  • From the ruins of Basing House, we continue to follow the route of this abandoned canal as it leaves the urban area of Basingstoke and enters the Hampshire countryside, which turns up a couple of surprising discoveries.

    Really enjoyed this as live in Basingstoke and mum lives on the canal in brookwood so both loved exploring the tunnel together and the last 5 miles. You have put the missing final pieces together, thank you

    That deep cutting, off Milkingpen Lane, I remember playing there as a kid, with my friends, back in the early 1970s. It was the best place to build forts and play soldiers. Never knew - until I’ve watched this - what it actually was 😂

    Something to note, on the section between Old Basing and Hatch, the canal runs atop the old Roman Road that ran from Chichester to Calleva.

      Hi there. That's an interesting point. If you watch my Calleva Attrebatum vid, part 1 the road to Calleva. My research pointed to the Noviomagus (Chichester) to Calleva road joining Roman road A42, Venta Bulgarum (Winchester to Calleva) at Latchmere Green, slightly south of Calleva. Afraid it doesn't go through Okd Basing or Hatch.

      @@PASTFINDERexploring Hello, thanks for the response.
      You got me thinking I’d gotten my previous comment wrong.
      So I went through my old OS mapping, sheets, 185 and 186, plus my 1945 OS map sheet, No 169, and to doubley check, the OS app.(Great app)
      I do a lot of walking in and around the Meon Valley, through the Froyle’s and upto Odiham. It was walking on the Holybourne down and following it up as far as the two masts that got me onto the Roman Road originally.
      I really liked your series of videos on the Basingstoke to Alton light railway by the way.
      The 1945 map did not show it, so I had a check on the old google to see if the route was legitimate. Turns out the road from Chichester to Silchester wasn’t discovered till 1949 by aerial photography by of all people the OS archeology team.
      Its route does place it running to the east of Basing, either under or very very close to the old canal alignment.
      Please don’t think I’m trying to be in anyway disparaging. I’m actually glad you got me to go back and do a bit of investigating and recheck everything.
      I do appreciate your videos and the effort you put into them. Keep up the good work.

      Hi there, I don't think you are at all disparaging. By questioning things is how we all learn and I encourage active debate.
      I have had a look at the OS maps myself and I have to admit, I didn't realise the Chichester to Silchester road passed that close to Old Basing and through north Basingstoke. So I stand corrected and it's possible that it skirts a small part of the canal as it heads North past Old Basing. I shall certainly be going to have a look to see what's to see. Thank you.

    The pump house is to provide spring water to the swing bridge cottages. This is their only water source and is still in use. One of the owners likes to keep it overgrown.

    Great Video - One aid may be using the LiDAR DTM (50cm-1M) as this removes the trees and shows the ground level. Using this the small section south of the M3 at Hatch is clesrly shown!

    Superb, well presented and very thorough. Very much enjoyed parts 1 and 2. The canal is obviously never going to be reinstated on its original alignment, but it's nice to imagine that one day the tunnel will be reopened to boaters and perhaps bring a terminus basin a bit nearer Basingstoke. Thanks for all
    your efforts and hard work. One of the best disused canal videos I've seen.

    • @PASTFINDERexploring
      @PASTFINDERexploring  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Bobbie. Alas no, it won't. However, I think the fact that it remains only in fragmented and abandoned form makes it that much more intriguing.

    • @davidrobinson4642

      Assuming the 'Bat Problem' could be overcome by a seasonal closure of Greywell Tunnel during the Winter months then I think
      the perfect terminus would be by a marina Nately Scures. This would serve Basingstoke perfectly without being inappropriate to the surrounding area and in keeping with the original canal function. Internally the tunnel is in near perfect condition with a supportive blockage sited approximately 100Metres from the collapsed Western tunnel portal. The canal bed to the west is in very good condition as far as the Brickworks arm and was cleared of scrub during the canal restoration. The tunnel is the primary source of the canal's water supply with a powerful underwater spring located approximately 200 Metes from the Eastern portal on the North wall of the tunnel bore. There are additional springs located in the Eastern tunnel approach cutting so reinstating the tunnel would be beneficial in supplying water to a Marina at Up Natley and the leaky section of the canal has already been disconnected. As Engineer I can see very few problems with this scheme always assuming a compromise can be agreed with the 'Battists' and I believe that a simple closure at the Western portal using doors to turn the tunnel into a 'cave' equivalent for the hibernation period would be worthy of discussion. Just a suggestion but it does require a compromise.
      The engineering is easy and it would properly restore the canals purpose.
      Sorry this is a bit long.

      @anthonymoore6009 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      As David has said from an engineering perspective it's not a difficult job, until I guess the word money rears its ugly head. Bring it on I say.

      @@anthonymoore6009 Problem is The area between Penny bridge and the tunnel is a very successful nature conservancy area. Today more than ever its utterly essential they are protected at all costs. I too would like to see the canal reinstated to some level west of Greywell but not at the expense of disrupting wildlife.

    • @davidrobinson4642
      @davidrobinson4642 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PASTFINDERexploring Without any restoration of the canal there would not be any wildlife to protect because it would have been filled in and built over years ago and it would all now look like the last five miles. I say reinstate the tunnel an make a proper terminus - the wildlife will easily adapt.
