed to the space exploration programmes of our wealthier allies.
Thanks for the extra info I'd mentioned satellite tracking but would love to know more about the RAE work there. Incidentally they have a fabulous little museum right at the end of the runway in Farnborough.

Thanks that sounds like a good idea and I love chatting to experts on my various walks. Anyone I should name drop.
